How to Remove School Management From a Chromebook

Removing a profile or Powerwashing a Chromebook does not end school management. The organization’s administrator must deprovision the device.

You can’t remove a school administrator’s control from a managed Chromebook yourself. The school or organization must deprovision the device from its Google Admin account. Removing a user profile or performing a Powerwash does not remove the device’s management. If you bought the Chromebook secondhand, ask the seller or original organization to deprovision it.

First, identify what you need to remove

A Chromebook profile, the Google Account used with that profile, and an organization’s control over the device are different things. The right fix depends on which one is causing the problem.

What you see or want to do What resolves it What it does not do
You want to remove a user profile and “Remove this user” is available Remove that profile from the Chromebook It does not delete the Google Account or remove school management. Google’s Chromebook help
You want to erase local files or reset the Chromebook Powerwash, after backing up needed local data It does not remove the organization’s device record or end forced re-enrollment. Google’s Powerwash instructions; Google’s data-erasure guidance
You want to end school or organization management The organization’s administrator must deprovision the Chromebook A user profile removal or Powerwash cannot substitute for deprovisioning. Google’s guidance for previously managed devices

How to remove a Chromebook user profile

If you only want to remove an account profile from the sign-in screen, and the Chromebook permits it, use the profile menu and choose Remove this user. Google describes this as removing the account from that Chromebook, not deleting the Google Account itself. The account and its synced information remain available through Google.

If that option is missing, Google says the Chromebook may be managed by an administrator. Contact the school or organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to change device ownership. Google: Remove an account from a Chromebook

How to remove school management

Ask the school or organization that manages the Chromebook to deprovision it if it is being transferred out of its control. Google states that deprovisioning the device from the organization’s account is the way to completely remove administrative control. The organization’s administrator handles this in Google Admin console; a student, former employee, or new owner cannot perform the organization-side action from the Chromebook.

  1. Contact the school or organization’s IT administrator and provide the Chromebook’s identifying information, such as its serial number, if requested.
  2. Explain that the device is being transferred out of the organization and ask the administrator to deprovision it from the organization’s account.
  3. After the administrator confirms the change, follow any setup instructions they provide. If the device still shows a management or enrollment message, contact the organization again to verify that deprovisioning is complete.

Google’s buying-and-selling guidance explains the deprovisioning requirement: Buying and selling previously managed ChromeOS devices. For organizations managing ChromeOS devices, see Get started with Chrome & ChromeOS device management.

If you bought the Chromebook secondhand

A Chromebook that still says it is managed by another organization remains tied to that organization’s management. Contact the seller and ask them to have the original organization deprovision it. Google says a device still marked as managed by another organization cannot be enrolled by a different organization. If the seller cannot resolve the issue, pursue a return through the sales channel you used.

Do not treat a setup prompt after a reset as proof that the device is ready for personal use. Ask the seller to resolve the enrollment before accepting the device as transferred.

What Powerwash does—and what it does not

Powerwash restores local device data to factory settings and erases local files. Back up anything you need first, including files stored in Downloads that have not been synced elsewhere. Google notes that organizational enrollment information can remain after a wipe, so a managed Chromebook may return to an organization’s enrollment screen during setup.

Use Powerwash only when you have a legitimate reason to erase the Chromebook’s local data—not as a way to remove school control. See Google’s Powerwash instructions and Powerwash and data erasure on Chromebooks.

Why changing the owner account is not the answer

On an unmanaged personal Chromebook, the first Google Account used is usually the owner. On a Chromebook used at work or school, Google identifies the device administrator as the owner. Google says users cannot reset a work or school device or change its owner; they should contact the administrator. Find your Chromebook’s owner account

Chromebook management is not Chrome browser management

Google’s instructions for stopping management of Chrome browsers or browser profiles on other operating systems cover a different situation. They do not remove organization management from a ChromeOS Chromebook. For a school-managed Chromebook, the organization’s administrator must address the device enrollment. Google: Stop managing or delete Chrome browsers and profiles
