To remove only speech recognition, uninstall its optional feature in Settings > System > Optional features > Installed features. To remove every component for a language, remove that language under Settings > Time & language > Language & region instead. These actions have different effects: removing the language can also remove its other language resources.
Choose what you want to remove
Windows treats a language and its optional features as related but separate items. A language may have speech recognition, text-to-speech, handwriting, and other resources. Removing one optional feature preserves the rest of the language setup; removing the language has a broader effect. Microsoft describes speech recognition as an optional language feature in its Windows 11 language settings guidance.

Remove only the speech-recognition feature
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Optional features > Installed features.
- Search the installed-features list for the relevant language or speech feature.
- Expand the matching item, verify it is the feature you intend to remove, then select Remove.
Microsoft documents this route for removing optional Windows 11 features in its optional-features guidance. The feature name displayed can vary by installed locale and Windows build, so use the label shown on your PC rather than assuming every system uses identical wording.

- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Under Preferred languages, locate the language you want to remove and select its ellipsis menu.
- Select Remove, then confirm.
Windows does not allow removal of the currently selected display language. If Remove is unavailable or disabled, select another Windows display language first, then try again, as explained in Microsoft’s language settings guidance.

Use DISM or PowerShell only after checking the exact capability
Administrators can service installed Windows capabilities from the command line, but the capability name must match the installed feature and locale. Microsoft documents DISM removal with this syntax:
Dism /Online /Remove-Capability /CapabilityName:<capability-name>
Microsoft’s example, Language.Basic~~~en-US~0.0.1.0, removes a Basic language capability; it is not a speech-recognition command. Inventory installed capabilities and verify the exact locale-specific identifier before removing anything. See Microsoft’s DISM capabilities servicing documentation.

PowerShell also supports capability removal through Remove-WindowsCapability. Microsoft’s cmdlet documentation includes a TextToSpeech example; that example shows the general servicing method, not a universal Speech capability name. Do not substitute a guessed identifier.

Will removing it affect voice typing or Voice Access?
Microsoft says speech-recognition language features are not required for voice typing to work; see its voice typing guidance. Windows terminology has also changed: Microsoft states that Voice Access replaced Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) for Windows 11 22H2 and later in September 2024, in its Windows Speech Recognition commands article. The legacy name in older settings or help pages may therefore not describe the current Windows 11 voice-control feature.
