How to Remap a Robot Vacuum After Rearranging a Room

A mapping run or whole-home clean can help your robot vacuum explore a rearranged room, but the right reset depends on its brand and model.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After moving furniture, run your robot vacuum’s mapping mode or a whole-home clean so it can explore the changed layout. If its saved map still causes problems, use the reset or remapping steps for your exact model—there is no universal map-reset path. Before starting, open doors to the areas you want mapped, clear floor obstacles, and leave the robot and dock undisturbed until the mission finishes.

Does rearranging a room mean you need to remap?

Not always. Some robots can adjust their map during a full-home run, while others need a dedicated mapping run or a deleted map before they can build a replacement. A targeted room or zone clean may not explore a changed area or discover space missing from the saved map. iRobot specifically recommends a mapping run or a Clean Everywhere mission after furniture rearrangement or renovations because directed cleaning does not actively search for new space.

Start with a mapping run or whole-home clean if your robot offers one. If the resulting map is still inaccurate, check the instructions for your robot’s manufacturer and model before deleting anything: deletion requirements, map capacity, and dock behavior differ.

Prepare the room and robot

  • Open the doors to every room you want included in the map. The robot cannot map an area it cannot enter.
  • Clear the floor of loose cords and other obstacles that could block or interrupt its route.
  • Provide adequate light if your model uses a camera or visual landmarks. iRobot says lighting helps its vSLAM system identify landmarks such as windows, picture frames, ceiling fans, and lights.
  • Keep the dock in its established position unless your model’s instructions say otherwise. Some robots use it as a navigation reference or require a successful return to save the map.
  • Do not pick up, guide, or interrupt the robot during the mapping mission. Let it finish and return as its model requires.

Run a mapping mission

  1. Identify the brand and model. Find the mapping or remapping instructions in that manufacturer’s app or support pages; menu labels and reset requirements are not universal.
  2. Choose a full-area mapping option. Select the app’s mapping run, quick mapping, or whole-home clean. If there is no dedicated mapping mode, follow the manufacturer’s full-home cleaning procedure. Do not choose only the rearranged room if the robot needs to explore beyond its current map.
  3. Let the mission complete. Leave the robot and dock alone while it explores. A map may not be saved or usable until the robot finishes successfully, and some models require it to return to the dock.
  4. Review the map. Check whether the changed layout and intended rooms appear correctly. Edit room dividers or labels if your app supports it, and back up the map if the manufacturer offers that option.

How the steps differ by brand

Brand or models What to try Important distinction
iRobot / Roomba with Smart Maps In the app, tap the Map icon, choose “+ Create a new Smart Map,” then start the mapping run. iRobot says a mapping run navigates without cleaning and that one complete run is enough to begin customizing a new Smart Map. A Clean Everywhere mission is another option after furniture changes. For some Smart Map models, iRobot says a previous map can be restored from a Clean Map report; if that does not work, its guidance suggests deleting the map and starting a new one. The general guide says Smart Map-enabled robots can store 10 maps, but compatibility varies by model.
iRobot Roomba i3, i4, and i5 For a layout change, delete the saved map and start a new mapping run, following the model’s support instructions. iRobot says these models do not update the map while cleaning and support one Smart Map. Its model-specific guidance also says to delete the map and remap if the charging dock has moved. Do not assume this applies to every iRobot.
Roborock Check your model and firmware instructions in the app. The cited S7 example for creating a first saved map uses map-saving mode, starts from the dock, requires doors open to intended rooms, and calls for a successful return to the unmoved dock. Roborock’s cited multi-floor instructions allow additional floor maps without carrying the dock upstairs on supported models; this is not a general instruction to move the dock after rearranging furniture. For a map shown at the wrong angle, its support page advises at least 0.5 m clearance on both sides of the dock and 1.5 m in front, and suggests switching Map Saving off and back on so the next cleanup creates a map. Procedures and supported map counts vary by model and firmware.
ECOVACS In the ECOVACS HOME app, open Mapping and start Quick Mapping. ECOVACS also says a robot can map while working. The guide, updated 2025-09-19, advises opening doors, clearing floor obstacles, and ensuring sufficient light. It also says not to move the robot during mapping, to back up an edited map manually, and not to relocate the dock after mapping because this can cause positioning errors or failed automatic returns. A separate FAQ’s limit of two permanent maps plus one new-environment map applies only to covered multi-floor devices; saving may require replacing an existing map.

If the new map is still wrong

  • Check for inaccessible areas. Confirm that the doors to the intended rooms were open and that obstacles did not block the robot’s route.
  • Check whether the mission completed. If the robot was interrupted or did not return as required, repeat the manufacturer’s mapping procedure without moving it or the dock mid-run.
  • Use the model-specific repair option. Depending on the app and model, the right next step may be editing, restoring a previous map, or deleting the saved map and remapping. Do not delete a map until you have checked whether it can be restored or backed up.
  • Confirm dock guidance and app requirements. Dock positioning and map-saving behavior vary, as can instructions across model and firmware versions. Follow the support page for your exact robot.
