How to Remap the Copilot Key in Windows 11: Apps, Search, and Shortcuts

Windows 11 can map the Copilot key to Search or an eligible app. For other shortcut-based actions, PowerToys may work if you identify the signal your keyboard sends.

You can change what the Copilot key does in Windows 11 through Settings > Personalization > Text input. Choose Search or, if available, select an eligible app under Customize Copilot key on keyboard. For a shortcut-based action—such as opening an app that is not listed—Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager may work, but first check which shortcut your keyboard sends.

Use Windows settings to choose Search or an eligible app

  1. Open Settings > Personalization > Text input.

  2. Find Customize Copilot key on keyboard. Depending on your Windows configuration, the choices can include Search, Custom, or an app already mapped to the key.

  3. Choose Custom and select an app from the picker. If the app you want is listed, this is the simplest option because the mapping is handled by Windows.

The picker does not promise to accept any installed program. Microsoft says an app may need to be MSIX-packaged, signed, and registered as a Microsoft Copilot hardware key provider. If an app is missing, check that it is up to date and that its provider registration is in place. Microsoft also notes that the Microsoft Copilot app may need to be reinstalled from Microsoft Store if it is missing from the picker. See Microsoft’s Windows Copilot management documentation.

Use PowerToys when you need shortcut-based behavior

PowerToys Keyboard Manager can remap keys and shortcuts, and it can launch an app through its Start App action. This is useful if you want the Copilot key to trigger a shortcut or an app-launch shortcut rather than select an app in the Windows picker. It is not a universal Copilot-key remapper: the mapping only works if your keyboard sends the signal you target.

Set up a shortcut mapping

  1. Install and open Microsoft PowerToys, then turn on Keyboard Manager.

  2. Open Keyboard Manager’s shortcut remapping controls and add a mapping for the shortcut your Copilot key emits.

Microsoft’s PowerToys Keyboard Manager documentation lists Copilot-key signal examples including Win+C and Left Shift+Windows+F23. The signal can vary by keyboard, so test your device rather than assuming one mapping will fit every model. Microsoft Q&A community answers also discuss Windows+Shift+F23 as a workaround, but report variation; treat that as community guidance, not a guaranteed signal. The Microsoft Q&A thread is one example.

What you want Best first option What it depends on
Open Search Windows setting: choose Search The Copilot-key setting is present in your Windows configuration.
Open an app shown in the Windows picker Windows setting: choose Custom, then select the app The app is available in the picker and meets Microsoft’s provider requirements.
Trigger a shortcut or launch an app not offered in the picker PowerToys Keyboard Manager Your keyboard emits a shortcut you can map, and PowerToys remains running.
Make the key behave as another key Check the Windows setting first; otherwise consider PowerToys Your Windows version exposes the relevant choice, or the keyboard’s signal can be mapped reliably.

Why you may not see the same choices

Copilot-key options depend on Windows configuration and rollout. Microsoft’s Windows management guidance documents Search and Custom app selection under Personalization > Text input. A separate Microsoft Support page describes a setting for Context menu or Right Ctrl as an update that “will ship later this year,” but the page text does not establish which current Windows builds include it. Do not assume those choices are available on every PC.

If you do see a Right Ctrl option, note Microsoft’s warning that remapping to Right Ctrl affects some RCtrl+Win and RCtrl+Shift combinations. Check the support guidance for details before choosing it.

Developer requirement for apps in the picker

For an app to appear as a Windows Custom choice, its developer must register it as a Microsoft Copilot hardware key provider. Microsoft Learn states: “If you’re a software developer, you’ll need to register your app as a Microsoft Copilot hardware key provider to allow users to remap the Copilot key to your app.” This requirement is why the Windows picker is not an unrestricted chooser for every executable.
