To remove ordinary metadata from a video file before looping it on YouTube Live, use FFmpeg to create a new copy with metadata mapping disabled, then inspect that output with ffprobe and play it before using it. The command -map_metadata -1 is a useful starting point—not a guarantee that every tag, chapter, codec-level field, or timestamp has been erased.
What this cleanup changes—and what it does not
Video metadata is not a single layer. A file can contain container-level (global) tags, tags attached to individual streams, chapter information, and format- or codec-specific data. Filesystem timestamps are separate from tags inside the media file. FFmpeg’s metadata-mapping controls address metadata in contexts it supports; they are not a universal eraser for every kind of embedded or external information.

Cleaning the source file also does not set the title, description, privacy, or other public details of a YouTube Live stream. Those are configured separately in YouTube Live Control Room and in the encoder workflow. The available YouTube documentation does not establish that cleaning a local file guarantees how every encoder transmits metadata or how YouTube handles every field in a live feed or archive.

Inspect the original file first
Install FFmpeg, which includes ffmpeg and ffprobe, and open a terminal or command prompt in the directory containing the video. Replace input.mp4 in the examples with your actual filename.

Run
ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.mp4. -
Review the reported format and streams, including the audio, subtitle, data, or attachment tracks present. Note any tags you want to remove and any tracks you need to retain.

If you need a more structured report, use ffprobe’s output options and stream-type specifiers as described in the ffprobe documentation.
Do not overwrite the original. Keeping it gives you a clean fallback if the remuxed copy loses a track or plays differently.
Strip ordinary metadata by remuxing with FFmpeg
For a typical MP4, create a separate output with:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map_metadata -1 -c copy output.mp4
This tells FFmpeg not to automatically copy global metadata and to copy the selected streams without re-encoding them. The video and audio are not recompressed by this command. FFmpeg documents metadata mapping and distinguishes format-level and stream-level metadata; the exact result can depend on the input format and metadata location. Treat this as a starting point and verify the output rather than assuming all tags are gone. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Choose tracks intentionally
The command above does not mean “remove unwanted streams.” If the input contains multiple audio tracks, subtitles, data streams, or attachments, inspect them and decide which should remain. FFmpeg supports optional and negative stream mapping; use those controls only when you deliberately want to include or exclude particular streams. Removing metadata should not accidentally remove a useful audio or subtitle track.

Chapters and other embedded data
Chapter mapping is controlled separately from ordinary metadata mapping. If chapters are also unwanted, consult FFmpeg’s mapping documentation for its chapter-mapping control and apply it deliberately. Do not assume that -map_metadata -1 also removes chapters, attachments, subtitles, timecodes, codec-level user data, or filesystem timestamps; these are distinct targets, and removal details vary by format.

Remuxing with stream copy is the sensible first attempt when you want to avoid a new lossy video encode. Re-encoding is more computationally expensive and can change quality. FFmpeg also documents that some re-encoding-only metadata keys are removed only when the relevant stream—or a stream in the format—is re-encoded. That does not make re-encoding a universal metadata eraser.

FFmpeg can also write metadata while muxing, so the output needs inspection even when you used a negative metadata-mapping instruction. The FFmpeg documentation describes these controls and their context-dependent behavior.
Verify the output before using it

Inspect the new file:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i output.mp4. -
Check both format-level and per-stream tags, and compare them with the original. Confirm that the streams you intended to retain are present.

Play the output. Check video, audio, orientation, timing, and any tracks important to your loop.

If a tag remains, identify whether it is a format tag, stream tag, chapter, or another kind of data before changing the command. The generic metadata-mapping command does not cover every category.

These steps follow FFmpeg’s documentation; results can vary with the file and format. Test a copy using your own media and encoder before relying on it for a live stream.

After checking the file, set the stream’s title, description, privacy, and other stream details in YouTube Live Control Room. Configure the encoder for the applicable YouTube ingest protocol and settings; YouTube’s current guidance describes RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, supported codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency with a four-second maximum. These are ingest recommendations, not metadata-removal settings. Check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for current requirements and test the stream before going live.

Use Live Control Room to manage stream settings and stream keys. A stream key is a credential for the encoder connection, so keep it private. Check the preview and monitor audio and video quality as YouTube recommends in its live-streaming tips and live stream settings guidance. Cleaning a source file does not replace these checks.
