If you visited a fake ChatGPT site, that alone does not prove malware was installed. First check whether you downloaded or opened a file, installed an app or extension, or entered account or payment details. If you may have run something, stop signing in on that device, then update its security software and scan it. The right cleanup steps depend on your device and operating system; the deeper recovery steps below apply specifically to Windows.
What to do first after visiting a fake ChatGPT site
- Stop using the suspect device for sensitive logins. Do not enter passwords or payment details on it while you assess the risk. The FTC advises stopping online account logins after clicking a link or opening an attachment that may have downloaded malware. A visit by itself does not establish that malware or data theft occurred. FTC malware guidance
- Work out what happened. Note the device and operating system, whether you downloaded or ran a file, installed an app or browser extension, and whether you entered any credentials or payment information. Do not open a suspicious download again to identify it.
- If you entered a password, secure the account from a device you believe is clean. Change that password and any reused passwords, then turn on two-factor authentication where available. This is a precaution; it does not mean the fake site necessarily captured your credentials. The FTC recommends changing passwords and enabling two-factor authentication when accounts may be affected. - If you supplied card or bank details, contact the bank or card issuer. Use the number printed on your card or an official website you reach independently—not contact details supplied by the suspicious site.
How to scan the device for malware
Update the security software on the device and run a scan. Microsoft’s scan instructions cover different procedures for Windows, Mac, and Android; the available controls depend on the platform. Microsoft Defender scan instructions

On Windows, use Windows Security to start a scan and choose a deeper scan if the concern warrants it. Microsoft identifies Defender Offline as its most complete scan option. It restarts the PC and checks it outside the normal Windows environment, which can make persistent malware harder to hide. Save open work before starting it. When to use Windows Defender Offline
Use an offline scan if Windows malware keeps returning, appears difficult to remove, or a regular scan does not resolve the issue. Because the scan runs after a restart and outside Windows, it can help detect threats that may be harder to find while the operating system is running. Follow Microsoft’s current Windows Security instructions for your version of Windows; the menus are not universal to other devices.

If a detection reappears after restarting, Microsoft says a hidden component may be reinstalling it. Follow its recurring-malware troubleshooting guidance rather than trying to edit system files by hand. Microsoft troubleshooting for recurring malware
When a Windows reinstall may be necessary
If malware persists after trying Windows Security scans, Microsoft lists a clean reinstall from installation media as a recovery option. This is an escalation, not a first step for someone who merely visited a site or downloaded a file without running it. A clean reinstall removes Windows, personal files, apps, and settings from the selected drive. Before proceeding, make sure important files can be restored from a backup made before the suspected infection; files copied after infection may also be unsafe to restore.
