For a normal material or color change, run your printer’s Unload Filament or filament-change command and follow its prompts. The printer’s own manual is the authority for the correct temperature and controls. If filament resists, stop rather than pulling harder: a jam or broken strand needs troubleshooting specific to the printer and where the filament is stuck.
Remove filament during a normal material change
- Start the printer’s unload or filament-change function. Use the control in the printer’s menu or its companion software, if provided, and follow any on-screen prompts. This workflow may heat the hotend and retract the filament for you.
- Let the hotend reach the specified temperature. Follow the printer and filament maker’s instructions for the material currently loaded. Do not assume one temperature suits every filament or printer.
- Let the printer retract the filament, if its workflow does so. On the direct-drive toolhead covered by the My Machines loading and unloading guide, the procedure is to retract a few millimeters, press the tensioner arm, and gently pull the filament straight back through the guide tube. This is an example for that toolhead, not a universal sequence.
- Stop if the filament does not move easily. Resistance, extruder grinding, or a snapped strand is a reason to stop the routine unload and identify the jam before attempting manual removal.
If filament is stuck or broken
First check the printer’s instructions and work out whether the filament is caught in the print head or in a Bowden or PTFE tube. The needed procedure depends on the obstruction’s location and the printer’s design. Avoid pulling harder or dismantling parts based on instructions for a different model.
For the MINI and MINI+ specifically, Prusa’s failed-unload guide says an enlarged or irregular filament tip can become stuck in the Bowden or hotend PTFE tube. Its troubleshooting procedure keeps the nozzle at the loaded filament’s temperature and gives model-specific steps for locating and clearing the obstruction. Follow that guide only if you have one of the listed models.
Prusa’s manual-removal guide describes procedures for named Prusa printer families when filament has broken. Depending on where the strand broke, the steps may involve opening the idler door; one procedure uses needle-nose pliers to draw filament through the extruder. These are troubleshooting instructions for compatible models, not a normal unload method or universal directions.

Protect yourself from hot printer parts
A heated nozzle and heater block can burn you. Keep your fingers clear of the hotend and lower extruder area while following a heated removal procedure. Prusa explicitly warns about these hazards in its MINI/MINI+ troubleshooting instructions and manual-removal guide. If you are uncertain how to access the filament safely, stop and consult the printer’s manual or manufacturer support.
