After reinstalling Linux on a server, set up NanoClaw from a fresh checkout of its official repository and run bash nanoclaw.sh. If the server already hosts NanoClaw, treat the operating-system reinstall as destructive: the project’s reviewed instructions do not provide a complete backup-and-restore checklist, so identify and preserve the state you need before wiping the host.
Before you reinstall the operating system
First determine whether the target is a physical server or a hosted Linux instance. NanoClaw’s instructions support Linux but do not require a particular server vendor or VPS provider. The reimage method—and how you access backups—depends on who manages that host.

If NanoClaw is already installed, inventory the data and configuration that matter to you and arrange backups before reinstalling the OS. The official sources reviewed do not specify a comprehensive restore list or guarantee that a fresh install will recover an existing instance. Do not assume that reinstalling NanoClaw, or using its v1-to-v2 migration script, restores a wiped host.
Choose the NanoClaw release or repository checkout you intend to install, then follow that checkout’s current README. The project’s website and repository currently state different minimum Node.js versions, so the checkout’s instructions are the more relevant guide to its installation.

Install NanoClaw on the clean Linux host
For a fresh setup, the NanoClaw README’s quick start is to clone the repository, enter the new directory, and run the installer:
git clone https://github.com/nanocoai/nanoclaw.git nanoclaw-v2
cd nanoclaw-v2
bash nanoclaw.sh
The installer is described as installing Node.js, pnpm, and Docker when they are missing, configuring a credential gateway, building the agent container, and walking you through pairing an initial messaging channel. Follow the prompts and the README for the release you cloned.

Check the documented prerequisites
The current repository README lists macOS or Linux, Windows through WSL2, Node.js 22 or later, and pnpm 10 or later. It specifies Docker Engine for Linux and Docker Desktop for macOS or Windows. The README also lists Claude Code for tasks such as customization, debugging, setup-error recovery, and channel skills.

Because those Node.js minimums conflict, do not treat the website’s lower figure as confirmation that a given checkout supports it; check the README and installer guidance for the release you are installing. The reviewed installation sources do not state minimum CPU, RAM, storage, or bandwidth requirements.

If you are moving an existing NanoClaw v1 installation
The documented v1-to-v2 migration is an application migration, not a general procedure for restoring NanoClaw after an operating-system wipe. The README’s path is to create a fresh v2 checkout alongside the v1 installation and run bash migrate-v2.sh directly—not from inside a Claude session.
The script can merge .env, seed the v2 database from registered_groups, copy group folders, session data, scheduled tasks, and selected channel authentication, and build the agent container. It leaves the v1 installation untouched. The script does not switch the system service automatically: test the v2 setup first, then use the offered switch prompt or make the service change manually. These documented behaviors do not establish what must be backed up or how to restore a host that has already been reimaged.

Understand the container security boundaries
NanoClaw’s security documentation describes agents running in per-session containers as non-root users with explicit filesystem mounts. It says the host project root and .env are not mounted into agent containers; credentials are injected through a gateway rather than written into container files or environment variables. The documentation says a configured gateway is needed for sessions and that the gateway provider is installed through a skill.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Egress lockdown is off by default in the reviewed security documentation. Operators can enable it with NANOCLAW_EGRESS_LOCKDOWN=true; when enabled, agents have no direct internet route and must use the gateway. This is an optional security setting, not a default behavior to assume for every fresh installation.

Container isolation does not replace host backups, operating-system updates, or careful mount selection. The security documentation notes that mounts determine what an agent can access and that additional mounts require operator-side allowlisting.
What to have ready
- A clean Linux host and a way to reinstall its operating system, whether it is physical or hosted.
- A backup plan for any existing host or NanoClaw state you need to retain. The reviewed official sources do not give a complete reimage restore checklist.
- The NanoClaw repository checkout and its release-specific README, plus the required software prerequisites for that release.
- Access to the messaging channel you plan to pair and the credentials or gateway configuration required during setup.
No particular physical item is documented as necessary for NanoClaw installation. Boot media and external backup storage may suit a specific bare-metal reimage, but the right choice depends on the server and reinstall method.
Review what you run
The NanoClaw project README says, “You should still review what you’re running, but the codebase is small enough that you actually can.” That is a useful reminder to inspect the code and setup instructions before granting access or configuring mounts.
