First identify where the black appears: behind a subject in an image, across a website or app, only in a video-editing preview, or across the entire display. Each case has a different cause. If it is an image, decide whether you want to replace the black with another solid background or make it transparent; if a whole display is black, do not use image-editing steps or apply a blanket reset.
Identify what is black before changing anything
- Only an image’s background is black: use background removal, masking, or recoloring.
- A website or app is dark: check whether it is using its own dark theme or reflecting browser, operating-system, extension, or user-selected colors.
- The entire display is black: image tools will not help. The right diagnosis depends on the device, operating system, whether a cursor or menus remain visible, and what changed just before the problem began.
- Black appears only in a video editor or mask view: it may represent transparency rather than black picture content.
For an image, choose the result you want
Removing a black background can mean three different things. Recoloring keeps the image opaque and substitutes another background. Removing to transparency hides the background so a different canvas, page, or color can show through. Manual refinement corrects missed areas or rough edges after an automatic selection.

Replace black with a different background
If the final image needs a solid color or another picture behind the subject, place that background beneath the subject layer in an editor, or use a tool’s background-editing step. This keeps the output opaque. A transparent file is not required unless you want the background to remain changeable when the image is used elsewhere.

Background-removal tools attempt to separate the subject from the surrounding area and make the removed area transparent. Canva describes a workflow for removing a black background and says the result can have a transparent canvas; its page lists JPG, PNG, HEIC/HEIF, WebP, and SVG as accepted types. The listed formats and availability are vendor-stated product details and can change. See Canva’s transparent-background instructions.

Erase.bg describes uploading or dragging in an image, removing the background, optionally editing the result, and downloading it. Its page lists PNG, JPEG/JPG, and WebP in the workflow. These are the vendor’s stated steps and supported types, not an independent performance comparison. See Erase.bg’s background-removal workflow.
After downloading, check that the file actually preserves transparency. PNG commonly supports it, but the file extension alone is not proof: open the image in an editor that displays transparency as a checkerboard, or place it over a colored layer or page. If black remains, the background may have been exported as opaque pixels instead of transparent ones.

Refine edges and protect dark details
Automatic selection can mistake dark subject details—such as hair, clothing, or an object’s shadow—for the black background. Inspect the boundary at high zoom, including gaps and semi-transparent edges. Restore missing subject areas with a brush or refine the mask; remove leftover black fringe where needed. Vendor feature descriptions do not establish that a tool will separate every subject cleanly, and Erase.bg’s FAQ notes that detail loss or compression may occur depending on image complexity.

Choose a tool with the right workflow
Canva says its background remover is free to use once; Erase.bg promotes free removal on its vendor page. Treat those as changeable vendor claims rather than a guarantee of ongoing free access or particular plan terms. Compare tools by the file types you need, whether they produce transparency or let you replace the background, and whether you can refine the result. For sensitive images, review a service’s current privacy documentation or use an offline editor; the cited feature pages do not establish upload-retention or training-use policies.
If a website or app has a black background
Check whether the dark appearance is the site’s intended theme or comes from a browser or operating-system color preference, accessibility setting, or extension. Try the site’s own appearance control first, then inspect the relevant browser or extension settings for that site. Avoid turning off a system-wide color preference without understanding why it is enabled.

W3C’s historical F24 technique explains that some people with low vision find white text on black easier to see, and that author-defined foreground and background colors can override user-selected colors. It is a WCAG 2.0 working-draft techniques document, useful here for the accessibility issue but not a current guide to browser controls or a statement of the current conformance standard. If the entire display is black
A fully black computer display needs device-specific troubleshooting, not a background-removal tool or an unverified blanket reset. The details matter: identify the device and operating system, note whether the cursor, menus, or startup logo are visible, and recall what changed immediately beforehand. Follow the current support guidance from the device maker for that exact symptom. A detailed, reliable set of steps cannot be given without those details.

If black appears only in a video-editing preview
In the documented alpha-channel mask view for Adobe Premiere Elements, black represents transparent areas, white represents opaque areas, and gray represents partial transparency. So a black region in that specific view may indicate that the mask is revealing transparency, not that the exported video contains black pixels. Check which effect or mask view is active before changing the footage. This convention is specific to the documented Premiere Elements view; it should not be assumed to apply to every editor.
