To reduce toxic interactions, use mute, block, and report for their different purposes, tighten who can contact you, and follow the game’s code of conduct when deciding what to report. To avoid unwanted player-versus-player combat, check for a non-PvP mode, private session, safe area, or matchmaking option—but these controls vary by game, and there is no universal PvP-off switch.
Start with the distinction between toxicity and PvP
Unwanted PvP and abusive conduct are related problems, but they are not the same. PvP is a game mode or encounter; a player may simply want a cooperative or solo experience. Toxicity involves conduct such as targeted harassment, hateful or demeaning language, threats, or privacy violations. A game can allow PvP while prohibiting those behaviors, and opting out of PvP does not necessarily prevent unpleasant chat or messages.

Because each publisher sets its own rules and features, use the specific game’s mode options, privacy settings, and code of conduct rather than assuming every title offers the same controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to avoid unwanted PvP
Before joining a session, look for clearly labeled PvE, cooperative, solo, or private options. Some games also have safe areas or matchmaking choices that reduce the chance of being attacked by other players. Check the game’s own menus and help pages; the available options depend on the title and may differ by platform or mode.
#1 Best Overall
- TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
- HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
- If the game offers a non-PvP mode, choose it before matchmaking or entering a session.
- If it supports private sessions, review who can join and whether invitations are required.
- Check whether safe areas apply only in specific locations or activities; do not assume they protect you everywhere.
- If there is no non-PvP mode or session option, the game may not provide a way to opt out. Consider a different activity or title rather than relying on a setting that does not exist.
These are useful checks, not a universal setting. The ESRB multiplayer gaming guidance explains general online play controls, but individual games determine their own modes and options.
Mute, block, and report serve different purposes
Use the control that matches the problem. ESRB explains that muting can let players remain in the same game without verbal communication. Blocking or unfriending can limit future contact or play, where the service supports those functions. Reporting is different: it alerts the game or platform to behavior that may violate its rules.
- Mute when you want to stop hearing or seeing someone’s voice or text during the current interaction.
- Block or unfriend when you want to reduce the chance of further contact or play with that person, subject to the service’s features.
- Report when conduct appears to breach the game’s code of conduct or platform rules.
Where available, use the game’s in-session or player-profile controls, or the platform’s player-safety menu. Exact menu names and paths differ; consult that title’s support page if you cannot find them. Muting can make an interaction more manageable, but it does not tell moderators about a rules violation or address the behavior beyond your own experience.

Use the game’s rules to decide what to report
Competitive talk is not automatically harassment. Bungie’s Community Standards and Codes of Conduct acknowledge that competition can get heated and distinguish game-focused banter from harassment, demeaning or hateful conduct, threats, and invasions of privacy. Other publishers define their rules separately, so check the standards for the game you are playing.
When an interaction crosses a stated rule, use the game or platform’s reporting flow and select the category that best fits. If contact is repeated, review who can message, invite, find, or see your account. Do not retaliate or share personal or account information. Bungie’s standards also prohibit using another person’s information to harass them. Keep any evidence only if it can be collected safely and the service’s process asks for it; there is no single evidence procedure established for every game.
Reduce exposure through privacy and family settings
Check account and platform controls for who can communicate with you, send invitations, find your profile, or join your sessions. The available controls depend on the game, platform, region, and account type. EA documents privacy and block/ignore tools, and says platform controls can disable communication or multiplayer in its games. Roblox documents interaction and privacy controls as well as parental tools.

For a child’s account, a parent or guardian can review communication, multiplayer, privacy, and age controls together with the child. Explain that they can ask for help after an upsetting interaction; reporting a problem should not automatically mean losing access to games. The Roblox safety-tools page describes its own controls, while ESRB’s guide covers general considerations for online multiplayer.
What players can expect from reporting—and what they cannot
Reporting gives the service a chance to review a potential rules violation; it does not guarantee a particular outcome. Publisher policies and enforcement vary. EA describes a combination of proactive filtering, player reports, technology, and human moderation, with warnings or stronger actions depending on the conduct. Nintendo says it supports reporting, enforcement, escalating restrictions, and human oversight in its Online Safety Principles. Those are statements about each company’s practices, not a guarantee that every publisher uses the same process or reaches the same result.
EA’s content-moderation page says every EA game launches with an in-game reporting option. It also describes Battlefield 6 voice reporting during play or at End of Round, where a report sends voice files from that round for transcription and moderation review. Those details are specific to EA and that title and may change; do not assume other games collect or review voice reports the same way. See EA’s content moderation explanation.

In a February 28, 2025 page about its 2024 transparency report, EA said more than half of content violations were minor disruptive behaviors that received a warning, and that its research and analytics showed warnings effective in stopping the majority of disruptive behavior. This is EA’s account of its own moderation findings, not an independent estimate that warnings work across games. Roblox says it made more than 100 safety enhancements in 2025; that is a company-reported activity count, not a measurement of how much toxicity declined. See EA’s transparency report page and Roblox’s safety-tools page.
How game operators can reduce harmful conduct
Player controls are one layer, not a substitute for good moderation. A game operator can make its standards clear, provide reporting where the behavior occurs, filter harmful content with attention to context, review reports with appropriate human oversight, and use proportionate enforcement that can escalate for repeated or serious violations. Nintendo describes its stated approach in its Online Safety Principles; EA outlines filtering and technology-plus-human moderation in its content moderation page.
Players comparing games can look at practical features rather than rely on a broad safety ranking: whether PvP can be avoided through mode or session choice; how accessible mute and block are; whether reports cover the relevant behavior, including voice where applicable; how much control players have over contact and discoverability; and how clearly the game explains review and enforcement. There is no comparative scorecard across games established by these sources.
