How to Reduce Stringing on a 3D Printer with Retraction Settings

Start with your printer’s material profile, tune retraction one setting at a time, and check temperature, filament moisture, and hardware if strings persist.

To reduce stringing, start with the correct printer-and-filament profile, then tune retraction length and speed one at a time using a repeatable test. If strings persist, check nozzle temperature, filament moisture, and the nozzle or hotend; retraction is not a universal fix, and there is no single setting that suits every printer.

Why is my 3D printer leaving strings?

Stringing—also called oozing or a “hairy” print—is the thin filament left between separate parts when material continues to escape from the nozzle during a travel move. The likely cause may be retraction, but temperature, filament condition, nozzle residue, or hotend assembly can also contribute.

Retraction pulls filament back before the nozzle travels and feeds it forward again when extrusion resumes. How much retraction works depends on the printer and extruder setup, so use the profile for your actual machine and material as the baseline. Prusa’s stringing and oozing guide recommends factory presets when you are not deliberately using custom settings.

How do I tune retraction settings?

Start with the right profile

Confirm the selected printer, extruder arrangement, nozzle, and filament profile match your setup. Do not copy a retraction value from a different printer: the distance filament travels through the extruder path changes what a setting does.

  • 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
  • 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
  • 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use

Test length and speed separately

Retraction length is how much filament is pulled back; retraction speed is how quickly it is pulled. Print a repeatable retraction test and change one control at a time, keeping the material, temperature, and other conditions the same. Compare both the amount of stringing and whether extrusion remains consistent. UltiMaker recommends retraction test models to help find a balance.

Do not treat published values as universal prescriptions. Prusa says the maximum retraction length should be 2 mm on MK2.5/S and MK3/S/+ machines; its Bowden MINI/MINI+ presets use 3.2 mm. An UltiMaker educational article gives 4.50 mm and 25 mm/s as an example in its own equipment context. These differences are a reason to use the profile for your own printer, not to average or transplant the numbers. Prusa’s guide and UltiMaker’s guide both caution, in effect, against excessive retraction.

  • After-sales Service: AMOLEN is focused on innovative and better quality 3d printing filaments. Stand behind the quality and performance of our 3D printer filament. Provide professional 3D printing technical guidance and good 24/7 customer service

Too much retraction length can strip filament or lead to inconsistent extrusion. Excessive speed can grind filament or make the extruder skip steps. If a change reduces strings but extrusion becomes unreliable, back off rather than increasing retraction further.

Where to find the controls

In PrusaSlicer, the documented path is Printer Settings → Extruder 1. Other slicers may put equivalent controls elsewhere or use different labels.

Which travel settings should I adjust?

Once basic retraction is behaving reliably, review travel options in the slicer. These settings can affect how often the nozzle crosses visible surfaces and where any oozing appears, but they do not correct wet filament or a hardware fault.

  • Z lift: Lowering it can reduce stringing. Disabling it entirely may increase the chance of the nozzle hitting the printed part.
  • Minimum travel distance for retraction: Raising this threshold can shorten print time, but may allow more oozing and stringing. Prusa’s guide says its PrusaSlicer preset uses 1 mm.
  • Retract on layer change and Wipe while retracting: Prusa recommends leaving both enabled unless you have a specific reason to test a controlled change.
  • Only retract when crossing perimeters and Avoid crossing perimeters: These options change how travel relates to visible walls. They manage travel paths, not the underlying moisture or hotend condition.

Can temperature cause stringing?

Yes. If the nozzle temperature is higher than the filament needs, material may ooze more readily during travel. Starting from the material profile, try a small reduction and compare prints. Prusa suggests a 5–10°C decrease as troubleshooting guidance; that is not a target temperature for every filament or printer. Keep the temperature high enough for reliable extrusion and layer bonding. Prusa’s guide also notes that PETG stringing can be moderated with lower nozzle temperature alongside appropriate retraction.

Could wet filament be the problem?

Moisture can cause stringing even when retraction seems reasonable. It may also show up alongside other surface-quality problems. If you suspect a spool, compare it with a known-dry spool of the same material, or dry it according to the filament maker’s temperature and time guidance. Make sure the spool itself can tolerate the method. Prusa notes that polyamide, PVA, and TPU more often need drying than common PLA. Its filament-drying guide explains why drying requirements should be material-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A filament dryer is relevant only if moisture is a plausible cause; it is not a guaranteed cure for stringing from every source.

What should I check on the nozzle and hotend?

Residue on the nozzle can catch strands and make them more noticeable. If the nozzle looks dirty, clean it using maintenance guidance for your printer. Prusa also identifies heat-dissipation problems and incorrect assembly after component changes as possible hotend causes. Use the service instructions for the particular printer and hotend rather than applying a generic disassembly or reassembly procedure.

Do PETG and flexible filaments need different settings?

PETG

PETG is prone to stringing. Begin with the printer’s PETG profile, then test retraction and temperature changes gradually. Prusa’s material guidance describes higher retraction and lower nozzle temperature as ways to moderate strings, but the useful settings remain printer- and filament-dependent. Prusa’s PETG guide provides material-specific context.

Flexible filament

Flexible filament can stretch during retraction, so importing a PLA profile may not work well. Prusa’s flexible-material guidance advises trying lower retraction or disabling it, then increasing gradually if needed. Keep the filament dry and follow the profile and guidance for the particular flexible material. Prusa’s flexible-material guide covers this different trade-off.

Which fix should I try first?

Approach Best reason to try it Trade-off or caution
Calibrate retraction length and speed Strings occur during travel and the settings are custom or untested. Excessive length or speed can impair extrusion; values depend on the printer. Prusa; UltiMaker.
Lower nozzle temperature slightly The current temperature may be higher than the filament needs. Change gradually and preserve reliable extrusion and layer bonding. Prusa.
Dry the filament The spool may have absorbed moisture. Follow the material maker’s instructions; drying is not a universal fix. Prusa.
Clean the nozzle or inspect the hotend Residue, heat dissipation, or recent hotend work is suspect. Follow service instructions for the specific hardware. Prusa.
Adjust travel or wipe options Strings are most visible along particular travel paths. These settings manage travel behavior but do not address moisture or hardware causes. Prusa.

How do I clean up a print that still has fine strings?

For a few fine strands on an otherwise sound print, brief post-print heat treatment can remove them. Prusa advises limiting heat-gun exposure to one or two seconds; longer exposure can deform the part. This is cosmetic cleanup, not a substitute for fixing the cause of recurring stringing. See Prusa’s caution on cleanup.
