The biggest cost lever is usually not the VPS’s processor; it is how much audio the server sends to listeners. Keep the single source feed lean, then estimate listener-delivery traffic from your bitrate and audience hours. Test lower bitrates or mono carefully, verify codec support on your actual players, and compare the resulting traffic with your provider’s transfer allowance and overage charges.
Where the traffic—and cost—comes from
A typical internet-radio setup has two traffic legs: an encoder or generator sends one feed to a media server, and that server sends copies to listeners. The source feed continues even when nobody is listening; outbound listener delivery grows with the audience. That distinction matters when choosing a plan. Reducing the source feed’s bitrate saves some traffic, but listener egress can dominate once people tune in. A low base VPS price is not necessarily a low total cost if the plan includes little transfer or charges for overages.
Estimate monthly delivery traffic before changing providers
Start with the encoded bitrate and the total listener-hours you expect. For a rough lower-bound estimate, each 1 kbps carried continuously for 30 days is about 0.324 GB in decimal units. Multiply that by the stream bitrate and by the average number of concurrent listeners. For example, a 32 kbps stream delivered continuously to one listener is roughly 10.4 GB over 30 days; 10 listeners receiving it continuously would be roughly 104 GB. These are estimates based on a constant bitrate and 30 days, before protocol or container overhead.

For less-than-continuous listening, use listener-hours rather than assuming every listener stays connected all month. One calculation is:
Approximate delivery in GB = bitrate in kbps × listener-hours × 0.00045
This estimates decimal gigabytes and excludes overhead, reconnects, and any extra traffic from monitoring or relays. Compare the estimate with the specific VPS plan’s included transfer, billing period, overage rate, and any separate streaming or CDN charges. The total cost is the base fee plus those additional charges—not just the advertised VPS price.

Choose a codec your listeners can actually play
MP3 for broad compatibility
Liquidsoap’s encoding-format documentation describes MP3 as having the widest compatibility. If your audience uses a mix of browsers, apps, smart speakers, or embedded players, MP3 is a sensible compatibility-oriented starting point: Liquidsoap: Encoding Formats.
Opus or Vorbis when clients support them
Opus and Vorbis are supported by modern browsers and can offer good perceived quality at lower bitrates, according to the same Liquidsoap documentation. That does not establish that every app, speaker, or player your audience uses will accept them. Test the actual listening paths—including any mobile or embedded players—before switching, and retain a compatible fallback if needed.
Test bitrate and channels against your relaxation audio
Lowering bitrate reduces the stream’s delivery traffic in proportion to the rate reduction. Changing stereo to mono can reduce the encoded data rate further, but it also removes spatial separation. That trade-off is especially relevant if your relaxation audio relies on stereo ambience, movement, or layered environmental sound.

Liquidsoap’s cookbook shows both a 128 kbps MP3 output and a 32 kbps mono MP3 configuration. These are examples to test, not universal quality recommendations: Liquidsoap: Cookbook, Transcoding.
- Keep a copy of the current stream configuration and note its codec, bitrate, channel count, and sample rate.
- Make one change at a time: first try a lower bitrate in the same codec and channel layout; then test mono separately if the content can tolerate it.
- Listen on headphones and on representative phones, speakers, and browsers. Check quiet passages, sustained tones, nature textures, and any source with stereo movement for audible artifacts or loss of space.
- Confirm that each intended player can connect and continue playing. A smaller stream rate is not a saving if the codec breaks playback for part of the audience.
- Use the measured output rate—not merely the configured target—to update the listener-traffic estimate.
Avoid paying CPU for needless conversions
Encoding and decoding can be CPU-intensive. Liquidsoap’s cookbook cautions that transcoding consumes CPU, so a configuration that decodes, resamples, and re-encodes without a delivery need can force a larger VPS. If the source is already in the format you intend to deliver, avoid converting it just by habit. When conversion is required, measure CPU with the real stream running, including playlist changes and other peak-workload moments, before moving to a smaller server tier.
There is no universal VPS size established for this workload. CPU needs depend on the actual pipeline—such as decoding, mixing, resampling, and encoding—while network cost depends heavily on bitrate and listener-hours.

- Any separate streaming, relay, or CDN charges.
- CPU and memory headroom for the measured audio pipeline.
- Operational needs such as monitoring, restarts, and recovery when a process or connection fails.
Billing rules differ by product. Cloudflare’s billing documentation says bandwidth is included in Cloudflare plans and describes separate metering for Argo data transfer: Cloudflare: How charges accrue. Its Bandwidth Alliance describes transfer discounts or waivers that depend on participating partners and terms: Cloudflare: Bandwidth Alliance. Neither example establishes what another provider will charge; check the applicable contract and current pricing.
Cloudflare Stream’s pricing page, last updated September 8, 2026, lists video delivery at $1 per 1,000 minutes and says bandwidth is included for video delivery: Cloudflare Stream pricing. That is a video-service price, not evidence that Cloudflare Stream is a suitable or cheaper replacement for an audio-only radio service.

Troubleshoot a bill or stream that does not improve
The transfer bill remains high after lowering bitrate
Check actual listener-hours and concurrent audience assumptions first. The server sends the feed to each listener, so audience delivery may outweigh the single encoder-to-server feed. Also verify the measured output bitrate and account for overhead before comparing it with the provider’s traffic meter.
Some listeners cannot connect after a codec change
Test the affected browser, app, speaker, or embedded player directly. Codec support varies across clients; return to MP3 for broader compatibility or provide a tested compatible option rather than assuming all modern devices handle the same formats.
The smaller VPS struggles after transcoding changes
Measure CPU during steady playback and during the most demanding parts of the actual pipeline. Decoding, resampling, mixing, and encoding can all contribute. Remove unnecessary conversions or restore the previous tier if the service cannot sustain its workload reliably.
A cheap plan becomes expensive at month-end
Compare the plan’s included transfer with actual metered usage and read the overage terms. Recalculate using real listener-hours and the delivered bitrate; then compare providers only with equivalent geography, service scope, and billing conditions.
