Use up or remove as much product as you reasonably can, then sort each empty packaging part under your local recycling service’s rules. A bottle’s recycling symbol does not guarantee that its pump, cap, sleeve, jar or tube is accepted curbside. Check local rules first; use a current brand or retailer take-back scheme for items they exclude, and consider a specialist recycler only if the item meets its acceptance rules.
Prepare the packaging before sorting it
- Use up the contents or remove what remains. Scrape or dispense out as much product as practical. Do not send a dripping container through a mail-in program.
- Separate removable parts. Check the body, cap, pump, spray, label and any outer sleeve individually. Different components may use different materials and follow different routes.
- Follow the specific service’s cleaning instructions. Rinsing is not a universal requirement. TerraCycle says washing is not necessary for its general collection process, but its Canadian Beauty Products and Packaging Zero Waste Box instructions require rinsed packaging to be completely dry before shipping and say containers must not be dripping. Curbside services may set their own rules.
Check local recycling rules for every part
Look up your municipality or waste collector’s current accepted-material list and follow its directions for containers and removable components. Do not assume that a plastic or glass container, or its recycling symbol, settles whether the whole package belongs in the curbside bin.

Rules can differ even between places that accept similar containers. For example, Edinburgh Council accepts clean plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays in specified bins, allows labels to remain, asks residents to remove a sleeve made from a different plastic, and says to remove pump sprays. The council also says it does not collect other types of plastic. Those are Edinburgh instructions, not universal guidance: Edinburgh Council’s recycling guidance.
- If a component is accepted, prepare and sort it exactly as the local service instructs.
- If the service excludes a part, set it aside rather than putting it in the bin by guesswork.
- If local instructions are unclear, contact the waste service before putting a mixed-material or small component in the recycling.
Why beauty packaging can be hard to recycle curbside
Beauty packaging may combine materials in small or complex parts, such as pumps, wands, caps and layered sleeves. TerraCycle’s 2023 report identifies small size, mixed composition, contamination and low material value as factors that can make these packages costly for local recyclers to handle. That helps explain why a container’s material or recycling symbol alone may not predict local acceptance.

Use a take-back scheme for items local service rejects
Search the product brand’s and nearby retailers’ current recycling or take-back information. Before collecting or mailing anything, verify which products and packaging the scheme accepts, whether it is brand-specific, where participating drop-off points are, whether enrollment is open, and what preparation or mailing terms apply. A retailer’s service may not be available at every store.
One dated example is Shoppers Drug Mart’s March 25, 2024 announcement of a TerraCycle mail-in program for Quo Beauty cosmetics in Canada. At launch, examples included eligible plastic and glass tubes, pots, pumps, sprays and jars, as well as lipstick, mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, foundation, powder and concealer components. It excluded nail-polish and nail-polish-remover bottles, wipes, sponges, brushes and pressurized cans. Because the announcement describes the program at launch, check whether it is currently open and confirm the live accepted-items list before relying on it: Shoppers Drug Mart and TerraCycle’s announcement.

Consider specialist recycling only when the item qualifies
If neither local collection nor a current free or retailer take-back option accepts an empty, hard-to-recycle package, a specialist service may be an alternative. Check its country availability, accepted items, preparation rules and cost before choosing it.

TerraCycle also describes sponsored free programs, retailer or drop-off options, and paid services; eligibility and availability depend on the program. Its 2023 report says it recycled 1,422,848 lb of hard-to-recycle personal-care and beauty packaging waste that year. That figure describes TerraCycle’s reported activity, not the amount recycled through curbside services generally: TerraCycle’s beauty-waste program information.
Choose the route that fits the package
| Route | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Local curbside collection | The local service lists the package or component as accepted. | Accepted materials and instructions for cleaning, pumps, caps, labels and sleeves. |
| Brand or retailer take-back | A current scheme accepts that product or packaging in your location. | Eligibility, accepted items, participating location, whether enrollment is open, and drop-off or mailing requirements. |
| Specialist mail-in recycling | The specific empty package meets a specialist recycler’s current rules and other routes are unsuitable. | Geographic availability, exclusions, preparation requirements and cost. |
A quick decision checklist
- Is as much product as practical removed?
- Have you checked the rules for the container and each removable part?
- Does the local service accept each component, and have you followed its preparation instructions?
- If not, does a current brand or retailer scheme accept it at a convenient participating location?
- If neither route works, does a specialist program accept the specific item in your country?
