How to Remap Mac Keyboard Shortcuts—and Navigate Without a Mouse

macOS has built-in controls for shortcut combinations, app menu commands, modifier keys, and keyboard-only navigation. Here’s how to choose the right setting—and when a physical-key remapper is needed.

Yes—macOS can change many shortcuts without Karabiner-Elements. For a listed system shortcut or an app menu command, start at Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts. Use Modifier Keys to change what a modifier does, and Accessibility > Keyboard > Full Keyboard Access to move through interface controls without a pointer. Those built-in options do not remap every physical key to another key; for that, an advanced tool may be necessary.

First, identify what you want to change

“Remap a shortcut” can mean several different things. A shortcut normally combines a primary key with one or more modifier keys such as Command, Option, Control, or Shift. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines define it as a combination mapped to a specific command (Apple Human Interface Guidelines). Changing that command’s combination is different from making a physical key emit another key, or enabling keyboard navigation through controls.

  • Change a system command’s combination: use Keyboard Shortcuts and its relevant category.
  • Assign a combination to an app menu command: use App Shortcuts.
  • Change a modifier’s function: use Modifier Keys.
  • Move through interface controls without a pointer: enable Full Keyboard Access.
  • Make a key such as F5 or F6 act as another key: native shortcut settings may not provide that key-to-key mapping; consider an advanced remapper.

Change or disable a listed macOS shortcut

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts.
  2. Select the relevant category, such as Mission Control or Spotlight.
  3. Enable the shortcut’s checkbox if needed. Double-click its current key combination, then press the combination you want.
  4. To turn the shortcut off, clear its checkbox. To undo changes in that category, choose Restore Defaults.
  5. Quit and reopen an affected app before deciding the change did not take effect.

Apple’s support guide says, “You can change or disable keyboard shortcuts to make them easier to use” (Apple: Create keyboard shortcuts for apps). If the new combination is already assigned to another command, one assignment may need to change before it works. Check both the macOS shortcut list and the app’s menu bar for conflicts; apps and keyboard layouts can also affect which combination is available or how it behaves.

Assign a shortcut to an app menu command

Use System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > App Shortcuts when the command already appears in an app’s menu and you want to give that menu item a keyboard combination. This setting is for invoking a menu command, not for translating an arbitrary physical key into another key.

Apple Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - White
  • WIRELESS, RECHARGEABLE CONVENIENCE — Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad connects wirelessly to your Mac, iPad, or iPhone via Bluetooth. And the rechargeable internal battery means no loose batteries to replace.
  • WORKS WITH MAC, IPAD, OR IPHONE — It pairs quickly with your device so you can get to work right away.
  • ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE — Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience. Its extended layout features document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys. The numeric keypad is ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
  • GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
  • SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.

Check the app’s menu for the command’s exact wording and scope the shortcut to the appropriate app. Follow Apple’s instructions for creating the app shortcut; a mismatch between the menu-command text and the actual item can prevent the assignment from matching.

Change what a modifier key does

To make a modifier key perform a different modifier action, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Modifier Keys. Choose the keyboard, select the action for the relevant modifier, or choose No Action. Apple gives mapping Caps Lock to Control as an example for someone who prefers Control’s position on another keyboard. Use Restore Defaults to reverse the modifier mapping (Apple: Change the behavior of the modifier keys).

Navigate the interface without a mouse

For keyboard-based focus navigation, go to System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn on Full Keyboard Access. Apple’s default examples include Tab to move to the next interface element, Shift-Tab to move to the previous one, and Space to select. You can customize commands in the Full Keyboard Access settings. This changes how you navigate interface controls; it does not reassign an app’s ordinary command shortcuts.

If pressing modifier keys in sequence rather than together would help, the same Accessibility > Keyboard area includes Sticky Keys. Apple describes Full Keyboard Access and related keyboard accessibility options in its keyboard accessibility guide.

When built-in settings are not enough

Method What it changes Scope and setup Important limitation
Keyboard Shortcuts Listed system shortcut combinations and app menu commands Settings interface; a system feature or selected app Only commands exposed through the relevant settings; conflicts can prevent a combination from working
Modifier Keys What a modifier key does Settings interface; choose the keyboard and mapping Not a general physical-key-to-key remapper
Full Keyboard Access Keyboard focus and navigation through interface controls Accessibility settings Does not change normal app shortcuts or the key a physical key emits
hidutil Lower-level key mapping Command line or developer API Apple’s archived note says the documented mapping is lost on restart or when the last keyboard service disconnects
Karabiner-Elements Simple key changes, complex rules, function-key changes, device-specific modifications, and profiles Third-party utility; rules can target selected devices Some keys cannot be changed because of macOS API or keyboard hardware behavior; compatibility varies

Apple Technical Note TN2450 documents hidutil and the IOHIDEventSystemClient API as remapping approaches. It is an archived 2017 developer note for macOS Sierra 10.12, not a guarantee that its exact instructions apply unchanged to every current macOS release. Its documented mapping depends on an active keyboard service and does not persist across a restart or disconnection of the last keyboard (Apple Technical Note TN2450).

Karabiner-Elements documents simple remaps, complex rules, function-key modifications, device-specific rules, and profiles. Examples include changing Caps Lock to Escape or making a modifier-plus-key combination produce another key. Its documentation also notes that some remaps are blocked by macOS API behavior or keyboard hardware. Check the utility’s current macOS compatibility and the support for your particular keyboard before relying on a rule (Karabiner-Elements documentation).

Troubleshoot a shortcut that does not work

  1. Match the setting to the job. Decide whether you need a command shortcut, modifier change, keyboard-only navigation, or physical-key remap.
  2. Look for a conflict. Check the target app’s menu and the relevant macOS shortcut category. Change or disable the competing assignment.
  3. Reopen the app. Quit and relaunch it after editing a shortcut.
  4. Check layout and app behavior. Confirm the active keyboard/input layout and inspect the app’s menu for the shortcut it currently recognizes.
  5. Escalate only if required. If the built-in control cannot express the mapping, check advanced-tool support for your macOS version and keyboard model; for the documented TN2450 mapping, account for its restart and keyboard-disconnection persistence limits.
