Work gently and do not force plastic parts.
Before you start, identify the case style
Check the case’s name or packaging if available. Removal depends on its construction; the steps below distinguish the Defender from other flexible cases and hard shells. OtterBox’s Galaxy S21 instructions index lists instructions for the S21 family, but its listed S21-family item is for an Alpha Flex screen protector—not a phone-case removal procedure: OtterBox for Samsung: Case Instructions.

Remove an OtterBox Defender case
- Peel off the flexible outer layer. Work the silicone shell back from around the device. OtterBox says, “The easiest way to remove the Defender Series case is to peel back the outer silicone layer first.” (OtterBox FAQs.)
- Separate the hard frame. Once the outer layer is off, release the corner tabs to separate the two polycarbonate pieces.
- Lift the phone out carefully. Once the frame is apart, remove the phone without levering against its buttons, camera, or screen.
Remove another flexible OtterBox case
- Choose an upper corner away from the phone’s buttons and camera.
- Gently pull that corner free from the phone.
- Continue easing the case off along the edges rather than pulling hard from one point.
This is OtterBox’s general method for flexible cases; the exact fit can vary by case design. See How to Take Off a Phone Case.

- Find a corner tab and gently release it.
- Continue releasing the case around the edges, supporting the shell as you work.
- Stop if the plastic resists rather than bending or twisting it forcefully.
OtterBox cautions that too much pressure can break plastic. Its general guidance describes this corner-tab approach for hard cases: How to Take Off a Phone Case.

Keep screen-protector removal separate
A screen protector is not the phone case. The S21-family item shown on OtterBox’s Samsung instructions page is for installing an Alpha Flex screen protector; it does not give a case-specific removal procedure for the Galaxy S21.

Galaxy S21 5G, S21+ 5G, and S21 Ultra 5G are separate device variants. OtterBox’s January 2021 announcement identifies cases for those models and historical lines including Symmetry, Defender, and Otter + Pop Symmetry; it does not establish current stock or availability.
