Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo reduce unnecessary memory pressure in Windows 11, first check which apps and workloads are using memory, then adjust only the ones you recognize: disable unneeded startup apps, limit background activity where the option is available, and close unused apps or browser tabs. High RAM use alone does not prove there is a problem; judge it alongside slowdowns and the workload you are running.
Check memory use before changing anything
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes page, review the Memory column to see which apps are using memory. On Performance, check overall memory use alongside whether the slowdown happens during a particular task or even when you are doing very little.
There is no single memory-use number that identifies the cause of a slow PC. Microsoft recommends checking resource-heavy processes because performance problems can have several causes. If a familiar, nonessential app appears unusually heavy and is not needed right now, close it as a temporary test and see whether responsiveness improves. Avoid ending unfamiliar processes: they may belong to Windows or to software you rely on.
Keep the normal workload in mind while testing. A browser with many tabs, editing software, and several open apps can use more memory than a light workload. The useful question is whether a specific app or combination of tasks coincides with the slowdown, not whether Task Manager shows a low number.

Stop unneeded apps from launching at sign-in
Use Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps. These controls determine which apps launch when you sign in; disabling an entry does not uninstall the app.
Disable only entries you recognize and do not need running automatically. Task Manager’s Startup impact column helps identify apps that affect startup time, but it is not a measure of how much memory an app currently uses. Microsoft defines “High impact” as more than 1 second of total CPU usage or more than 3 MB of total disk usage during startup. Treat that rating as one clue about sign-in performance, not proof that the app is causing a memory-related slowdown.

Limit background activity only when the tradeoff is acceptable
For apps that support the setting, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage, open the app options, and select Manage background activity. The setting is not available for every app.
- Power optimized (recommended): Windows manages background activity while allowing periodic updates or notifications.
- Never: The app cannot run in the background while inactive. You may stop receiving its background notifications or updates.
- Always: Keep this for apps that need background activity, such as those you rely on for syncing or timely notifications.
Choose based on what you need from each app. If an app’s notifications or updates matter, leave it on Always or Power optimized rather than setting it to Never just to reduce background work.

Reduce the workload, then retest
Close apps and browser tabs you are not using, then check whether the slowdown eases. If it does not, restart Windows and reopen only the apps needed for your normal task. Test after each change so you can tell whether it helped and reverse it if it disrupted something you rely on.
These steps target unnecessary app activity without disabling Windows services, security protections, or core features. Avoid treating cached or system-managed memory as waste simply because it appears in a memory report; the figures alone do not show that it is the source of a slowdown.

Consider RAM capacity only after checking the cause
Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum RAM requirement for Windows 11. Its general memory guidance recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term, and says 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance work. These are broad recommendations, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that adding memory will fix a specific performance problem.
If slowdowns persist during your usual workload after unnecessary app activity is addressed, check the exact PC model’s manufacturer guidance to see whether its RAM can be upgraded and what configurations it supports. Do not assume memory is upgradeable or choose a module without confirming compatibility for that model.
