It can repair a stale or invalid lease, but the server may assign the same address. It normally does not change the public IP address that your internet provider assigns to your router.
Before you release a lease
DHCP supplies a device with a time-limited IPv4 address, subnet mask, default gateway, and often DNS servers. Home routers commonly issue private addresses such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x. Release/renew is intended for an adapter set to obtain its address automatically.
- The adapter will disconnect temporarily between release and renewal. Avoid doing this during an important remote session unless another connection is available.
- A deliberately configured static address is not renewed through DHCP. Check the existing settings before changing them.
- On a work, school, hotel, or enterprise network, local policy may restrict DHCP behavior.
Release and renew an IP address on Windows 10 or 11
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
- Record the current configuration, if useful:
ipconfig /all - Release DHCP configuration:
ipconfig /release - Request configuration again:
ipconfig /renew - Verify the result:
ipconfig
Microsoft documents /release as sending a DHCPRELEASE message and discarding the adapter’s DHCP configuration; /renew requests DHCP configuration again. These options apply to adapters configured to obtain an address automatically (Microsoft’s ipconfig reference).
Target one adapter
If the computer has several adapters, run ipconfig and use the displayed adapter name. For example:

ipconfig /release "Wi-Fi"
ipconfig /renew "Wi-Fi"
Use quotation marks when the adapter name contains spaces. Names may be Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or a virtual/VPN adapter; select the physical connection you are troubleshooting.
IPv6 configuration
Where DHCPv6 is used, Windows also supports:
ipconfig /release6
ipconfig /renew6
These commands apply only to DHCPv6 configuration. They do not replace IPv6 router advertisements or guarantee a new globally routable IPv6 address.
Interpret the result
A successful result normally includes an IPv4 address appropriate for the local network, a subnet mask, a default gateway, and (if supplied) DNS servers. An address beginning 169.254 is an Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address: Windows did not obtain a usable DHCP lease, so investigate the router, connection, or adapter rather than treating renewal as successful.
Renew a DHCP lease on macOS
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Network in the sidebar, then choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Click Details, select TCP/IP, and click Renew DHCP Lease.
- Click OK.
This is Apple’s current path (Apple Mac User Guide). The control is available when the service uses DHCP. macOS also supports DHCP with a manually specified address and fully manual IPv4 settings; those are not ordinary DHCP leases (Apple TCP/IP settings).

Older macOS releases use System Preferences rather than System Settings, so their labels and path differ. Return to the TCP/IP panel to check the IPv4 address, subnet mask, router, and DHCP status. If renewal fails, check the router, test another network, and review VPN or security software; Apple lists these among possible causes of Mac connectivity problems (Apple connectivity guidance).

Release and renew on Linux
Linux has no single universal DHCP command. The correct procedure depends on whether the machine uses NetworkManager, systemd-networkd, dhcpcd, ISC DHCP, or a distribution-specific graphical tool.
NetworkManager
List devices and saved connections:
nmcli device status
nmcli connection show
Replace the connection name below with the exact name shown, then reconnect it:
sudo nmcli connection down "<connection-name>"
sudo nmcli connection up "<connection-name>"
This deactivates and reactivates the NetworkManager connection so it can negotiate configuration again; it does not guarantee a different address. NetworkManager documents nmcli as its command-line tool for reporting and controlling devices and connections (NetworkManager nmcli documentation).

Why dhclient is not universal
Commands such as sudo dhclient -r followed by sudo dhclient may work on systems using the ISC DHCP client, but many current installations do not have it installed or delegate DHCP to NetworkManager or another service. Use the commands appropriate to the service managing your interface.

Does this change your public IP address?
| Goal | Will computer release/renew help? | What it actually does |
|---|---|---|
| Repair a stale local DHCP configuration | Often | Requests local network settings again. |
| Get a different private IP | Sometimes | The DHCP server may return the same address. |
| Change the router’s public IPv4 address | Usually no | The computer is not renewing the ISP’s WAN lease. |
| Hide identity from websites | No | This is not an anonymity or privacy tool. |
| Fix DNS resolution only | Not necessarily | Test DNS separately; Windows can flush its resolver cache. |
| Fix a static-IP error | No | Correct the static settings or switch to DHCP when appropriate. |
If every device is offline, check the modem and router’s power and WAN status, look for an ISP outage, and follow the provider’s restart procedure. A computer-side renewal normally affects only that computer’s lease from the router; it does not control the ISP-assigned public address. Frontier’s support instructions describe release/renew as a local connection troubleshooting step (Frontier support).

When release and renew does not work
- Check whether another device can connect. If none can, investigate the router, modem, or ISP instead of repeating commands.
- Confirm Wi-Fi signal, Ethernet cabling, adapter status, and router power.
- Run
ipconfig /allon Windows or inspect the equivalent Linux/macOS settings to confirm DHCP is enabled and that you targeted the physical adapter. - Reconnect to Wi-Fi or restart the adapter, then try once more.
- Temporarily review VPN, firewall, proxy, or security software that may block network traffic.
- Restart networking equipment according to the router or ISP instructions.
- On Windows, Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting sequence is:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
These are separate operations: Winsock reset changes the socket catalog, TCP/IP reset changes network-stack settings, and /flushdns clears the DNS resolver cache; flushing DNS does not renew an IP address (Microsoft Ethernet troubleshooting). Restart Windows afterward if prompted or connectivity remains broken.
Common errors
“No adapter is in the state permissible”
The adapter may be disabled, disconnected, statically configured, or incorrectly targeted. Run ipconfig /all, reconnect the physical adapter, confirm automatic addressing, and retry. Windows makes /renew available only for adapters configured to obtain an address automatically.
/renew hangs or reports a DHCP error
Check the router, cable or Wi-Fi range, DHCP-server availability and address-pool capacity, MAC filtering or enterprise access controls, and VPN or firewall interference. If all devices fail, stop troubleshooting the computer and escalate the network problem.
The address does not change
That is normal. Renewal renegotiates configuration; the server decides which address to offer and may recognize the previous lease.
You use a static address
Do not release/renew a deliberately static configuration. Record its settings and follow your administrator’s procedure, or switch the adapter to automatic addressing only when DHCP is intended.

Key distinction
Release/renew is a targeted fix for a device’s local DHCP configuration. It is worth trying for stale or invalid local settings, but it cannot repair an ISP outage, failed hardware, broken cabling, a captive-portal login, or every DNS, VPN, firewall, and proxy problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will renewing give me a new IP address?
Not necessarily. The DHCP server may renew the existing private address.
Is release/renew safe?
It is generally safe, but it briefly disconnects the adapter and can interrupt a remote session.
Why do I see 169.254.x.x on Windows?
That APIPA address indicates Windows did not obtain a usable DHCP lease.
Can I renew a static IP?
No. DHCP renewal applies to automatic addressing; static settings must be corrected or intentionally changed to DHCP.
Should I flush DNS too?
Only for a DNS-cache problem. ipconfig /flushdns clears cached DNS records and does not renew an IP address.
