How to remove blue paragraph symbols in Google Docs

Those blue paragraph symbols in Google Docs are almost always a display setting (formatting marks) that shows paragraph breaks and other hidden structure while you’re editing.

In some cases, though, the blue marks are actual paragraph characters that were copied from another app or inserted by a template—so they can’t be hidden; they have to be removed.

This guide covers both scenarios and gives you several working ways to remove or stop seeing the symbols, depending on what’s actually causing them.

What the blue paragraph symbols mean in Google Docs

In Google Docs, paragraph separators are normally invisible. When you enable formatting marks, Docs displays them as paragraph symbols (often shown in blue).

#1 Best Overall

So you’ll see them:

  • Throughout the document right after you enable formatting marks.
  • Between blocks (pressing Enter creates a new paragraph, which becomes a visible mark).
  • Often only while editing—depending on how the document is being viewed.

If you enable/disable the display setting and the symbols disappear instantly, you’re dealing with formatting marks. If they remain even after turning off formatting marks (or they appear as editable literal characters), use Find and replace to remove them.

Method 1: Turn off formatting marks (the common fix)

This is the quickest way to get rid of blue paragraph symbols when they’re just visual editing marks.

  1. Open your document in Google Docs.
  2. Click the menu View.
  3. Hover Show.
  4. Uncheck Formatting marks.

Immediately re-check the page: the blue paragraph symbols should vanish.

If you’re on mobile (Android/iPhone), formatting marks availability can vary. If you can’t find the menu path, switch to a desktop browser to toggle it reliably.

Method 2: Remove literal paragraph characters with Find and replace

If the symbols are actual characters (not just a display mode), turning off formatting marks won’t help. In that case, you can remove them using Find and replace.

Try removing the paragraph symbol character

  1. Press Ctrl + H (Windows/Chrome) or ⌘ + H (Mac).
  2. In Find, paste the paragraph symbol .
  3. Leave Replace with blank.
  4. Click Replace all.

After it runs, check several paragraphs (top, middle, and near the area where the symbols looked worst).

If the exact character doesn’t match, copy one symbol and reuse it

Sometimes documents contain a different “lookalike” character. Use the one that’s actually in your file.

  1. Click and drag to highlight one blue paragraph symbol.
  2. Copy it (Ctrl + C or ⌘ + C).
  3. Open Find and replace (Ctrl + H / ⌘ + H).
  4. Paste that copied character into Find.
  5. Leave Replace with blank and click Replace all.

Method 3: Paste-clean the content when symbols come from copied text

If those paragraph marks were pasted from Word, PDF text, or a CMS export, the cleanest path is to paste without carrying over hidden formatting characters.

Use Paste without formatting

  1. Select the affected text (start with the smallest block that still shows the blue marks).
  2. Copy it (Ctrl + C / ⌘ + C).
  3. Put your cursor where you want the cleaned version.
  4. In the Google Docs toolbar, use Paste and choose Paste without formatting (wording can vary slightly by UI language).

If you only see the symbols after pasting, this method usually fixes the underlying character pollution.

Alternative: paste into plain text first

For stubborn cases, paste into a plain-text editor first (like a text file editor), then paste back into Google Docs. This strips formatting characters that Google Docs might preserve.

Method 4: Check if the symbols are from a specific formatting mode or add-on

While formatting marks are the usual cause, certain workflows can introduce or display extra editing characters.

Verify you didn’t enable a formatting-mark related option

Go back to View > Show and ensure Formatting marks is unchecked. Reload the page if needed (hard refresh in the browser).

Temporarily disable add-ons

If an add-on is injecting revision/help markup or transforming text, try disabling it:

  1. Click Extensions in the top menu.
  2. Choose Manage add-ons.
  3. Disable the suspected add-on (or remove it temporarily) and reload the document.

Then check whether the blue paragraph symbols are still present.

Troubleshooting when symbols won’t go away

If you turned off formatting marks and the symbols still appear, treat it as a “literal character” issue and remove them—or isolate where they originate.

Undo/redo and refresh

  • Use Undo (Ctrl + Z / ⌘ + Z) if you recently pasted or ran a transformation.
  • Refresh the browser tab (Ctrl+R / Cmd+R).

Check document formatting boundaries

Look for patterns: do the symbols appear only inside certain headings, tables, or text boxes? If yes, copy a small region with and without the symbols and paste it cleanly using Paste without formatting.

Run Find and replace in smaller scopes

If Replace all didn’t change anything, you might be using the wrong character (or the symbol is represented differently). Do this:

  1. Highlight a single paragraph that contains the blue mark.
  2. Copy just that paragraph’s text.
  3. Paste it into a scratch area in the same doc (or a new doc).
  4. Repeat Find and replace there, using the highlighted character copied from the scratch paragraph.

Compare behavior with a new blank document

To confirm whether the marks are part of the content or a display setting, test by creating a new Google Doc and pasting a chunk of the problem text. If the blue symbols carry over into the new doc, they’re literal characters or formatting artifacts—not just display settings.

Common mistakes that make the symbols look “stuck”

  • Only hiding formatting marks when the content contains literal paragraph characters.
  • Typing ¶ manually instead of copying the exact character from your doc (some sources use lookalikes).
  • Replacing all globally without checking impact—paragraph characters may exist legitimately in quotes or imported templates.
  • Pasting with formatting repeatedly from the same source, reintroducing the same symbols.

FAQ

Will blue paragraph symbols print?

If they’re formatting marks from the display toggle, they usually won’t behave like real content and won’t print as visible symbols. If they’re literal paragraph characters in the text, they can appear depending on the content and export method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do I only see them after I click somewhere in the document?

That pattern often means formatting marks are enabled. Google Docs can show editing structure more clearly when the document is active in the editor.

What if I don’t have the Formatting marks option in View?

Check you’re using Google Docs in a desktop browser. Also verify you’re not in a limited viewer context (some document modes and permissions don’t expose editor-only display controls).

Can I remove them without using Find and replace?

Yes, if they’re purely formatting marks: disable View > Show > Formatting marks. If they’re literal characters, Find and replace (or pasting cleanly without formatting) is the reliable approach.

Do tables or text boxes affect how they appear?

They can. Imported content inside tables sometimes brings hidden characters along with it. If the symbols cluster in a table or text box, isolate that content and paste cleanly into the same container.

Bottom Line

Try View > Show > Formatting marks first—most blue paragraph symbols in Google Docs are just editing marks. If they still remain, remove the actual paragraph character by using Ctrl/⌘ + H and replacing the character with nothing, or paste the content back using Paste without formatting.

Once you identify whether you’re dealing with a display toggle or literal characters, the fix is fast and repeatable.
