To remove the red number on the iPad Mail icon, turn off Badges for the relevant account: open Settings > Apps > Mail > Notifications > Customize Notifications, select the account, then switch off Badges. This hides the unread-email count without requiring you to turn off other Mail notifications.
Turn off the Mail badge for an account
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Mail.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Customize Notifications.
- Select the email account whose badge you want to hide.
- Turn off Badges.

If the red number is still showing
Mail can have multiple accounts configured. Return to Customize Notifications and check the badge setting for each account; the badge may be associated with another account that still has Badges enabled.

What turning off Badges changes
The badge is the unread-email count shown above the Mail app on the Home Screen. Badges and alerts are separate notification controls, so you can hide the red number while leaving other Mail notification options on.

Why the badge count may not match all unread mail
Mail’s category settings can affect which unread messages a badge counts. Apple describes an iOS 18.2 behavior in which, with categories enabled, the badge may count unread messages in the Primary category; its support article explains how to show all unread messages. That specific category guidance is for iOS and should not be assumed to apply to every iPadOS version: Customise your Mail notifications on your iPhone or iPad.
