The “Do more with AI Mode” and “Create Images” buttons under the search box on Chrome’s New Tab page cannot be hidden with a dedicated switch in Chrome’s documented New Tab settings. Google’s official controls cover shortcuts, cards, and appearance. The only workaround reported by users is an experimental flag, and it is not a supported setting. Managed work or school computers may have an administrator policy that controls AI search recommendations on the New Tab page, and that route is the one to use there.
What this prompt is and what it is not
The buttons appear on the New Tab page in desktop Chrome, directly under the search box. They are not AI Overviews or AI Mode answers that show up in Google Search results. Turning off the New Tab prompt will not change how Google Search displays its results, and turning off AI features in Search will not necessarily remove the prompt from Chrome’s New Tab page. Keeping these two places separate avoids chasing the wrong setting.

The prompt may not appear for every user. It is part of a staged interface rollout, so if you do not see the button on your New Tab page, there is nothing to remove.

Google’s Chrome Help page “Customize your New Tab page in Chrome” (Computer) covers what you can change. Customization requires that you are signed in to a Google Account and that Google is your default search engine. If either condition is not met, the controls below may be unavailable.

In a September 2026 thread in the Google Gemini Apps Help Community, one user reported turning off AI-related cards and still seeing “Do more with AI mode” and “Create Images.” Community posts are not official documentation, but the report shows that these controls may not remove the prompt. If the button remains after step 5, move on to the next step.
Step 2: Use the community-reported flag workaround
In the same thread, a Product Expert reply dated September 26, 2026 described disabling a Chrome experimental flag called NTP Composebox. The reply reported that this removed both the AI Mode and Create Images prompts for that user. This is an anecdotal result, not a Google-supported stable setting, and it may not work on your Chrome version or on every account.
- Type
chrome://flagsinto the address bar and press Enter. - Click the search field at the top of the flags page and type NTP Composebox.
- Open the dropdown next to the flag and set it to Disabled.
- Click Relaunch at the bottom of the page to restart Chrome.
- Open a new tab and check the New Tab page.
Flags are experimental. Their names, availability, and effects can change between Chrome releases, and a flag can be removed entirely. If the flag does not appear, it is not available in your build, so do not look for an alternative flag with a similar name. If the change causes problems, return the dropdown to Default and relaunch Chrome. Do not turn off Chrome security updates to keep this change; the flag does not require that and the two are unrelated.

Step 3: On a managed computer, ask your administrator about the AIModeSettings policy
If your work or school sets up Chrome for you, you may not be able to change flags or the New Tab settings. Google’s Chrome 139 Enterprise and Education release notes list an AIModeSettings policy that controls search recommendations in the address bar and the New Tab page search box. The release note confirms that the policy exists, but the material available for this article does not establish what each policy value does, which platforms support each value, or whether it is suitable for personal devices that are not managed.
- Ask your Chrome administrator whether the AIModeSettings policy is configured and what value they want for your organization.
- Do not set this policy yourself on a work or school device; changing managed policy belongs to the administrator.
- On a personal computer, check the current Chrome Enterprise policy documentation before using any policy setting, because a value that appears in a forum post may not match your Chrome version.
Comparing the three routes
| Route | Who can use it | Stability | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customize Chrome (Shortcuts and Cards) | Any signed-in user with Google as default search engine | Official Google Chrome Help controls | Shortcuts, cards, and appearance; does not document control of the AI Mode prompt |
| NTP Composebox flag at chrome://flags | Users whose Chrome build still shows the flag; not available on managed devices that lock flags | Experimental; community-reported result only; may be removed or change | Reported to remove the AI Mode and Create Images prompts for one user; effect on other versions not stated |
| AIModeSettings policy | Administrators of managed Chrome environments | Official policy listed in Chrome 139 Enterprise and Education release notes | Search recommendations in the address bar and New Tab search box; effect on the New Tab AI buttons not confirmed in the source material |
If none of these routes works
- Confirm you are on the New Tab page in desktop Chrome and not a different surface, such as a search results page or an extension’s new tab.
- Check whether the flag is missing from
chrome://flags. If it is, the workaround is not available for your build. - Check the current Chrome Help pages or the Google Gemini Apps Help Community for updates, since the button may depend on the rollout stage.
- Send feedback through Chrome’s Help menu and choose Report an issue, describing the New Tab page button and your Chrome version.
There is no physical product or accessory involved. The fix is a browser setting, an experimental flag, or an administrator policy.
The Bottom Line
Start with Customize Chrome, then try disabling the NTP Composebox flag if your build offers it. On a work or school computer, ask your administrator about the AIModeSettings policy instead of changing flags yourself.
