If a Steam game runs badly on your PC, request a refund through Steam Support promptly. Steam’s standard terms cover a request made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. You can still submit a request if you are outside either limit, but Steam reviews it and does not guarantee approval.
Check Steam’s standard refund limits
Steam’s standard refund terms for games require both conditions: the purchase was made within the last 14 days, and total playtime is less than two hours. Steam counts online, offline, and shared-library playtime. See Steam’s refund FAQ for the policy.

A game’s poor performance can be the reason you give for requesting a refund, but Steam does not publish a separate automatic performance exception. Meeting the standard limits does not mean you should describe the problem as something other than it is; explain the issue accurately.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

- Sign in to Steam Support.
- Open Purchases and select the transaction for the game.
- Choose the problem that best describes what happened, then select the refund request option.
- Complete the form, choose an available refund destination—Steam Wallet or the original payment method where offered—and submit it.
Describe the problem briefly and specifically, such as persistent low frame rates, stuttering, or the game failing to launch. These are examples of useful descriptions, not separate Steam eligibility categories. If you are close to either limit, submit promptly rather than spending hours repeatedly launching the game to collect evidence; each launch can add to counted playtime.

What if you have passed the 14-day or two-hour limit?
You can still submit a request through Steam Support when you do not meet the standard conditions. Steam says it will review requests outside those limits, but does not promise an exception. Explain what is happening and mention any relevant troubleshooting you have already tried. Do not assume that a performance problem automatically overrides the standard terms.
Decide whether troubleshooting is worth the time
Troubleshooting is optional; Steam does not require it before you request a refund. If you want to check whether the problem is fixable, Steam’s PC performance guide suggests checking the game’s system requirements, closing unnecessary background programs, freeing memory, updating drivers, choosing a suitable resolution, and lowering graphics settings. Meeting listed requirements does not guarantee high frame rates or strong performance.

For a Valve game, Steam’s guide describes hardware auto-detection and a launch option for restoring reasonable video settings. For a third-party game, it recommends contacting the developer’s support team about unresolved resolution or configuration issues; find the game’s Support link on its Library page. Keep troubleshooting brief if you are still within the refund window.

How long does an approved refund take?
Steam says an approved refund can take up to seven days to appear. Steam Wallet credits may arrive within 24–48 hours, while international payment methods can take longer.
