How to Reinstall a 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server Without Losing Your World

Safely reinstall a 7 Days to Die dedicated server: back up the complete Saves tree, Mods, and custom XML, use SteamCMD app 294420, restore data, match client builds, and verify connectivity.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can reinstall a 7 Days to Die dedicated server without losing the world, player data, mods, or settings—but only if you back up those items before removing the installation. Stop the server cleanly, copy the complete save and mod data somewhere outside the server directory, preserve your custom configuration, reinstall or validate the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD, then restore the data and match the client and server builds.

This procedure applies to a self-hosted Windows or Linux server and can be adapted to a managed host. The key distinction is between disposable program files and irreplaceable game data: reinstall the former only after securing the latter.

What a reinstall changes—and what it should not change

A server reinstall replaces downloaded executables and supporting files. It does not need to erase your world. Your persistent data normally lives in the server’s Saves hierarchy, while modifications and administration settings are stored separately. Deleting the installation directory before copying those locations is what causes the usual loss.

Prepare the outage and inventory

Stop the server cleanly

Tell players when the server will be unavailable, then use the normal console command, service control, or hosting-panel stop button. Do not kill the process while it is saving. Wait until the process has exited and no server process is still writing to disk. A clean stop reduces the chance of a partial world database or a rollback to an older state.

Record paths and settings before changing anything

Write down the current installation directory, the location of Saves, the location of Mods, the branch (stable or experimental), the server’s custom XML filename, the service account, and the ports used for gameplay and any web or control interface. Also save the exact launch script, scheduled task, systemd unit, container definition, or panel startup settings. These notes let you recreate the service after the files are replaced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a list of every installed mod and identify whether it is loaded from the server’s Mods directory or supplied by a panel. Record administrator lists, permission files, whitelist or blacklist files, and any scripts that generate or copy configuration at startup.

Back up the world, mods, and configuration

Back up before running a delete, reinstall, or panel “reinstall” action. Use storage that is outside the server installation directory—an external drive, a different disk, or a remote backup location. A backup inside the directory you plan to remove is not a backup.

Copy complete directories, not selected files

Data to preserve What to copy Why it matters
World and player data The entire Saves/<world>/<game> tree, including every file and subdirectory World chunks, player identities, inventories, progression, and generated data may be distributed across multiple files.
Mods The complete Mods directory Removing or changing a mod can make a save fail to load or behave differently.
Server configuration Your custom serverconfig XML and the shipped configuration you used as a reference Difficulty, world generation, limits, passwords, and other tuned values are not recreated automatically.
Administration Admin lists, permissions, whitelist or blacklist files, and related JSON or XML files Otherwise, operators may lose privileges when the new installation starts.
Operations Launch scripts, service definitions, scheduled tasks, container files, and panel settings The files may be reinstalled while the service wiring remains absent.

Verify the backup before deleting anything

  1. Compare the number of files and total size of the copied save tree with the live tree.
  2. Open the backup and confirm that it contains the world folder, game folder, player-related files, and recent modification times.
  3. Check that the Mods backup contains the actual mod directories and not only an empty parent folder.
  4. Keep the backup in a location the reinstall cannot touch. If possible, retain a second copy until players have joined the restored server successfully.

If a host panel offers a downloadable archive, download it to your own storage as well. A panel backup that remains only on the host does not protect you from an account, disk, or mistaken-delete failure.

Choose validation or a clean reinstall

Do not wipe the server merely because one binary is missing. SteamCMD can validate the installation in place and replace damaged or incomplete downloaded files while leaving your separately stored data alone.

Approach Use it when Data-loss risk Downtime and trade-off
Validate in place Files are missing, corrupted, or an update appears incomplete Low, provided you do not remove the save directory Usually shorter; preserves the existing layout and configuration.
Clean reinstall The installation is irreparably damaged, repeatedly fails validation, or contains unwanted remnants High if the backup is incomplete Longer; requires recreating the service settings and restoring data.

For either approach, keep the backup untouched. If you choose a clean reinstall, stop the service, verify the backup again, and rename or remove only the server installation directory. Never remove the separate backup or a save directory that is outside the installation path.

Install or repair the dedicated server with SteamCMD

Install SteamCMD separately from the player game. Choose a fixed server directory and run the documented app-update command:

+force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit

Replace <server-path> with the directory you recorded or the new directory you selected. The validate option checks downloaded files and retrieves replacements for files that are missing or do not match the expected version. On a repair, point SteamCMD at the existing server directory; on a clean reinstall, point it at the empty directory you created.

Linux considerations

Create a dedicated, non-root service account for the server and use a fixed installation directory that account can access. Run SteamCMD in the intended location, then ensure the service account can read the installation and write the save, log, and configuration paths. Running the game service as root makes ownership mistakes and recovery harder.

After restoring files, check ownership and permissions recursively. A save copied by an administrator may be readable only by that administrator, causing the server to start with an empty world or fail to write progress. Correct the ownership using your distribution’s normal file-management tools before starting the service.

  • Craft - craft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, and more
  • Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead
  • Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with support for up to 4 players online, in Player versus Player, co-op survival, or co-op creative modes

Windows considerations

Install SteamCMD in its own directory, select a server directory with sufficient free space, and run the same app-update command from a command prompt or script. If the server runs as a Windows service or scheduled task, confirm that its account can access the restored files and that the task still points to the new installation path.

Protect your configuration from future updates

Do not edit the vendor-shipped configuration as your only copy. Copy serverconfig.xml to a custom filename such as myserver.xml, apply your settings there, and launch the server with that custom file. Keeping your settings in a separately named XML reduces the chance that an update replaces them with a new default file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve the custom file in your backup and in your service definition. A reinstall can restore the XML itself but still start with defaults if the launch script or panel entry continues to reference the old filename. Verify the argument or panel field that selects the configuration before bringing the server online.

Restore the world and mods

Restore the save tree

Place the backed-up save directory into the location expected by the newly installed server. Preserve the original hierarchy: the server should find the same Saves/<world>/<game> structure rather than a second nested copy created by an archive extraction.

Do not rename the world or game directory unless you intentionally want the server to create or load a different identity. A seemingly harmless rename can make the server report that no existing world is available.

Restore mods as a set

Copy the complete backed-up Mods directory into the new installation or the path configured for mods. Restore all required mod folders together. Starting with only some of them can produce missing assembly errors, changed blocks, or a world that loads without expected content.

If a mod has a separate version requirement, install the version that matches the backed-up world and the server branch. Do not use the reinstall as an opportunity to update every mod at once; first prove that the original combination loads, then change one component at a time.

Restore administration and operational files

Copy administrator and permission files, whitelist or blacklist data, and any other server-side JSON or XML files you recorded. Recreate the launch script, service unit, scheduled task, or panel startup entry and point it at the new installation and your custom XML. For a managed host, use the panel file manager or SFTP rather than placing files in a path the panel does not use.

Match the client and server branch

Select the same stable or experimental branch and build on the server and on every player client. A server that is one branch or build ahead can reject connections even when the world files are intact. Before testing, check the branch selected in the server installation method and the branch selected by the game clients.

When a new game update has just released, wait for the dedicated server and player client to converge on the same build, or keep both sides on the same supported branch. Do not troubleshoot ports or saves until the version numbers agree.

Start the restored server and verify it

  1. Start the service with the custom XML configuration and the intended branch.
  2. Watch the console and log files from startup through world loading. Stop and investigate any error naming a missing save, mod, assembly, permission, or configuration file.
  3. Confirm that the expected world name appears and that the server does not generate a new blank world.
  4. Join from a client running the matching branch and build. Check that an existing player can see the expected character, inventory, location, progression, and claimed structures.
  5. Test a safe action such as placing and removing a block, then stop the server cleanly and confirm that the save files’ modification times advance.
  6. Check the configured game port, firewall rules, router or NAT forwarding, and any panel-level network settings. A successful local start does not prove that remote players can connect.
  7. Only after these checks pass should you delete the old installation directory or retire the second backup copy.

Platform and hosting workflows

Self-hosted Linux

The reliable sequence is: stop the service, copy data as the service account or preserve ownership, validate or reinstall app 294420, restore files, fix ownership, and start the service. Keep the installation path fixed so scripts, firewall rules, and monitoring do not need to be rewritten after every reinstall.

Self-hosted Windows

Stop the service or scheduled task, copy the save and mod directories to another drive, run SteamCMD in the selected server directory, restore the files, and update the task or service to use the custom XML. Check the Windows account used by the service because permissions can differ from those of the administrator who performed the copy.

Managed hosting

Panel labels and paths vary. Before pressing a reinstall button, download a backup of the complete save tree, mods, and configuration. After the panel provisions a fresh server, upload those files through its file manager or SFTP, select the intended branch, and use the panel’s startup configuration to reference the custom XML. Confirm whether the panel automatically installs mods or overwrites them during an update.

Managed hosting reduces operating-system administration, but it does not remove the need for independent backups. You still need a copy that is not dependent on the host account.

Troubleshooting after reinstall

The server starts a new world

Stop it immediately so the new world does not overwrite expectations. Check that the save was copied to the server’s actual Saves location, that the world and game directory names match the original, and that the service account can read the files. Also verify that the custom XML does not specify a different world or game name.

Players cannot connect

First compare the client and server branch and build. Then verify that the server is listening on the configured port, the host firewall allows it, and the router forwards it to the correct machine. A reinstall can reset firewall rules or panel port assignments even when the game files are correct.

Mods fail to load

Check that the entire Mods directory was restored, that its path is the one used by the new installation, and that each mod supports the selected game build. Read the startup log for the first missing dependency or assembly error. Restore the original mod set before attempting upgrades.

The server cannot save or loses progress

On Linux, inspect ownership and write permissions for the save directory. On Windows, check the service account’s access and whether security software blocks writes. Confirm that the disk is not full and that the server is being stopped cleanly. Test by making a harmless change, stopping normally, and checking that the relevant save files receive new timestamps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings revert to defaults

Confirm that the launch entry references your custom XML rather than the newly shipped default. Check for a panel template or startup script that copies a default file over yours at launch. Restore the custom file from the independent backup and make the startup reference explicit.

How to prevent the next emergency reinstall

  • Schedule copies of the complete save tree, Mods directory, custom XML, and administration files to storage outside the installation directory.
  • Keep at least one backup that the server process cannot delete or overwrite.
  • Before every game or mod update, record the current branch and create a fresh backup.
  • Test a backup periodically on a temporary installation so you know the archive contains a usable world rather than an empty parent folder.
  • Keep launch scripts and service definitions under versioned or dated filenames, with the active configuration clearly identified.

The safest reinstall is therefore a controlled replacement of binaries, not a blind wipe: preserve the data, validate when possible, restore deliberately, match versions, and verify a real player session before declaring the server recovered.
