1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReduce server-side request forgery (SSRF) risk on a VPN or remote-access appliance by removing unnecessary features that make outbound requests, restricting required requests to approved destinations, and enforcing the destination policy on the connection itself. Add outbound network controls, limit management access and internal reach, monitor appliance egress, and install vendor fixes. These controls work together; a web application firewall or URL deny-list alone is not a complete defense.
The exact configuration depends on the appliance and its features. This guidance is general: it does not establish that any particular VPN product has an SSRF vulnerability or accepts user-supplied URLs. Check the manufacturer’s current security advisories and documentation for your model and software release before changing settings.

What is SSRF?
SSRF is a flaw that lets an attacker cause an application or device to make a network request on the attacker’s behalf. If a request-handling feature accepts a URL or other destination input and the appliance does not enforce a safe destination policy, the appliance may be able to reach systems the person supplying the input cannot access directly. That could include destinations on the appliance’s local network or on the appliance itself.

OWASP describes SSRF as abuse of an application’s interaction with internal or external networks through mishandled URLs. HTTP may be the initial request, but SSRF policy must also account for other protocols or URL schemes the application could use.

Which appliance features should you review?
Inventory features that fetch, contact, or otherwise retrieve data from a destination configured by a user or administrator. Depending on the product, general examples can include image retrieval, callbacks, webhooks, integrations, importers, or update checks. These are patterns to investigate, not a claim that a particular VPN appliance includes them.
- Identify which features make outbound requests and what destinations they need.
- Disable features that are not required for the appliance’s documented role.
- Limit who can configure destinations or enable request-making features.
- For each required feature, document its necessary schemes, hostnames, ports, and destinations.
How do you prevent SSRF in a feature that must make requests?
Allow only necessary destinations
Prefer a positive allowlist of the schemes, hostnames, ports, and destinations required by the feature. If the destinations are known, do not accept arbitrary internet URLs. Parse input with a maintained URL-handling library and reject malformed or unexpected forms rather than trying to repair them. Restricting who can configure a destination is useful, but it does not replace validating the destination when a request is made.
Validate the address the connection will actually use
A hostname-only check is not enough. Resolve both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, compare the results with the approved destination policy, and make the HTTP client connect to one of those validated addresses. Preserve the correct hostname for the HTTP Host header, TLS SNI, and certificate validation. If validation performs one DNS lookup but the client performs a fresh lookup to connect, a DNS change between the checks can undermine the policy.

Apply the same destination policy to every path that can create a connection: redirects, retries, fallback connections, and any additional address returned during resolution. If the client cannot reliably bind a request to a validated address while preserving hostname and TLS checks, use another supported implementation or limit the feature’s outbound reach at the network layer.
Constrain schemes and redirects
Allow only the protocols the feature needs. Reject unexpected schemes rather than assuming that an HTTP-looking URL is the only possible route. Disable redirects unless the feature requires them; when redirects are enabled, validate each redirect destination before following it. A destination that was allowed for the first request does not automatically make a redirect target safe.
Block sensitive ranges as a backstop
As a second layer, prevent requests to destinations such as loopback addresses, private IPv4 ranges, IPv6 unique-local and link-local ranges, and cloud metadata destinations where relevant. Include IPv4 and IPv6 in the policy. OWASP cautions that deny-lists can be bypassed and recommends allowlists where feasible, so these blocks should supplement—not replace—a narrow positive allowlist.

How do you stop DNS rebinding?
DNS rebinding can defeat a check that approves a hostname once and then lets a client resolve it again when opening the connection. The central defense is to bind validation to the connection: resolve the name, check all returned IPv4 and IPv6 addresses against policy, and connect to a validated address while retaining the expected hostname for Host, SNI, and certificate checks.
Do not treat a successful DNS check as durable approval of a hostname. Revalidate any new destination introduced by redirects, retries, or fallback behavior, and avoid client configurations that silently perform a separate, unchecked resolution for the actual connection.
How should you limit an appliance’s network reach?
Restrict outbound traffic
Use network controls to permit outbound connections only to services and ports the appliance needs. The appropriate control may be a firewall or another supported egress control, depending on the deployment. Coordinate the policy with the vendor’s documented requirements so that required functions are not disrupted.

Reduce exposure and internal access
Expose only the VPN gateway ports needed for the deployment, disable unused features, and allow management access only from trusted devices and networks. Place remote-access and control-system devices behind firewalls where appropriate, and isolate them from business networks to limit the impact if an appliance is compromised. Review the likely device impact before applying network or access changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you validate and monitor the controls?
Test in a controlled setting
Test both allowed and denied destinations in staging or during a controlled maintenance window. Confirm that required functions still work, prohibited destinations are blocked, and redirects or other connection paths cannot bypass the policy. Exact test methods depend on the appliance, its supported configuration, and the feature being secured.

Review outbound activity
Review available outbound-connection logs and investigate unexpected destinations or changes to egress policy. The location, detail, and availability of logs vary by appliance and configuration; use the manufacturer’s documentation to identify what the device records and how to retain or forward it.

How do you keep the appliance protected over time?
Keep the appliance software current and check the manufacturer’s advisory for the precise affected versions, fixed releases, and available mitigations. Without a named product and release, there is no supportable version-specific exposure or patch claim. CISA’s general hardening guidance also supports reducing unnecessary exposure, restricting management access, disabling unused VPN features, and limiting exposed ports; its network-access guidance discusses risks in traditional VPN and remote-access deployments.
Revisit the destination allowlist and egress policy when features, integrations, or appliance software change. A setting that was necessary for one integration may no longer be needed, while a software update may alter documented connectivity requirements.
How should you compare SSRF mitigations?
When assessing a product feature, appliance control, or proposed network rule, compare the protections it provides rather than relying on a single security label.

| Check | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Destination policy | Does it allow only a defined set of destinations, or can it reach arbitrary outbound destinations? |
| Address validation | Does it cover IPv4 and IPv6 and bind validation to the address used for the actual connection? |
| Additional connection paths | Are redirects, retries, and fallback connections subject to the same checks? |
| Network limits | Can outbound routes and ports be restricted narrowly enough for the deployment? |
| Exposure and isolation | Are management access and the appliance isolated from untrusted networks and unnecessary internal systems? |
| Operational fit | Does the manufacturer support the control, and can it be deployed without disrupting documented functions? |
A web application firewall can contribute to input validation for a web application, but it is not proof that an appliance is protected from SSRF. The destination checks, connection behavior, egress limits, and vendor-supported configuration still matter.
