To remove a Yale smart lock from a door, first identify its exact model and follow that model’s installation manual; Yale does not provide one universal removal sequence for every lock. Removing the hardware, removing a keyed cylinder, taking out a Home Module, and removing a lock from the Yale Home app are different jobs. A factory reset changes the lock’s digital setup—it does not take the lock off the door.
First, identify what you mean by “remove”
Choose the task before undoing screws or changing settings. The required steps depend on the lock family and, in some cases, the regional version of the hardware.

- Remove the whole lock: Use the installation manual for the exact model and region. The Yale instructions cited here do not establish a complete, shared removal procedure for every Yale smart-lock family.
- Remove a keyed cylinder: The instructions below apply to the keyed Assure deadbolt design described in Yale’s manual, not to every Yale lock.
- Remove a Yale Home Module: Follow Yale’s power-down guidance before removing the module.
- Remove the lock from app or account access: Use Yale Home’s factory-reset guidance. This changes digital ownership and configuration, not the physical installation.
Check the model name and number on the lock, its packaging, or the paperwork, then obtain the corresponding manual. Yale provides separate instructions for Assure deadbolts and Assure levers, and regional versions may differ. See Yale’s Assure support information and the keyed Assure deadbolt manual.

How to remove an Assure keyed deadbolt cylinder
Yale’s keyed Assure deadbolt manual describes cylinder removal separately from removal of the whole lock. Use these steps only if your lock matches that cylinder design.

- Remove the outside escutcheon.
- Remove the rubber gasket.
- With a small flathead screwdriver, gently lift the cylinder-retaining spring.
- Pull the cylinder outward. Its top notch engages with the spring.
The manual describes reversing the process to install a cylinder. Before choosing a replacement, check that it matches the lock configuration, door thickness, and tailpiece dimensions specified for your model; do not assume another cylinder will fit.
Assure interior screws: model-specific guidance, not a full removal recipe
For an Assure interior-cable troubleshooting procedure, Yale instructs users to remove the battery cover and four AA batteries, then remove three small black screws—two in the battery compartment and one at the base of the interior—to dismantle the interior side. This is guidance for that troubleshooting task, not a complete set of whole-lock removal instructions for all Assure models. Use the exact model’s installation manual for the full removal sequence. The details appear in Yale’s Assure support instructions.

How to remove a Yale Home Module
- Remove at least one battery to cut power to the lock.
- Wait approximately 10 seconds for the lock to power down.
- Remove the module.
Yale gives this power precaution for removing or reinserting a Home Module. Follow the instructions for your lock and module rather than treating module removal as whole-lock removal. See Yale Home Module support.
How to remove a lock from Yale Home
If by “remove” you mean clear the lock’s digital setup, Yale’s factory-reset instructions say a reset erases owner and guest data and removes the lock from associated owner and guest keychains. Disconnect a paired keypad before resetting. These steps affect app access and configuration; they do not detach the lock from the door. Follow Yale’s current Yale Home reset instructions for the lock and app version you use.

- KEY-FREE ENTRY MADE SIMPLE: No app. No phone setup. No Wi-Fi. This Yale lock is a straightforward keyless deadbolt lock that lets you ditch the keys without the tech learning curve. Just install, create your codes, and go.
- SHARE ACCESS YOUR WAY: No more hiding spare keys. Create up to 20 unique entry codes directly on your electronic door lock. Give family their own code, let the dog walker in, or set one for the neighbor who waters your plants.
- WONDERING IF YOU LOCKED UP? Rush out the door without a second thought. Auto-Lock secures the deadbolt behind you so you never have to wonder if you remembered to lock up.
- BUILT FOR EVERYDAY USE: The backlit keypad makes code entry easy day or night. And if you ever want a traditional option, a backup key is included for peace of mind.
- ENGINEERED FOR RELIABILITY: Grade 3 certified by BHMA for residential-grade durability. Built to perform from -22°F winters to 140°F summer heat. Low-power alerts let you know when batteries are running low.
A reset also has a practical consequence for reusing the lock: Yale’s cited keyed Assure manual says that a factory reset deletes all user codes, including the Master Entry Code, and restores programming features to their defaults. The Master Entry Code must be created before further programming. Do not reset simply to remove physical hardware unless you also intend to erase its programmed access data.

- You cannot confirm the exact model or the manual does not match the lock’s appearance or hardware.
- The lock is stuck, a cable appears damaged, or a fastener will not release with the appropriate tool.
- You are replacing a cylinder or other door hardware and have not confirmed compatibility with the door and lock.
Do not force the hardware or improvise a sequence from instructions for a different Yale family. Consult the exact model’s installation manual or Yale support, particularly where removal could damage wiring or door hardware.
