For a quick first pass, use File Explorer’s Properties > Details > Remove Properties and Personal Information option. Choose a cleaned copy if you want to keep the original, then inspect the copy before sharing. This removes properties available to that Windows operation; it does not guarantee that every metadata block or hidden item has been stripped. Office documents need a separate check with Document Inspector.
Remove properties from a file with File Explorer
On supported files, Windows offers a built-in way to remove selected properties or create a copy with properties removed. The wording and available choices can vary by Windows build and file type; the flow is described in Microsoft community guidance and a Windows 11 guide, rather than a current Microsoft consumer support article documenting every dialog.

- In File Explorer, right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and select Remove Properties and Personal Information.
- Choose the option to create a copy with the properties the operation can remove, or select specific properties to remove from the original if that option is available.
- Open the resulting file’s Properties > Details and review the fields before sharing it.
The cleaned-copy option is preferable when you need to preserve the source. A field shown in Properties is not necessarily embedded in the file: for example, owner, computer, or path information may describe local file-system context. A Microsoft Q&A discussion illustrates that distinction, but it does not establish a universal rule for every field or file type.

What EXIF removal does—and does not—mean
EXIF is one family of image metadata. It can record details about a camera or other device and photographic attributes used to create an image. Windows describes EXIF as based on TIFF’s IFD structure; image formats may use different metadata structures, and support for individual properties depends on the format and codec. Microsoft’s imaging documentation covers metadata queries for JPEG, PNG, GIF, and TIFF, but that does not mean every property is available in every format. Some camera RAW formats can also contain EXIF.

That is why an empty or reduced Details list is not proof that every embedded metadata item has been removed. Windows APIs can read and write selected image properties, but unsupported properties or formats can produce errors. The lower-level Windows Imaging Component API can remove a named metadata item through a query expression; it is a developer interface, not a general consumer recipe. See Microsoft’s documentation on image metadata and metadata query expressions.
Remove personal information from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files
File Explorer’s Details cleanup is not a substitute for reviewing an Office document’s contents. Office files may include author and editor names, title, subject, comments, revision marks, routing information, email headers, file paths, or server details. Hidden content can also include annotations, hidden text, off-slide objects, and custom XML.
- Save a copy of the document and open that copy in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Go to File > Info > Check for Issues > Inspect Document.
- Select the categories you want to inspect, then run the inspection.
- Review the results and select Remove All only for categories whose content you intend to clear.
- Save the copy and reopen or inspect it to check the result.
Microsoft recommends working on a copy because removed information may not be recoverable with Undo. The inspector cannot remove every kind of information, and restrictions on a shared workbook can prevent removal of some data. Consult Microsoft’s Document Inspector guidance for the supported categories and limitations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to use a dedicated metadata tool
If you need tag-level control or want to inspect metadata beyond the properties File Explorer exposes, ExifTool is a specialist option with Windows installation instructions and metadata-removal guidance. It is not a universal one-command fix: what is safe to remove depends on the file format, and stripping metadata from some types, including certain RAW images, can affect display. Work on a copy, make changes to a small sample first, and inspect the output before applying a process to a batch.
Quick Recap
Choose a method based on the file and the goal
| Method | Best suited to | Control and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| File Explorer Properties | A simple first pass on supported file properties | Easy to use; available properties and removal options vary, and it does not establish that all metadata is gone. |
| Office Document Inspector | Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents with personal or hidden content | Inspects Office-specific categories; use a copy because removal may not be undoable, and some information cannot be removed. |
| ExifTool | Users who need more detailed, tag-level metadata control | More control, but format-specific knowledge and careful testing are important; stripping can affect some files. |
Check the file before sending it
- Work on a copy when retaining the original matters or when using a tool that can remove content.
- Review the resulting file in the relevant application and check its Properties or metadata view again.
- For Office files, inspect document content as well as ordinary properties; comments, revisions, or hidden objects are not simply EXIF fields.
- Do not treat a blank Details list as a guarantee that no metadata or identifying information remains.
