In AutoHotkey v2, write a mapping as OriginKey::DestinationKey, save it in an .ahk script, and run the script. For example, CapsLock::Ctrl makes Caps Lock act as Ctrl while the script is active. A one-way mapping changes only the source key; to swap two keys, define both directions.
Make a basic key remap
These examples use AutoHotkey v2. Add a version requirement at the top of the script so the intended major version is clear:

CapsLock::CtrlSave the text as a plain-text file with an .ahk extension, then run it with AutoHotkey. The mapping is active while that script is running. For installation and launcher steps, consult the official AutoHotkey site; the available remapping reference does not establish current setup details.

The syntax is OriginKey::DestinationKey: the key on the left behaves as the key on the right. For example, a::b makes A act as B. The destination key keeps its original behavior, so this is not a two-way swap. Lowercase letter names let Shift and Caps Lock continue to determine letter case normally. Swap two keys
To make A act as B and B act as A, define both mappings:
a::b
b::aLeaving out either line makes the remap one-way, not a swap.

Limit a remap to one application
Use #HotIf to make a mapping conditional on the active window. This example targets a window whose class is Notepad:

#HotIfThe final bare #HotIf restores the default context for following hotkeys. Replace the window condition with an identifier appropriate to your target application; do not assume every program uses the same class or executable name. The reference documents this conditional-remap pattern.

What happens while a remap is active
- The running script provides the remapping. Exiting it stops its mappings; after editing, reload or restart the script as appropriate for your installed version.
- Held modifiers carry through: with
b::a, pressing Ctrl+B behaves as Ctrl+A. - The destination is held while you hold the source, and remapped keys normally repeat when held.
- Compatibility is not universal. Some games and applications may handle remaps differently because AutoHotkey implements remappings through pairs of hotkeys, with hook-hotkey and input-mode caveats.
When a remap does not work
Check the simple causes first, while keeping in mind that no check guarantees compatibility with every program:
- Confirm the script is running.
- Check that the script syntax and key names match the installed AutoHotkey major version.
- Consider whether the target program intercepts keyboard input unusually, as can happen in some games or applications.
PowerToys Keyboard Manager as a graphical alternative
If you would rather configure mappings through a graphical interface, Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager can remap keys, shortcuts, and text. Add a mapping row, choose the input and output, and apply it. Microsoft says changes should take effect immediately, but PowerToys must remain running in the background. Disable the mappings in its settings or close PowerToys to stop them. See Microsoft’s Keyboard Manager documentation.

These tools have separate limitations; PowerToys-specific restrictions should not be assumed to apply to AutoHotkey.

PowerToys limitations Microsoft documents
- Win+L and Ctrl+Alt+Del are reserved, and Fn cannot be remapped in most cases.
- Mappings are unavailable at the login screen.
- Elevated applications may require PowerToys to run elevated as well.
- Games and certain keyboard APIs may not work well with remappings.
- Keyboard Manager cannot assign different mappings to different connected keyboards.
- Some shortcut changes depend on the order in which keys are pressed.
