When Copilot on Windows 11 feels “stale” (stuck loading, not responding, or showing an outdated state), you don’t need a full PC reset. A controlled refresh—closing sessions, clearing the right cache, updating the right components—usually gets it working again.
This guide walks through every practical way to refresh Copilot on Windows 11, whether you use the Copilot app, the Copilot experience inside Microsoft Edge, or the Copilot web flow. You’ll also get symptom-based troubleshooting and safe “last resort” steps.

What Refreshing Copilot Means on Windows 11
“Refreshing Copilot” can mean different things depending on where Copilot is running. In practice, it usually covers one or more of these actions:
- Restarting Copilot processes so the session re-initializes.
- Re-authenticating your Microsoft account when tokens or cookies go bad.
- Updating Copilot-related components (Windows, Edge, WebView2, Store apps).
- Clearing targeted caches that can break UI rendering or request flows.
Because Windows 11 Copilot can run through different app surfaces, the “best” refresh method varies. That’s why this guide gives multiple options and tells you when to use each.

Before You Start: Quick Checks
These checks take 30–60 seconds and prevent you from chasing the wrong problem.
- Confirm you’re online: open Settings > Network & internet and verify you’re connected.
- Check Microsoft service status: if Copilot is down globally, no cache clear will fix it.
- Try a different browser profile in Edge (or an InPrivate window) to isolate cookie/auth issues.
- Disable VPN/proxy temporarily to test whether routing is causing auth failures.
Refresh Copilot in the Fastest Ways (Most Fixes)
Start with the least invasive steps. Most “refresh” problems resolve within 2–5 minutes.
Use the Copilot UI controls (Reset / New chat patterns)
If Copilot is responding but feels wrong or stuck mid-conversation, try creating a new session. Look for a New chat or Reset-style option in the Copilot interface.

Restart Copilot using Task Manager
When Copilot’s UI is frozen, restarting its running processes is often the cleanest refresh.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, look for items related to Copilot, Microsoft Edge (if Copilot is running inside Edge), or any session processes associated with Copilot.
- Select the process and click End task.
- Close Task Manager, then reopen Copilot.
If Copilot is embedded in Edge, restarting Edge is usually enough. If you use the dedicated Copilot experience, end the relevant Copilot-related process as well.
Force a sign-out and sign-in
Auth drift is a common reason Copilot appears “out of date.” Sign-out refreshes tokens and cookies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Copilot in your usual way (Copilot app or Edge sidebar).
- Click your profile/account icon inside Copilot.
- Choose Sign out.
- Close Copilot completely (use Task Manager if needed).
- Open Copilot again and sign in with the same Microsoft account.
If you have multiple Microsoft accounts, verify you’re signing into the one that’s meant for Copilot on this PC.
Refresh the Copilot tab in Microsoft Edge
If you’re using Copilot through Edge (sidebar or web), a targeted tab refresh can clear transient UI failures.
- Switch to the Edge tab where Copilot is loaded.
- Press Ctrl + R to reload the page.
- If it still misbehaves, press Ctrl + Shift + R for a hard reload.
- Retry the action that was failing (opening chat, sending a prompt, attaching content).
For quick isolation, also test an InPrivate window. If Copilot works there, your normal Edge profile is holding onto broken cookies or cached data.
Update Copilot Components on Windows 11
Copilot’s stability depends on your OS, Microsoft Edge, and the Windows app platform. Updating these components is often the real fix behind “refresh” requests.

- Click About Microsoft Edge.
- Edge will check for updates automatically. Install and restart Edge if prompted.
Update Microsoft Store apps (including Copilot)
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Click Library.
- Select Get updates.
- Install updates for Copilot or related apps, then restart Copilot.
If you don’t see Copilot listed, proceed to cache clearing and the reinstall steps later in this guide.
Clear Caches That Commonly Break Copilot
Cache clearing can fix stuck loading, broken UI rendering, and repeated sign-in loops. The key is to start targeted and only go broad if needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReset Microsoft Store cache (wsreset)
If Copilot is installed as a Microsoft Store app and it won’t update or load correctly, resetting the Store cache can help.
- Press Win key, type wsreset.
- Right-click the result and run it as admin if prompted.
- Wait for the Store reset to complete (the window will close).
- Open Microsoft Store and check for Copilot updates.
Don’t panic if it takes 1–3 minutes; this process is silent but normal.
Clear Edge browsing data for Copilot (targeted)
If Copilot works in InPrivate but not your main profile, your Edge cache/cookies are the likely culprit.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Clear browsing data, click Choose what to clear.
- Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
- Set Time range to Last 24 hours (or All time if you need the full reset).
- Click Clear now.
After clearing, reload Edge and sign in to Copilot again.

Repair Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime
Many Windows 11 app experiences rely on WebView2 for embedded web UI. If WebView2 is out of sync, Copilot surfaces can break.
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.
- If you see Modify or Repair, run it.
- Reboot the PC, then open Copilot again.
If you don’t see it in Installed apps, update Edge first; WebView2 often updates as part of Edge runtime maintenance.
Reset or Reinstall Copilot (When Refresh Doesn’t Work)
If Copilot is consistently broken after refresh, cache clears, and updates, reinstalling the app (or re-adding the Store version) is the strongest practical fix.

Uninstall and reinstall Copilot from Settings
This is the cleanest “reset” when Copilot exists as a standalone Windows app.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Go to Installed apps.
- Search for Copilot or Microsoft Copilot.
- Select it and click Uninstall.
- Restart Windows 11.
- Install Copilot again from the Microsoft Store (or reinstall via the Store link you use).
- Open Copilot and sign in.
Reinstalling forces a clean app package state, which often fixes UI and auth initialization issues.
Reinstall via Microsoft Store (manual)
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Search for Copilot.
- Select the official listing (Microsoft publisher) and click Install.
- Once installed, open Copilot and verify it loads the chat UI.
If the Store listing doesn’t appear or installation fails, run wsreset (earlier in this guide), then try again.

Use this section to jump straight to the most likely cause.
Copilot won’t open or stays loading
- Restart Copilot (Task Manager) and reload the Edge tab (if embedded).
- Update Windows 11 and Edge to current versions, then reboot.
- Clear Edge cookies/cache for the last 24 hours and retry.
Copilot says you’re signed out repeatedly
- Force sign-out and sign-in from inside Copilot.
- Clear Edge cookies for the Copilot site scope (or clear cookies within the chosen time range).
- Try InPrivate mode: if it works there, your normal profile has corrupted auth state.
Copilot responses are blank or error out
- Hard reload the Copilot tab (Ctrl + Shift + R).
- Ensure Edge updates are installed, then restart Edge.
- If the issue persists, reinstall Copilot and check WebView2 runtime health.
Copilot only fails on one device/network
- Test with a different network (phone hotspot) to isolate DNS/proxy issues.
- Temporarily disable VPN/proxy and retry.
- Confirm system time and timezone are correct (wrong time can break auth tokens).
Security, Privacy, and Admin Notes
If your PC is managed by an organization, policies can restrict Copilot sign-in, runtime components, or Store installs. In those cases, refreshing may work only partially until your admin adjusts settings.
- Corporate devices: check whether Microsoft Store app installation or WebView2 updates are allowed.
- Privacy mode: strict tracking protection or cookie blocking can cause Copilot auth loops.
- Browser extensions: ad blockers and script blockers can break embedded Copilot UI. Test with extensions disabled.
FAQ: Refreshing Copilot on Windows 11
Why does Copilot feel outdated even after I reload?
Most often, you’re dealing with cached auth state (cookies/tokens) or a stale runtime component (Edge/WebView2). Clearing targeted Edge data and forcing sign-in usually fixes this faster than repeated reloads.
Should I clear my entire Edge history?
Not by default. Start with a short time range (like Last 24 hours) and clear cookies/cache, then retry Copilot. Only move to All time if you still can’t get Copilot working.
Does refreshing Copilot delete my chats?
A reload or restart typically doesn’t delete your saved chats server-side. However, starting a new chat thread may create a separate session. If you clear cookies, you might be forced to sign back in, but your chat history should remain tied to your account.
Can I fix Copilot without reinstalling?
Yes. In most cases, Task Manager restart + sign-out/sign-in + Edge reload + targeted cache clearing solves the issue. Reinstall is the strongest step when components are corrupted or updates won’t apply.

What if Copilot is down for everyone?
If Microsoft has a service incident, you’ll see widespread failures across devices and networks. In that scenario, the best refresh is patience plus confirming status, not repeated reinstall attempts.
Bottom Line
To refresh Copilot on Windows 11, start with the fast, low-risk steps: end the running Copilot/Edge session, reload the Copilot tab, and sign out then back in. If it still fails, update Windows 11 and Edge and clear targeted Edge cookies/cache.
When the problem persists, reset the Microsoft Store cache and reinstall Copilot. That combination covers the common causes—stale sessions, broken caches, and outdated runtimes—without wasting time on unnecessary system resets.
