How to Reduce Windows 11 Update Restart Interruptions

Windows 11 has no standard setting to permanently disable update restart notices. Use Active hours to avoid inconvenient restarts and schedule a time when an update is waiting.

You can’t permanently turn off Windows Update restart notifications with a standard Windows 11 setting. To reduce interruptions, set Active hours so Windows avoids restarting while you usually use your PC, and schedule a convenient time when an update is waiting for a restart. Do Not Disturb can hide general notification banners, but Microsoft does not document it as a switch for Windows Update restart notices.

Set Active hours to avoid inconvenient automatic restarts

Active hours tell Windows when you are usually using your PC, helping it avoid restarting at an inconvenient time. They do not disable updates or guarantee that Windows will never need to restart. Microsoft’s documented path is Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.
  2. Choose Automatically if you want Windows to adjust active hours based on device activity.
  3. Choose Manually if your routine is predictable, then set the hours when you normally use the PC.

Automatic hours require less upkeep; manual hours give you more control over the window Windows treats as active.

Schedule a restart for an update that is already waiting

Active hours set your usual availability. Scheduling is a separate option for an update that is already waiting to restart. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Schedule the restart if Windows displays it, then choose a convenient time. Microsoft says Windows tries to restart when the device is not being used and asks you to schedule a convenient time if it cannot do so. The scheduling option may not appear unless a restart is pending. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.

What Do Not Disturb can—and cannot—silence

To limit general notification banners, go to Settings > System > Notifications and configure Do Not Disturb. It can route notifications to Notification Center instead of showing banners. Microsoft’s guidance covers notifications generally; it does not establish that Do Not Disturb disables Windows Update restart notices. For update restarts, use Active hours and the scheduling option when available. See Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows.

Can you turn off Windows Update or avoid every restart?

No—not through the documented consumer controls. Microsoft says updates are needed to keep devices safe and secure. You can pause updates temporarily from Windows Update, but Windows requires you to install the latest updates before you can pause again. In its guidance published August 14, 2026, Microsoft describes a pause of up to 35 days for the update experience covered by that guidance; after the pause, Windows checks for and installs the latest updates. These are temporary controls, not a permanent way to disable updates. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ and its August 14, 2026 update guidance.

What changed in Windows Update restart behavior in 2026?

For Windows updates released on or after July 28, 2026, Microsoft is gradually rolling out a change that groups some restart-requiring driver, .NET, and firmware updates with the monthly security update so they can share a restart. The change may not be available on every device. It does not mean all updates will wait for a monthly restart or that restart notices will disappear.

Does hotpatching stop restart prompts for everyone?

No. Some Windows 11 devices may receive hotpatch security updates that take effect without restarting, but eligibility is limited. Microsoft says an organization’s IT department normally decides whether a managed work device is enrolled. Hotpatching is not a general Windows setting that every user can enable to silence restart notifications. See Microsoft’s hotpatch update guidance.
