First check whether the black bars are part of the video image or just empty space added by the player. If they are baked into the picture, crop or reframe the footage before streaming and inspect the result for anything important that the crop may cut off. If the bars are outside the picture, do not edit the video just to fill the player: YouTube adapts its layout to different aspect ratios.
Check whether the bars are in the video or the player
Pause on a representative frame. Look at the image itself, not just the full playback window. If the footage fills a rectangle with black bands inside its edges, those bands are part of the video and require an edit. If the footage ends and the player shows unused black space around it, the player is displaying a different aspect ratio; editing the file may unnecessarily change its composition.

YouTube Help advises, “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” (YouTube Help, “Video resolution & aspect ratios – Computer,” checked 2026-10-03.) YouTube’s computer player uses 16:9 as its standard ratio but adapts to other video aspect ratios. That makes 16:9 a common presentation choice, not a rule that every source must be forced to fill.

Crop embedded bars without losing important content
- Choose a representative frame. Check scenes with the widest subjects, captions, titles, logos, or graphics near the edges—not only a simple opening shot.
- Crop or reframe only as much as needed. In your video editor, adjust the frame so the embedded bands are outside the visible picture. The exact controls depend on the editor; YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular tool or sequence of editing controls.
- Review the result against the uncropped source. Check the beginning, middle, and end, including shots where subjects move. Make sure faces, text, and other meaningful details remain visible at the final output size.
- Choose the composition deliberately. Cropping can remove picture content. If removing the bars would cut off something important, keep the complete image and accept unused space rather than stretching the footage or cropping blindly.
- Export a suitable file. YouTube’s recommended upload settings include MP4, H.264, progressive scan, and the same frame rate as the recording. These are delivery recommendations; they do not themselves remove bars.
Do not confuse a vertical live layout with editing the source
YouTube Live Control Room documents dual horizontal and vertical live streams. By default, the vertical output center-crops horizontal content; creators can adjust the vertical layout, zoom, and position. Documented layout choices include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked.

Those controls change the live presentation. They are not a general repair for bars already embedded in a prerecorded video. If the source contains bands, prepare and inspect the source edit separately from any vertical live layout.
Preview and test the stream before relying on it
- Preview the actual output in YouTube Live Control Room and check both picture framing and audio.
- Confirm the event is accessible to the intended audience and that the correct stream configuration is selected.
- If you are using an encoder, monitor the stream and leave headroom in your upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends testing the setup in advance.
- If you need an archive, verify that local archive files are being written as expected.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Keyframe frequency affects live delivery, not whether black bars are embedded in the prerecorded source. YouTube’s preparation guidance recommends testing and monitoring; it does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 uptime.

Troubleshooting: bars remain or the crop looks wrong
- Bars appear only around the player: The player may be adapting to the video’s aspect ratio. Test the intended viewing device before changing the file.
- Bars remain inside the picture after editing: They may still be part of the exported frame. Revisit the crop or reframe, then inspect the exported video—not just the editor preview.
- The crop cuts off faces, captions, or graphics: Reduce or reposition the crop. If the full composition matters, preserve the complete image rather than forcing it into a different ratio.
- The horizontal stream looks fine but the vertical version does not: Review the vertical layout, crop, zoom, and position in Live Control Room. This is a separate live composition from the source-video edit.
- The stream preview has framing or playback problems: Check the prepared file and selected stream configuration, then test and monitor the actual output before leaving it running.
