Release the locking pliers safely
- Secure the workpiece. Before opening the jaws, make sure the item being held cannot drop, shift, or spring away. Keep fingers out of the jaws and away from the handles’ closing path.
- Locate the release lever. It is built into a handle. On the IRWIN VISE-GRIP 10WR described in a Manuals.plus-hosted manual, it is on the lower handle; other brands and designs can differ.
- Press the lever as designed. The 10WR manual describes pushing the lever to release the pliers, after which the jaws spring open. Use the direction indicated by your tool’s design rather than assuming every model is identical.
If the lever moves and the jaws open normally, remove the tool from the workpiece. Do not put a hand between the jaws while they are opening.

If the release lever will not move
The adjustment screw at the end of the handle sets jaw opening and clamping pressure. If the release lever resists, turn that screw counterclockwise a small amount to ease the tension, then try the lever again with your hands clear of the jaws.
This is a cautious troubleshooting inference from the adjustment screw’s documented role, not a stuck-tool procedure verified by the cited manuals or a fix established for every locking-plier design. Make only a small adjustment at a time. If loosening the screw does not make the lever operable, stop instead of applying more force.

- Do not keep using pliers with damaged or worn parts. A WORKPRO instruction page hosted by Manuals.plus warns against using damaged or worn pliers.
- Do not treat buying another pair as the first fix for a normal operating problem. Replacement is a fallback when the tool is damaged or cannot be used safely.
Why the instructions vary by model
The available manuals describe ordinary release operation and the adjustment controls, but they do not establish one manufacturer-approved procedure for every stuck locking-plier design. The IRWIN 10WR manual hosted by Manuals.plus describes its lower-handle lever and spring-opening jaws; the WORKPRO instructions describe similar lever and adjustment-bolt controls. Because these copies are hosted by a third party and designs differ, check the instructions for your exact model if the basic release and cautious screw adjustment do not work.
