Refund rules depend on the store: PlayStation’s U.S. policy generally requires a game not to have been downloaded or streamed and a request within 14 days; Nintendo of America treats digital purchases as final unless it authorizes an exception or applicable law requires a refund; and Steam’s standard rule is a request within 14 days with less than two hours of playtime. For Xbox, use Microsoft’s official refund portal and check the eligibility shown for your purchase—the specific Xbox threshold is not established by the linked support instructions.
Act promptly, check the terms for your country and content type, and use the account that made the purchase. A refund request is different from canceling future subscription renewals.

Quick comparison: which rules apply?
| Store and scope | Deadline or eligibility | Download or playtime effect | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store, U.S. guide | For full games and DLC, request within 14 days of purchase, unless the content is faulty. | The content must not have been downloaded or streamed. Preloads can affect pre-order eligibility. | Transaction History, then select the transaction and choose Request Refund. |
| Nintendo eShop, Nintendo of America policy | Digital-product payments are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. | No standard change-of-mind entitlement is stated. | Contact Nintendo Support if you believe an exception or local-law right applies. |
| Steam | Standard game requests: within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours played. | Both elapsed time and playtime matter. | Submit through Steam Support. |
| Xbox / Microsoft Store | The linked Xbox support instructions do not establish a specific Xbox time or playtime threshold; check the live portal for your purchase. | Do not assume Steam’s playtime rule applies. | Use Microsoft’s refund instructions and Xbox digital-games request portal. |
These policies are not interchangeable. The PlayStation and Nintendo policies cited here are for the U.S.; the Steam page is Valve’s policy, last updated April 23, 2024. Consumer rights and store terms can vary by country, so check the version that applies to your account.

The following steps reflect PlayStation’s U.S. refund guide. For a full game or add-on, the published criteria are a request within 14 days of purchase and no download or streaming, except where the content is faulty.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
- Open PlayStation’s refund guide and go to Transaction History using the account that made the purchase.
- Select the eligible transaction and choose Request Refund.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. If the option is unavailable or the request route fails, contact PlayStation Support; the online assistant can also help check eligibility.
Pre-orders, subscriptions, and in-game purchases
- Pre-orders: PlayStation applies separate rules depending on whether the order was placed more than 14 days before release or within 14 days of release. Eligibility also depends on whether the main content has been downloaded or preloaded, so automatic downloads may matter.
- In-game consumables: The U.S. guide generally limits eligibility to requests made within 14 days when the game has not been launched after the purchase.
- Subscriptions: A refund may be available only for the first payment and within 14 days of sign-up; use of the service can reduce the refund. Stopping future renewal is a separate action from requesting a refund for a past payment.
PlayStation’s Canada cancellation policy also states that additional rights may be available under local law. Its standard game and add-on rule uses a 14-day request window before downloading or streaming, with an exception for faulty content. Check the policy for your own country rather than assuming the U.S. guide applies worldwide.
How to request an Xbox digital-game refund
Microsoft directs Xbox customers to its digital-games refund page. Start with Microsoft’s official refund instructions and follow the link to Request a refund for digital games. Sign in with the purchasing account and review the eligibility displayed for the item before submitting.

The general Microsoft Store instructions for PC games say to select the item, choose Request a refund, explain the reason, and submit. Microsoft notes that online returns are unavailable in some markets. The linked instructions do not verify an Xbox-specific deadline or playtime cap, so do not rely on a threshold reported for another store.
Microsoft says a request may take up to 72 hours to process. If approved, the refund generally takes 3–5 business days to reach the original payment option.

How to request a Nintendo eShop refund
Nintendo of America’s U.S. policy says that, except where Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one, payments through Nintendo Account services—including pre-purchases and subscription payments—are final and non-refundable. That means a change of mind alone should not be treated as a standard basis for a refund.
If you believe your situation qualifies for an exception or that local law gives you a right to a refund, contact Nintendo Support through the digital-products policy page. The cited U.S. policy does not provide a general refund-request procedure or guarantee that an exception will be granted. Rules outside the United States may differ.

How to request a Steam refund
Valve’s standard policy for games and software apps is to request a refund within two weeks of purchase and have played for less than two hours. The conditions are separate: meeting the playtime limit does not extend the 14-day window, and being inside the window does not erase excess playtime.
- Open Steam’s refund policy and use Steam Support to select the purchase.
- Submit the refund request and follow the prompts.
Valve says requests outside the standard criteria may still be submitted for review, but that does not guarantee approval. For DLC, Valve’s policy specifies a 14-day window and less than two hours played in the underlying game since buying the DLC; some DLC is excluded if it has been consumed, modified, or transferred. Pre-release purchases have a separate start point for the 14-day period, and Early Access playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. Check the relevant section of the policy for those cases.

Valve says approved refunds are issued within a week, either to the original payment method where supported or to Steam Wallet if that method cannot receive the refund.
Quick Recap
Before you submit
- Use the account that made the purchase and open its transaction or order history.
- Check whether the item is a full game, DLC, pre-order, consumable, or subscription; the rules may differ.
- For PlayStation, check whether the game was downloaded or streamed. For Steam, check both purchase date and playtime.
- Read the policy for your country. A U.S. page may not describe your local rights or storefront terms.
- Keep the request confirmation and monitor the original payment method or store wallet for the result.
