How to Remove ConfigMgr Package Content From One Distribution Point

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To remove a legacy package’s content from one Configuration Manager distribution point without deleting the package, open the package’s Properties, select Content Locations, choose the target distribution point, and select Remove. For repeatable operations, use Remove-CMContentDistribution from the Configuration Manager site drive.

What removing package content does

A legacy package is a Configuration Manager object with programs, a source path, and distribution relationships to distribution points (DPs) or DP groups. Removing its content from a DP withdraws that content from the selected location; it does not delete the package object or its programs, erase the package source files, or remove the content from other DPs.

This is different from deleting the package or removing the DP role. It also differs from removing a DP from a DP group: group membership changes do not remove content already present on that DP. Microsoft documents the content-removal workflows in its content deployment and management guidance and the group-membership distinction in its distribution point guidance.

Before removing content

Removing content from a DP can leave clients without a usable source if that DP is their only reachable location. Check the package’s current use and the affected clients before proceeding:

  • Confirm the package name and package ID, and identify the exact target DP by its fully qualified name.
  • Review active deployments and task sequences that reference the package.
  • Check the boundary groups associated with the DP and confirm clients have another valid content source, if they still need the package.
  • Make sure no distribution or maintenance operation is still processing for this content.
  • Record the change and intended recovery path in your change-control process.

Remove the package from a DP in the console

The package-specific route is the clearest choice when you know which package to remove from one or more locations. In Configuration Manager current branch, use this path; console labels can vary slightly by build or context.

  1. Open the Configuration Manager console and select Software Library.
  2. Go to Application Management > Packages.
  3. Select the legacy package, then select Properties.
  4. Open Content Locations.
  5. Select the target distribution point and select Remove.
  6. Select OK, then monitor the content operation in the console.

Remove content from the DP properties

Use the DP-centric route when you are auditing a particular distribution point and want to inspect its listed content as you make the change.

  1. In the console, select Administration > Distribution Points.
  2. Select the target DP and open Properties.
  3. Open the Content tab.
  4. Select the package and choose Remove.
  5. Select OK and monitor the operation.

Microsoft documents both console routes in its content management instructions.

Remove content with PowerShell

Use the Configuration Manager PowerShell module and run the command from your site drive. Replace the example site code, package ID, and DP name with values from your environment.

    -DistributionPointName "dp01.contoso.com" `
    -Force

You can target several named DPs in one call or specify a DP group when that broader scope is intended:

$DPs = @("dp01.contoso.com", "dp02.contoso.com")

Remove-CMContentDistribution `
    -PackageId "ABC00001" `
    -DistributionPointName $DPs `
    -Confirm

Remove-CMContentDistribution `
    -PackageId "ABC00001" `
    -DistributionPointGroupName "Branch Office DPs" `
    -Confirm

The cmdlet also accepts package names or package objects. For example:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
$Package = Get-CMPackage -Name "Legacy Finance Tool"

Remove-CMContentDistribution `
    -InputObject $Package `
    -DistributionPointName "dp01.contoso.com" `
    -Confirm

Remove-CMContentDistribution supports several ConfigMgr content types, but use the parameter appropriate to the object. A legacy package uses -PackageId, -PackageName, or a package input object; those are not interchangeable with an application or task-sequence identifier. See Microsoft’s cmdlet reference for supported parameters and current module details.

Do not confuse content removal with package deletion

Operation What it changes Use it to remove one package from one DP?
Remove package content from a DP Removes that package’s distribution from the selected DP; other DPs and the package object remain. Yes
Remove a DP from a DP group Changes group membership; existing content on the DP remains. No, not by itself
Remove-CMPackage Removes the package object from the site database and can remove associated package data. No
Remove the DP role Removes the DP designation from the site system. No
Manually delete content-library files Bypasses Configuration Manager’s content management and risks inconsistent library state. No

Use Remove-CMPackage only when your intent is to delete the package itself. Microsoft describes that separate operation in the Remove-CMPackage reference. Removing a DP role is also a separate administrative task; Remove-CMDistributionPoint is not the command for withdrawing one package.

Verify the removal

  • Reopen the package’s Properties > Content Locations and confirm the target DP is no longer listed for the package.
  • Check the DP’s Properties > Content list and review Monitoring > Distribution Status > Content Status for the operation’s state.
  • Confirm affected clients still have a valid source if the package remains deployed. Monitor deployment or download status after the change.
  • Use the content and distribution views available in your installed Configuration Manager console or module to inspect status. Cmdlet properties can vary by module version, so validate any scripted query against the installed version.

Why files or disk usage may remain

Configuration Manager’s content library can share identical files across content objects. Removing one package may therefore leave shared files in place for another package, and the disk space recovered need not match the package’s apparent size. Microsoft explains this behavior in its article on package actions and the content library.

Wait for the removal operation and subsequent content-library handling to complete before judging free-space change. A smaller-than-expected change does not by itself prove that the package is still distributed. Do not manually delete files under SCCMContentLib, SMSPKG, or related directories; let Configuration Manager manage its content library.

Troubleshoot a removal that does not complete

The Remove option is unavailable or the content remains listed

Confirm you selected the intended package and DP and that the console has refreshed after the operation. Check whether the content is still required by another object or is associated with another package. Shared files can remain for other content objects even after this package’s distribution is withdrawn.

The operation stays in progress or fails

Check Monitoring > Distribution Status > Content Status and inspect the package and DP status. Review the distribution point’s relevant content-distribution logs for your current Configuration Manager build; log names and locations should be confirmed for the installed version rather than assumed to be universal.

A locked network file can prevent ConfigMgr from deleting package content. Microsoft notes this limitation in the Remove-CMPackage documentation. Identify the process or user holding the file open, allow active operations to finish, then retry through the console or supported cmdlet.

Clients fail to retrieve the package afterward

Check whether the affected clients have another reachable DP and whether their boundary-group configuration provides an alternate source. Removing content does not automatically repair deployments or guarantee that clients can use another location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PowerShell cannot find the cmdlet or package

Confirm the Configuration Manager module is imported, the site drive such as ABC: is selected, and the package ID belongs to a legacy package. Verify the DP name and package identifier before retrying; do not substitute a different content-type parameter.

If you are retiring the entire DP

Removing one package’s content is not the same as retiring a distribution point. Plan DP-role removal separately. Cloud DPs have a distinct removal operation; Microsoft states that removing a cloud DP deletes all content stored there. See the Remove-CMCloudDistributionPoint reference before taking that broader action.
