The steps below show how to inspect a string and selectively clean it without assuming ChatGPT inserted the character.
Why copied text can contain characters you cannot see
“Invisible character” describes a range of different Unicode characters, not one specific problem. A character may have no visible glyph yet still influence where text wraps, how letters or emoji combine, or how text appears on screen. These characters are not unique to ChatGPT, and their presence does not establish that text was generated by AI.

Unicode describes U+200B ZERO WIDTH SPACE as marking a word-break or line-break opportunity despite having no intrinsic width. That can be useful in languages and contexts where ordinary visible spaces do not handle line breaks as needed. U+200C ZERO WIDTH NON-JOINER and U+200D ZERO WIDTH JOINER are different controls that can affect how text is shaped. See the Unicode Standard, Chapter 23.

Identify the character before cleaning it
Common characters that can look blank or be mistaken for ordinary spacing include:

- U+200B ZERO WIDTH SPACE: creates a break opportunity without a visible space.
- U+2060 WORD JOINER: affects word joining and should not be treated as interchangeable with U+200B.
- U+FEFF ZERO WIDTH NO-BREAK SPACE / BOM: can be an encoding signature at the start of byte data or a character in an already-decoded string.
- U+00A0 NO-BREAK SPACE: resembles a regular space but normally prevents a line break at that position.
- U+200C ZERO WIDTH NON-JOINER and U+200D ZERO WIDTH JOINER: controls that may be meaningful in writing systems and emoji sequences.
- U+00AD SOFT HYPHEN: a discretionary hyphen that may affect line wrapping.
Use an editor or development tool that can reveal Unicode code points or character names. A local script is another option. Avoid pasting private or sensitive text into an unfamiliar online checker: that sends the text to a third party. For code, identifiers, or security-sensitive content, inspect directional formatting controls rather than deleting them automatically; such controls can affect displayed text order. Python’s PEP 672 discusses Unicode security considerations.
Remove only the character you have decided is unwanted
For ordinary English text
If inspection confirms U+00A0 is causing unwanted spacing or wrapping, replace it with an ordinary space when normal line wrapping is desired. If U+200B is unwanted in a particular plain-text string and its break opportunity is not needed, remove that specific character. Keep the original text so you can restore it if the result changes meaning or layout.

For multilingual text, emoji, or uncertain content
Preserve U+200C and U+200D unless you know they are extraneous in the text’s intended language or content. Removing them can change text shaping or break an emoji sequence. Likewise, do not remove every format character or every character that appears blank as a shortcut: broad cleanup can erase meaningful controls.
For U+FEFF and files with a byte-order mark
Distinguish a byte-order mark in encoded data from U+FEFF in a decoded string. Python’s documentation explains that UTF-8 does not require a BOM, and that the utf-8-sig codec skips the three UTF-8 BOM bytes at the beginning when decoding. If U+FEFF is already present in a decoded string, decide whether it is unwanted in that location; do not remove every occurrence indiscriminately. See Python’s UTF-8 codecs documentation.

Inspect and clean text with Python
Python can show the code point and Unicode name for every character, including characters that render blank. This local example prints a visible representation alongside each code point:

cleaned = text.replace("u00a0", " ")Python’s ordinary str.strip() does not remove U+200B because it is not treated as whitespace by the predicate used by that method. A targeted replacement is more precise. See the Python documentation for str.strip() and the Python issue discussion of U+200B.

Verify the cleaned text
- Keep a copy of the original. Cleanup may change wrapping, shaping, or presentation.
- Review the result. Check spaces, punctuation, emoji, and any non-Latin text around each changed character.
- Test it where it caused trouble. Paste the cleaned text into the search box, form, code editor, or document where you noticed the issue.
- Choose tools with privacy in mind. If you use a cleanup utility, check how it processes text and what its privacy practices are before submitting anything sensitive.
