1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo remove light rust from pliers, start with gentle, localized brushing and use a rust treatment suited to the tool’s surface. To loosen a stiff pivot, apply a small amount of penetrant at the joint and work it gently. These are separate jobs: rust remover treats accessible rust, while penetrant is intended to free stuck parts. No method here guarantees that every finish or construction will be unharmed, so check coatings first and avoid aggressive scraping.
Inspect the rust and find what is sticking
Before cleaning, check the jaws, cutting edges, pivot, and handles. Note whether the tool has plating, paint, bluing, browning, or another intentional finish. Rust on an exposed jaw needs a different treatment from a pivot that simply will not move freely.

If the tool is valuable, its finish is unknown, or rust has deeply pitted a jaw or cutting edge, stop rather than risk further damage. The cited guides do not establish a repair threshold or test every method on every alloy, coating, or handle material.
Remove light rust with gentle, controlled cleaning
Use a toothbrush or similarly small brush to work on the rusty area. This helps limit contact with unaffected surfaces. An iFixit guide for the Nipper D-108 describes mixing about 3–4 tablespoons of baking soda with enough white vinegar to cover the nipper, soaking it for about an hour, scrubbing with a toothbrush, rinsing with water, and drying with a towel. This is one guide’s method for a small nipper, not a universal guarantee of finish safety: iFixit’s Nipper D-108 rust-removal guide.
#1 Best Overall
- TOUGHER THAN THE TOUGHEST RUST: Easy to use spray gel that clings to iron, steel and other metals to remove rust fast
- DISSOLVES RUST IN MINUTES: Powerful formula dissolves medium to light rust in 10 to 30 minutes or less; heavier rust may need an additional application
- NO SCRUBBING NEEDED: Just rinse & wipe to create an ideal surface for painting
- EXCELLENT CLING: Thick gel enables formula to stay active on metal longer
- TRANSFORMS SURFACES: To like-new condition
Another iFixit guide describes using WD-40 and a scouring pad on old tools, while cautioning that the tool may not look new afterward. Abrasive pads can affect finishes, so do not use one if preserving the surface matters: iFixit’s guide to removing rust from old tools.
Choose a soak only if it suits the finish
Household vinegar-and-baking-soda method
The Nipper D-108 guide’s household method involves immersing the nipper, then scrubbing, rinsing, and towel-drying it. Because immersion exposes more of the tool to the solution, use it only if you are comfortable treating the whole immersed area and can dry it thoroughly afterward.

Commercial rust-remover soak
For WD-40 Specialist Rust Remover Soak, the manufacturer’s current product guidance says the product is ready to use, with at least 30 minutes for light rust, overnight (8 hours) for medium rust, and up to 24 hours for heavy rust. These timings apply to that product; follow its current label for use and cleanup. WD-40 warns not to use it on metals with bluing, browning, or paint because it removes those coatings. Its product page also says performance drops significantly below 60°F, a product-specific temperature note rather than a rule for all rust removers: WD-40 Specialist Rust Remover Soak.

WD-40 describes the soak as removing rust without acids or caustic chemicals. That is the manufacturer’s product statement, not independent evidence that it is safe for every plier material or finish.

Loosen a stiff pivot separately
If the joint remains stiff after surface rust is addressed, apply a small amount of penetrating oil at the pivot and gently open and close the pliers. WD-40 says its Specialist Penetrant reaches tight crevices, threads, and seams to free stuck parts and leaves a lubricating layer. Applying that general stuck-part guidance to a plier pivot is a practical use, not a manufacturer-reported pliers test: WD-40 Specialist Penetrant.
Do not force a damaged or badly corroded joint. Penetrant may help free a stuck pivot, but it does not remove rust from other accessible surfaces.

Rinse, dry, and protect the metal
After a water-based method or a product that calls for rinsing, remove residue as directed. Dry the pliers completely, including around the pivot, then protect exposed metal with a light coating. iFixit’s tool-care guidance lists silicone spray, WD-40, and spray wax as examples of protective coatings after de-rusting: iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit care and use.

| Problem | Approach | Key caution |
|---|---|---|
| Light rust in a limited area | Brush gently with a small brush; consider the Nipper D-108 guide’s vinegar-and-baking-soda soak if the tool’s materials and finish are suitable. | The guide does not establish safety for every finish or construction. |
| Widespread rust on compatible bare metal | Consider a commercial rust-remover soak and follow its current label for timing and cleanup. | WD-40’s soak removes bluing, browning, and paint. |
| Pivot is stiff | Apply penetrant at the joint and work the pliers gently. | This addresses a stuck joint, not rust across the tool. |
The cited sources do not establish a controlled winner for speed, safety, or finish preservation across all pliers. Choose based on the tool’s finish, how much of it would be immersed, and the kind of problem you are treating.
