Choose the right removal option

How to unsend a message in Messenger
- Open the conversation containing the message you sent.
- Select the message or press and hold it, depending on your device and interface.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Unsend or Remove for everyone, if that choice appears, and confirm when prompted.
If the all-participant option is not offered, do not assume that Remove for you will remove the recipient’s copy. The exact confirmation wording and current control locations for each platform are not established by the sources cited here.
What unsending can—and cannot—do
Unsend is intended to remove the message from the conversation for all participants. It cannot ensure the recipient did not see it before removal, take a screenshot, copy its contents, or otherwise retain it. Treat unsending as a way to remove a message from the chat interface, not a guarantee that it was never seen or saved.

Is there a time limit for unsending?
An older Internet Matters PDF guide reports a 10-minute period for removing a message for everyone: Facebook Messenger privacy and security guide. That figure is not independently confirmed here as current Meta policy. Check the selected message’s menu for Unsend or Remove for everyone rather than relying on a specific time limit.
Removing a message is not deleting a conversation or account
Removing one message is different from clearing a conversation from an inbox or deleting a Facebook account. Meta says that after account deletion, messages sent to friends may remain visible because copies are stored in their inboxes. See Meta’s account deletion help page. Deleting your account therefore does not guarantee that sent messages disappear from recipients’ copies.
