To reinstall an optional feature in Windows 11, you remove it from Settings if it is still installed, then add it back from the available-features list. This is a single-component task. It does not require reinstalling Windows, and it does not use Reset this PC. The exact route depends on the feature, because Windows 11 lists optional features on two different Settings pages.
Confirm you need an optional feature, not a Windows reinstall
Optional features are separate Windows components, such as a media codec pack or a legacy player, that Windows can install or remove without touching your files or apps. If one component is missing or broken, the fix is to re-add that component. A Windows reinstall or Reset this PC replaces the whole operating system and is far more disruptive. Use the steps below first.

Two Settings pages, and why they differ
Windows 11 shows optional features in two places:
- Settings > System > Optional features is where the add-on route appears for some components, including Windows Media Player Legacy and Sysmon.
- Settings > Apps > Optional features is a separate page. Microsoft documents the Media Feature Pack for Windows 11 N under this route.
If the path you were given does not match what you see, check the feature name against the Microsoft instructions for that specific component and use the page that instructions name.

Remove and re-add an installed feature
Reinstalling usually means removing the existing copy first. Microsoft documents the installed-features list at Settings > Apps > Optional features, but the exact removal behavior depends on the component, so follow what Settings shows for that item.
- Open Settings and select Apps, then select Optional features.
- In the installed-features list, find the component and use the removal action Settings offers for it.
- Wait for the removal to finish, then return to Settings > System > Optional features > View features.
- Find the same component in the available list and add it again if Windows offers it.
If the component does not appear in the available list after removal, go to the troubleshooting section below rather than repeating the removal.

Feature-specific routes and requirements
The three components Microsoft documents most clearly differ in where they sit and what they require. The table below compares them by Settings route, edition requirement, and driver follow-up.
| Feature | Settings route documented | Edition requirement | Driver follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sysmon | Settings > System > Optional features > View features (Microsoft March 2026 Windows 11 update guidance) | Not stated in the reviewed Microsoft guidance | Not stated in the reviewed Microsoft guidance |
| Windows Media Player Legacy | Settings > System > Optional features > View features (Microsoft Support) | Not stated in the reviewed Microsoft guidance | Not stated in the reviewed Microsoft guidance |
| Media Feature Pack | Settings > Apps > Optional features > View features (Microsoft Support, Media Feature Pack list for Windows N editions) | Windows 11 N only | Some features require reinstalling hardware drivers after the pack is installed |
Media Feature Pack on Windows 11 N
The Media Feature Pack is intended for Windows 11 N editions, which ship without certain media technologies. Before you start, confirm your edition at Settings > System > About. If your edition is not an N edition, this pack is not the component you need.

Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack list for Windows N editions states: “Some features require reinstalling hardware drivers after the Media Feature Pack is installed.” If a media feature still misbehaves after installation, reinstall the affected hardware driver, such as a camera or audio driver, from the device maker or Device Manager.
Windows Media Player Legacy
Windows Media Player Legacy is documented under Settings > System > Optional features > View features. Microsoft’s documentation does not state an edition restriction or a driver follow-up for this component in the material reviewed, so use the Settings listing as the authoritative indicator of whether it is offered on your PC.

Feature states and download sizes
Microsoft’s storage guidance describes three states an optional feature can be in:
Best Value

- Installed: the feature is on the PC and appears in the installed-features list.
- Available on demand: Windows can add the feature when you choose it.
- Manually installed: the feature was added by hand and is listed as such.
Microsoft Support gives a size range of less than 1 MB to almost 2 GB for optional features. The source page does not state a publication year, so the range should be read as an approximate guide, not a figure for any particular feature or build.
When the feature does not appear
Microsoft’s reviewed guidance does not describe a single cause for a missing item in the available list. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the exact feature name against the Microsoft instructions for that component, since names differ between pages.
- Confirm your Windows 11 edition at Settings > System > About. The Media Feature Pack is limited to N editions.
- Confirm your current build at Settings > System > About (Windows specifications). Some items depend on the build.
- If the PC is managed by an organization, ask your administrator. Admin policy can hide or block optional features.
How this differs from Reset this PC
Reset this PC is a Windows recovery option. It reinstalls Windows and can remove apps and settings, depending on the option you choose. Reinstalling one optional component never needs it. Use Reset this PC only when Windows itself is damaged, and treat it as a separate recovery task with its own backup and data-loss considerations.
