For a regular, user-installed screen protector, turn off your Pixel, gently lift one corner, then peel the protector back slowly and evenly. Use a fingernail or tape for flexible film; a stiff plastic card can help lift thicker tempered glass. Stop if it will not release easily. If the film is on the inner display of a Pixel Fold, do not try to remove it—Google warns that picking at or removing it can damage the foldable display.
First, make sure it is a removable protector
Most owners can remove a separately applied film or tempered-glass protector using the steps below. The important exception is the protective film on a Pixel Fold’s inner display. Google’s Pixel cleaning guidance says not to pick at its edges or try to remove it, because doing so can harm the foldable display. If you are unsure whether a layer is a user-installed accessory or part of the foldable display’s protection, do not pry at it.

Remove an ordinary screen protector
- Turn off the phone. This is general removal guidance, not a Pixel-specific Google instruction.
- Lift one corner gently. For flexible film, try a fingernail or press a small piece of tape onto a corner and pull it back. For thicker glass, Spigen recommends using a stiff card, such as an ID or credit card, to raise a corner. These are alternatives for getting an edge started; do not push a tool under the display.
- Peel slowly once the edge is free. Hold the lifted edge and pull back gradually, keeping the peel even rather than yanking or sharply bending the protector. If glass is cracked or seems likely to break, handle it carefully; Asurion’s general removal guidance suggests wearing gloves when a glass protector may break.
- Stop if it resists. Do not force a stuck protector, pry with a sharp metal tool, or apply heat based on an unverified method. The cited instructions do not establish a Pixel-specific technique for unusually stubborn protectors. If the phone’s display itself is damaged, use Google’s repair options rather than treating repair as a routine part of protector removal.
Choose a replacement that fits your Pixel
A replacement is optional. If you install one, check the exact Pixel model before buying: Google’s Fingerprint Unlock compatibility page lists tested “Made for Google” protectors by model and notes that screen protectors can affect fingerprint sensing. The available guidance does not establish that flexible film or tempered glass is universally better, so choose by fit and preference rather than assuming one material is best.

Google says a protector that covers the screen, including its corners and edges, can help prevent scratches. That is a scratch-prevention benefit, not a guarantee against drops or other damage. See Google’s screen-protection guidance.
