How to Reinstall Ubuntu on Your VPS Safely

Reinstalling Ubuntu on a VPS usually means a destructive provider-side rebuild. This guide shows how to inventory and back up the server, choose rebuild or replacement, follow DigitalOcean and Hetzner workflows, bootstrap a clean system, restore applications, validate cutover, and decide when an in-place Ubuntu upgrade is safer.

To reinstall Ubuntu on a VPS, use the hosting provider’s control panel to Rebuild, Reinstall, or Restore base image, select the Ubuntu image, and confirm the destructive operation. This replaces the server’s system disk. Export databases, copy required files, verify a readable backup, and record access details before you click the final confirmation; without a backup, the original data may be unrecoverable.

What a VPS reinstall actually does

A VPS reinstall is normally performed by the provider’s control plane, not by a command inside the running Ubuntu installation. The provider writes a selected operating-system image to the virtual disk and removes the existing system. Depending on the host, the control may be labelled Rebuild, Reinstall, Restore base image, or may be implemented by deleting the old server and creating a replacement.

This is appropriate when the installation is badly misconfigured, compromised, cluttered with software you no longer trust, or you need a known-clean starting point. It is not the right first step when you only need a newer Ubuntu release; an in-place release upgrade can preserve the existing system and application configuration.

Decide whether reinstalling is necessary

Use a reinstall when you need a clean system

  • The boot process or package system is damaged and cannot be repaired reliably.
  • You want to remove unknown services, abandoned packages, or configuration changes accumulated over time.
  • You suspect compromise and need a fresh operating-system image before restoring verified application data.
  • You are moving an application to a new baseline and can rebuild its configuration from documented settings.

Use an in-place upgrade when the goal is a newer Ubuntu release

Canonical documents sudo do-release-upgrade for Ubuntu Server and cloud images. Back up first, and follow Ubuntu’s supported sequential LTS path rather than skipping directly across multiple LTS releases. An upgrade keeps more of the existing configuration, so it is less disruptive, but it can also preserve the package conflicts or hard-to-trace changes that motivated you to consider a reinstall.

  • PLATFORM BOUNDARY - Not designed to boot Apple Silicon or other ARM-based computers. Confirm CPU architecture and USB-boot support before purchase.
  • BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
  • BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.

Inventory the VPS before touching the control panel

Make a written inventory that another administrator could use to reproduce the server. Keep it outside the VPS you are about to erase.

  • Ubuntu release and architecture.
  • Public and private IP addresses, network interfaces, and reverse-DNS settings.
  • DNS records, including records for websites, APIs, mail, and internal services.
  • Attached block volumes, mounts, object-storage buckets, and any provider-managed databases.
  • User accounts, sudo permissions, SSH public keys, and the location of the corresponding private keys.
  • Firewall rules at both the provider layer and inside Ubuntu.
  • Cron entries, timers, systemd units, startup scripts, and scheduled deployment jobs.
  • Installed packages and language runtimes required by the application.
  • Web-server virtual hosts, proxy rules, application configuration, environment files, and service ports.
  • Database engines, database names, users, extensions, replication settings, and connection strings.
  • TLS certificates, renewal configuration, private keys, and the account used by the certificate authority.
  • Application secrets, API credentials, encryption keys, webhook signing secrets, and monitoring tokens.
  • Backup schedules, retention settings, alert destinations, and resource limits.

Also record the hostname and time zone, the provider’s console URL and recovery credentials, and how you will test the application after restoration. Screenshots can help with provider settings, but export machine-readable copies of configuration wherever possible.

Back up data and prove that the backup is usable

Stop writes before exporting

Put the application into maintenance mode or otherwise stop traffic that can change data. Stop workers that write to queues or files, pause scheduled jobs, and ensure that no deployment is modifying the filesystem while you copy it.

Export databases consistently

Use the database engine’s consistent-dump method rather than copying live database files. Save the dump with its schema, roles, extensions, and a note describing the database version. If the application stores uploads or generated files outside the database, include those directories separately.

Copy files and configuration

Copy application data and the relevant parts of /etc to storage that will remain available after the reinstall. The documented recovery workflows for VPS providers use tools such as scp and rsync. Preserve ownership, permissions, symbolic links, and timestamps where they matter, but do not blindly restore every old system file onto the clean installation.

Keep at least one copy away from the VPS. Enable the provider’s backup service or take a provider snapshot when available, and retain an independent local or remote copy. Open the backup from another machine, inspect representative files, and perform a test database restore when the data is important. A backup that was never read is only an assumption.

DigitalOcean’s 2026 documentation states: “If you have no backups, snapshots, or local copies of the data on your Droplet and you rebuild it, that data is completely irretrievable by DigitalOcean.” Treat the rebuild confirmation as permanent deletion of the old disk.

Choose rebuild or a replacement server

Decision factor Rebuild the existing VPS Create a replacement VPS
Data-loss exposure High if backups are incomplete; the current disk is overwritten. The original server can remain available while you restore and test, provided you do not delete it.
IP address DigitalOcean documents that rebuilding a Droplet retains its IP address; confirm the behavior for your provider and attached addresses. A replacement normally receives different networking details; verify whether reserved addresses can be moved.
Rollback path Rollback depends on a snapshot or a verified external backup. You can keep the old VPS as a fallback until cutover, subject to its ongoing charges and provider limits.
Downtime There is no service while the disk is rebuilt and the application is bootstrapped. The old service can continue while the new one is prepared, followed by a planned DNS or IP switch.
Pre-cutover testing Testing occurs on the same resource after the old system has been removed. You can test privately by IP, a temporary hostname, or an overridden hosts entry before changing public DNS.
Console and recovery Existing provider-console access usually remains tied to the VPS. You must configure console access, keys, firewall rules, and monitoring for the new resource.
Snapshots and backups Use a snapshot or backup made before the rebuild; availability and retention are provider-specific. You can retain the old server’s snapshot and backup set while establishing new schedules.
Ongoing cost Usually avoids running two servers, but the old disk contents are sacrificed. Costs both resources while you test and migrate; delete the old VPS only after verification.

Rebuild is efficient when the IP and resource identity must stay in place and your backups are proven. A replacement is safer for a critical service because it creates a testable migration and a straightforward fallback.

Record access details and prepare for a new SSH fingerprint

Keep the provider console session, recovery credentials, SSH private key, and a second administrative path available before starting. Do not rely on the only SSH session to the machine being erased.

A rebuilt system generates a new SSH host key. DigitalOcean describes this as a new fingerprint. Your SSH client may warn that the key for the server has changed; remove the old entry for that address from your local known_hosts only after you have confirmed through the provider console that the rebuild really occurred, then accept the newly displayed fingerprint.

Provider procedures

DigitalOcean Droplet

  1. Open the Droplet in the control panel.
  2. Choose Settings → Rebuild, or use Actions → Restore base image where that option is shown.
  3. Select the required Ubuntu image.
  4. Read the data-loss warning, type the Droplet name as confirmation, and start the operation.
  5. Wait for the control panel to report completion before attempting the first login.

DigitalOcean documents that a rebuild replaces the Droplet disk and retains the Droplet’s IP address. That does not preserve files on the disk; only data included in a surviving snapshot, backup, attached volume, or external copy can be restored.

Hetzner server

Hetzner documents two clean paths: use the server’s Rebuild operation, or create a new server and migrate the application. If the existing operating system will not boot, enable the Rescue System first. Rescue exposes the disk so you can mount the root partition and copy files with scp or rsync before reinstalling.

Bootstrap the clean Ubuntu installation

After the provider reports a successful rebuild, work through this order. Use the provider-supplied user and SSH key rather than enabling password login for convenience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the image and network. Log in through SSH or the provider console, verify the Ubuntu release, check the hostname, and confirm that the expected public and private interfaces are present.
  2. Update the base packages. Refresh package metadata and install security updates before adding application software. Reboot if the update process requires it, then reconnect using the new host key.
  3. Create a named administrator. Add a non-root user, grant only the required sudo access, install its SSH public key, and test a second login before closing the original session.
  4. Harden SSH. Confirm key authentication works for the administrative user, disable direct root access where your recovery process permits, and avoid disabling the only working access path until the replacement has been tested.
  5. Configure the firewall. Allow SSH from the management networks you actually use, then open only the web, mail, database, or application ports that the service requires. Align host rules with the provider’s network firewall.
  6. Set identity and time. Apply the intended hostname and time zone, and verify clock synchronization because certificate renewal, logs, and scheduled jobs depend on correct time.
  7. Install only required services. Add the web server, runtime, database, queue, monitoring agent, and other components from your inventory. Avoid copying unknown binaries or obsolete repositories from the erased installation.
  8. Restore configuration deliberately. Recreate service accounts and directories, then copy reviewed application configuration, certificates, and secrets from the backup. Set ownership and permissions to the least privilege needed by each service.
  9. Restore databases and files. Create the database roles and empty databases, import the verified dump, then restore uploads and other persistent files. Check that application connection strings refer to the new hostnames, ports, and credentials.
  10. Recreate automation. Add systemd units, timers, cron jobs, deployment hooks, log rotation, monitoring checks, and backup schedules only after the application works manually.

Validate the restored service before cutover

Do not remove the old server or repoint public DNS immediately. Test from an administrative network and from an ordinary external connection.

  • SSH key login for each required administrator, including the documented recovery path.
  • HTTP and HTTPS endpoints, redirects, virtual hosts, static assets, and API authentication.
  • TLS certificate validity, private-key permissions, and automated renewal.
  • Database integrity, migrations, indexes, user permissions, and representative read/write transactions.
  • Background workers, queues, scheduled jobs, notifications, and outbound mail.
  • Uploads, downloads, file ownership, and any attached-volume mounts.
  • Firewall behavior: required ports reachable, unintended ports blocked.
  • Monitoring alerts, log collection, disk-space alerts, and backup completion.
  • DNS resolution, reverse DNS where relevant, and application behavior when the old host is unavailable.
  • CPU, memory, storage, process, and connection limits under a realistic workload.

Keep a written record of every failed check and its fix. Switch DNS or move a reserved address only after the clean system passes the checklist and you know how to reverse the change. DNS caches can continue directing some users to the old address for a period determined by the records’ TTL, so keep the old service available until traffic has demonstrably moved.

Reinstall versus in-place Ubuntu release upgrade

Consideration Reinstall In-place release upgrade
Resulting system Starts from the selected Ubuntu image and removes the old root filesystem. Updates the existing installation and retains much of its configuration and package history.
Configuration preservation Nothing on the erased disk is preserved unless separately backed up and restored. Existing users, services, and settings generally remain, although incompatible changes may require manual intervention.
Downtime Includes image deployment, bootstrap, data restoration, and validation. Includes the upgrade process and any required reboot or service repair.
Application compatibility You must reinstall runtimes and prove that the application works on the clean image. Applications remain in place but may encounter changed libraries, repositories, or service defaults.
Rollback complexity Requires a snapshot, backup restore, or the old server; there is no automatic undo of an overwritten disk. Rollback depends on provider snapshots and the upgrade path; downgrading packages is not a general undo mechanism.
Best fit Compromise recovery, severe configuration drift, or a deliberately clean rebuild. A supported move to a newer Ubuntu release when the current installation is healthy and documented.

Select an Ubuntu release with support duration in mind

Canonical recommends an Ubuntu Long Term Support release for servers because it receives five years of standard support and security updates. Interim releases are supported for nine months. Check the release and image availability shown by your provider on the day you rebuild; provider catalogs can lag or omit particular images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an existing LTS installation, plan sequential upgrades rather than jumping across several LTS versions in one operation. For a clean rebuild, choose the LTS image that your application, provider, and operational tooling support, then document that choice for the next maintenance cycle.

Understand downtime and provider-specific billing

A rebuild’s downtime is not limited to the image-writing phase. Service remains unavailable while you install packages, restore data, issue certificates, and complete testing. A replacement server can shorten the public outage by allowing this work before the DNS or address cutover, but running both resources increases cost until migration is complete.

DigitalOcean’s 2026 documentation describes 672 hours (28 days) as the bundled-plan monthly charging threshold for eligible Droplets. That figure is specific to the applicable DigitalOcean plan and must not be generalized to every VPS provider or product. Check the current billing terms for your own resource, snapshots, attached volumes, backups, and replacement server.

Troubleshooting common reinstall problems

The rebuild button is unavailable

Check whether the server is powered off, locked by another operation, or attached to a resource that prevents image changes. Use the provider’s console or support documentation to identify the state, and do not delete the VPS until your backup is verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SSH reports a changed host key

Expect a new fingerprint after a rebuild. Verify the rebuild through the provider console, remove only the old key for that address from your local known-hosts file, and reconnect with the provider-supplied credentials.

The server boots but the application is unreachable

Check the service status and logs, listening ports, host firewall, provider firewall, DNS records, and certificate configuration in that order. Confirm that the application is bound to the intended interface and that restored secrets and database credentials match.

A database restore fails

Confirm that the destination database version and required extensions are installed, create roles before importing objects that reference them, and inspect the dump for errors instead of assuming a successful command restored every table. Restore into a separate test database when you need to preserve the original backup for another attempt.

The old server is still receiving traffic

Check authoritative DNS and resolver caches, then compare access logs on both servers. Keep the old instance isolated from writes or place it in read-only mode so users cannot create divergent data while caches expire.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision

Reinstall only after you can account for the data, access methods, network settings, and application dependencies that must survive. Rebuild the existing VPS when retaining its resource identity and IP is important and your backups are proven; create a replacement when testing and rollback matter more than a single-server cutover. If the only objective is a supported Ubuntu version change on a healthy server, use Canonical’s documented release-upgrade path instead of erasing a working installation.
