HONOR announced the Magic V Flip in China on June 13, 2024, introducing its first vertically folding, clamshell-style phone. The headline feature was a 4-inch external LTPO display that could handle more than notifications, while China launch pricing started at CNY 4,999 for the 12GB/256GB model. It went on sale in China on June 21, 2024; no international release was confirmed in the launch coverage.
HONOR’s first flip foldable—not its first foldable
The Magic V Flip completed HONOR’s foldable range with a phone that closes vertically like a compact. It was not HONOR’s first foldable: the company had already announced the book-style Magic V as its first foldable flagship in January 2022. The Magic V Flip was specifically HONOR’s first flip or clamshell foldable. See HONOR’s earlier announcement of the Magic V at HONOR’s official site.
HONOR announced the flip model and opened preorders on June 13, 2024, exclusively for the Chinese market. Contemporary reporting described no confirmed international availability. HONOR’s China product page remains online, although its navigation now features later products such as the Magic V Flip2 and Magic V6, so the original phone should be treated as a 2024 launch product rather than the company’s newest clamshell.
The 4-inch cover display is the main attraction
Most flip phones reserve their outer panel for a clock, notifications and a few widgets. HONOR built the Magic V Flip around a substantially larger 4-inch OLED/LTPO cover screen. It has a 1200×1092 resolution, an adaptive 0.1–120Hz refresh range and a claimed 85% screen area with 2.87mm borders. Launch coverage also reported 2160Hz high-frequency PWM dimming and Dolby Vision support.

The panel was designed for one-handed use while the phone was closed. HONOR demonstrated full-screen applications, always-on display functions, notifications, media, social apps, calls and navigation. In principle, that can reduce how often the phone needs to be opened: checking a message, changing music or following directions can happen on the outside.
There are practical limits. Camera cutouts occupy part of the lower-left area, and an app’s usefulness depends on its cover-screen layout, touch targets and software support. A large cover display makes quick tasks more plausible, but it does not guarantee that every Android application behaves well on the narrow outer panel.

Performance, software and the processor trade-off
The phone uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, paired with 12GB RAM in the standard versions. That chip was a previous-generation flagship platform by June 2024. It could help HONOR reach a lower launch price, but the Magic V Flip was not a showcase for the newest silicon available at the time. HONOR also promoted a C1+ radio-frequency enhancement chip and a cooling system.
MagicOS 8.0 ran over Android 14 at launch. The announcement establishes the software version, not a guaranteed update schedule or identical app experience outside China. China-market firmware can differ from international HONOR builds in services, languages, payments and app availability.
Cameras and foldable-specific shooting modes
The rear camera system combines a 50MP Sony IMX906 main sensor with optical image stabilization and a 12MP ultrawide camera. The ultrawide offers a reported 112-degree field of view and macro shooting. A 50MP Sony IMX816 front camera with autofocus handles conventional selfies.

The folding hinge enables several distinctive modes:
- Flex or hovering selfies with the phone partly folded.
- Rear-camera selfies using the cover screen as a preview.
- Dual-screen preview so the subject and photographer can both see the framing.
- A camcorder-style shooting layout and 4K time-lapse recording.
- Portrait-processing and group-photo enhancements.
Sensor names and feature lists do not establish image quality. HONOR’s launch language included premium camera positioning, but claims such as “DSLR-level” are marketing descriptions rather than evidence of equivalent output.

Battery, size and everyday hardware
A 4,800mAh battery is substantial for a clamshell foldable, and 66W wired charging is faster than the charging offered by some competing flip phones. Actual endurance depends on which screen is used, refresh-rate behavior, cellular reception and software optimization; the launch material does not provide an independent runtime test.

The approximately 193g body is relatively light for a foldable. It measures 7.15mm when open and 14.89mm when closed. HONOR promoted its hinge and durability engineering, but the available launch information does not establish long-term hinge or inner-screen reliability. It also does not establish an IP water-resistance rating, wireless charging support, charger-in-box contents or a screen-replacement price.

Was the Magic V Flip available outside China?
No international launch was confirmed when HONOR announced the phone. The announcement covered HONOR’s China website, authorized Chinese e-commerce channels, experience stores and retail outlets. Reports from TechNode and 9to5Google likewise described availability as China-only or unconfirmed internationally.
What import buyers need to verify
- Whether the specific China firmware includes Google Play and the apps you need.
- 4G and 5G band compatibility with your carrier and the exact model number.
- Language, payment, notification and banking-app behavior.
- Warranty, repair and foldable-screen service in your country.
- The final landed cost, including shipping, tax and any importer fees.
There was no established official US price or US carrier model in the launch information. A China-market listing should not be presented as official American or global retail support.
Strengths and limitations at launch
Why it stood out
- A 4-inch cover display capable of more than glanceable notifications.
- A relatively light, approximately 193g design.
- 4,800mAh capacity and 66W wired charging.
- 50MP main and front cameras, with OIS on the main camera.
- Up to 1TB storage, plus a distinctive Jimmy Choo edition.
- Flex-mode photography and dual-screen preview features.
Why buyers needed to hesitate
- The launch was limited to China, with no confirmed international release.
- Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 was not the newest flagship processor in June 2024.
- Cover-screen behavior could vary by application and MagicOS support.
- Imported units could have uncertain Google-service, network, warranty and repair support.
- Long-term foldable durability, battery life and camera quality were not established by the announcement alone.
- No water-resistance rating was established in the cited launch material.
HONOR Magic V Flip: early verdict
The Magic V Flip was a notable first for HONOR because it treated the cover screen as a working display rather than a secondary status panel. Its 4-inch LTPO panel, large battery, fast charging and relatively low China starting price gave the 2024 launch a clear identity. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and China-only distribution made the compromises equally clear. For international buyers, regional software, carrier support, warranty and repair access mattered more than the attractive headline price.
As of August 16, 2026, HONOR’s China site still hosts the original product page, but later foldables such as the Magic V Flip2 and Magic V6 occupy the company’s current navigation. The original Magic V Flip is therefore best understood as HONOR’s 2024 first clamshell model and, for most readers outside China, an import proposition requiring careful verification.
