To remove a custom domain from Microsoft 365, first move every account, email address, group, and service that still depends on it. Then, in the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Settings > Domains, select the domain, and choose Remove domain. Domain removal is the last step—not a substitute for moving DNS or mail routing.
Before you remove the domain
Make sure the domain is not the tenant’s default domain and identify where it is still in use. Microsoft lists user accounts, administrator sign-ins, shared and resource mailboxes, contacts, Microsoft 365 groups, distribution lists, and Teams as possible dependencies. Microsoft Entra can also block deletion when application identifier URIs or other directory references still use the domain.

The initial .onmicrosoft.com domain cannot be removed. If the target is the default or initial domain, it cannot be removed as an ordinary custom domain; check the specific error and Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance before proceeding.

Move user accounts and protect administrator access
- In the Microsoft 365 admin center, open Users > Active users.
- Select the users who need a new sign-in domain, choose Change domains, and assign an available replacement domain.
- Change the administrator’s sign-in too if it uses the retiring domain. If you change your own username, sign out and sign back in with the new one.
If you are the only Global Administrator using the retiring domain, make sure another Global Administrator exists on a different domain before changing your username. This preserves an independent administrator sign-in path.
Update groups, mailboxes, aliases, and other references
Change email addresses that end in the retiring domain for Microsoft 365 groups, Teams-connected groups, distribution lists, and mail-enabled groups. Review shared and resource mailboxes, contacts, mailbox aliases, and any remaining user addresses as well. Exchange-managed groups may need to be updated or cleaned up in the Exchange admin center.

For a large tenant, Microsoft recommends querying users and updating them with Microsoft Graph PowerShell, including the Update-MgUser and Update-MgDomain guidance. This can help with hundreds or thousands of user accounts, but it is not a universal cleanup script: check groups, mailboxes, aliases, application identifiers, and other object types separately.

Find out where the domain’s nameservers are hosted. The registrar, which manages the domain registration, and the DNS hosting provider do not have to be the same organization. Removing the domain from Microsoft 365 does not change DNS records at an external registrar or DNS host.

- If nameservers are hosted by Microsoft: follow Microsoft’s steps for Microsoft-hosted nameservers and update the required records both in Microsoft 365 and with the new nameserver provider.
- If nameservers are hosted elsewhere: manage the records with that DNS provider. Confirm the intended MX destination and preserve any website or other service records that still need to work.
Before making changes, decide where mail should go after the move. Update the MX record to the intended email provider and plan any other necessary DNS changes. Do not assume that removing the domain also transfers DNS hosting or redirects mail.
Remove the domain in the Microsoft 365 admin center
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center with an administrator account.
- Open Settings > Domains.
- Select the custom domain you have prepared for removal.
- Choose Remove domain and follow the prompts.
Microsoft provides an additional DNS procedure for custom domains. Follow the instructions shown for the domain and its nameserver setup; removing the domain may be delayed if references remain.

Choose the right route for your situation

If Microsoft 365 will not remove the domain
Use the exact error message to find the relevant Microsoft troubleshooting path rather than retrying without changing anything. Common blocker categories include:

- The domain is the default or initial domain, or a subdomain is still associated with it.
- A user, administrator, mailbox, contact, alias, group, distribution list, or Teams-connected group still references it.
- An application identifier URI or primary-domain setting still depends on it.
- A hybrid or federated configuration has a source-of-authority dependency that cannot be cleared by a cloud-only edit.
Microsoft Entra describes domain deletion as asynchronous and notes that it can take up to 24 hours. Microsoft’s admin guidance estimates removal may take as little as five minutes when few references remain, or several hours up to a day when there are many. These are estimates, not a guaranteed completion time; allow time for processing and verify the domain’s status in the admin center.
