Remove long pauses with Audacity
Audacity’s Truncate Silence effect detects passages that stay below a chosen volume threshold for a specified minimum time. It can shorten those passages to a consistent length or reduce only the excess time in longer gaps. For this workflow, you open the recording in Audacity, edit it there, and export the result; you do not need to upload the file to a web trimmer.

- Open or import your spoken recording in Audacity.
- Select the track or passage you want to process.
- Choose Effect > Special > Truncate Silence.
- Set the detection threshold and minimum duration. The Audacity Development Manual documents a threshold range of -20 dB to -80 dB and a minimum duration as short as 0.001 seconds. These are control ranges, not recommended presets for speech.
- Choose a shortening mode: Truncate Detected Silence or Compress Excess Silence.
- Preview the change, inspect the waveform, and listen through the edited passage. Adjust settings if a breath, quiet word, fade, or meaningful pause has been cut.
- Export the edited audio.
In the effect’s terminology, “silence” does not have to be digital zero. The Audacity Development Manual, “Truncate Silence,” defines it as sound below the detection threshold. A quiet word or the tail of a fade can therefore be detected if it stays below that threshold long enough.

Neither mode decides what sounds natural for your speaker. A brief pause can signal a thought change, emphasis, or a breath. Audacity’s “Basic audio editing” guidance says, “Leave the breaths in: cutting every pause makes speech sound unnatural and rushed.”

Adjust detection without overcutting
The threshold controls how quiet a passage must be before it qualifies; the minimum duration controls how long it must stay that quiet. A higher, less negative threshold can help detect gaps when there is background noise, according to the manual. If too few gaps are detected, Audacity’s guidance is to increase the threshold or reduce the minimum duration.
- If words or fades are being cut: make detection more conservative by lowering the threshold, increasing the minimum duration, or both, then preview again.
- If obvious gaps remain: raise the threshold or reduce the minimum duration, changing one control at a time so you can hear its effect.
- If the edited speech feels rushed: retain longer pauses or use a less aggressive compression setting; do not remove every breath.
- If room noise remains: note that Truncate Silence changes timing, not background noise in the audio it keeps.
Listen to the transitions as well as checking the waveform. In particular, inspect quiet words and fade tails: a segment can be audible to you yet still fall below the effect’s threshold.

What “without uploading” means here
Opening and editing a recording in Audacity, then exporting it, is a desktop-editor workflow that does not require sending the audio to a web trimmer. The available Audacity instructions establish that workflow, but they do not verify every version’s network activity or support a claim that the application never communicates online. If your requirement is a verified guarantee that no data leaves a device, check the network behavior of the specific software version and computer setup rather than treating local editing alone as proof.
