You can remove a visible label or formatting artifact without changing the surrounding text, but there is no supported universal method that guarantees removal of an embedded text watermark while preserving every aspect of meaning. First identify whether you are dealing with visible document content, a signal embedded in generated text, or provenance metadata attached to a file. These are different things, and changing one does not necessarily change the others.
Identify what kind of watermark you have
“Watermark” can describe a visible mark, a signal woven into text, or information about a file’s history. Check which one is actually present before editing: each requires a different response, and removing one does not prove that the others are gone.

Visible label or formatting artifact
A visible phrase, character, or formatting element may be ordinary document content or an annotation. If it is clearly an unwanted visible artifact, you can edit that item directly. Preserve a copy first, then compare the edited passage with the original so you can catch accidental changes to qualifications, names, numbers, negation, or attribution.

An embedded signal may not look like anything on the page. Anthropic says that supported Claude models weave an imperceptible watermark directly into generated text, and that it may travel when text is copied and persist through some editing. Anthropic also says the watermark does not change the meaning, quality, or readability of its responses; that statement applies to the supported Claude models Anthropic describes, not every watermarking design. File provenance information
Content Credentials are provenance information associated with supported files, not visible text marks. C2PA describes signed manifests and invisible watermarks as one possible “soft binding” mechanism for connecting a credential to an asset. Editing a file’s metadata is therefore not the same as editing its text. If provenance information is missing, that alone does not establish that the content was never generated or edited. How to remove a visible text artifact carefully
- Keep an untouched original. Duplicate the document or save a separate copy before editing, so you can restore or compare the source.
- Inspect the mark. Determine whether it is part of the text, an annotation, or file-level provenance information. Do not treat these as interchangeable.
- Edit only the visible artifact. Remove the specific label or formatting element, rather than rewriting nearby sentences.
- Compare the edited passage with the original. Check for missing or altered facts, qualifications, names, numbers, negation, attribution, and emphasis.
- Record changes if provenance matters. Keep the original and note what you edited instead of presenting a modified file as an untouched original.
Why paraphrasing is not a guaranteed solution
Rewording text can change nuance, emphasis, attribution, or factual qualifications. It may also weaken or remove a provenance signal, but that outcome depends on the particular watermark system and transformation. No method established here guarantees both that an embedded text watermark is removed and that every aspect of meaning is preserved. Do not treat a paraphrasing tool’s claim as proof of either result without credible testing for the specific watermark involved and a separate evaluation of meaning preservation.

Interpret watermark detector results narrowly
A “not detected” result means only that the detector did not find a signal it supports under its particular conditions. It does not prove that the text was written by a person or was never AI-generated. Detection behavior also cannot establish that text retained its original meaning after editing.

OpenAI cautions: “Don’t use repeated queries to reverse-engineer, remove, or evade a watermark.” Read its content provenance guidance. Avoid using repeated detector attempts as a way to tune text against a watermark.
