Apple’s menu names can vary by iOS version. The steps below use the established Screen Time labels; if a control is missing, follow the labels on your iPhone or check Apple’s Screen Time guide.

What each iPhone setting does
| Control | What it changes | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| App Limits | Sets a daily time allowance for selected apps or a category, such as Games or Social Networking. | You want to cap time in particular apps. |
| Downtime | Schedules a window when most apps are unavailable. With Block at Downtime off, you can continue after a reminder; with it on, restricted apps cannot be opened. | You want a regular screen-free period, such as dinner or bedtime. |
| Focus | Silences notifications or allows notifications from selected people and apps. It does not set a daily usage allowance. | You want fewer interruptions during work, study, meals, or rest. |
Apple describes Focus as “a feature that helps you concentrate on a task by minimizing distractions.” You can pair a Focus with a Lock Screen or Home Screen, and schedule it by time, location, or when you open a particular app. See Apple’s Focus setup instructions.
Turn on Screen Time and check your usage
- Open Settings > Screen Time.
- Tap App & Website Activity, then turn it on.
- Use Screen Time’s reports to review app and website use, pickups, and notifications before choosing what to change.
Screen Time must be enabled for its reports and core scheduling and limit controls. The precise labels can differ across iOS versions.
#1 Best Overall
- LOCK APPS AND WEBSITES INSTANTLY - Bloom is a stainless steel NFC keycard that blocks your most distracting apps (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) and websites. Just tap the card to your phone to start a focus session.
- NO LOOPHOLES - Unlike screen time apps you can ignore, Bloom is a physical barrier. Leave your card behind, and your distractions stay locked until you tap it again.
- SMART FEATURES - Includes app/website blocking, focus schedules, child mode, emergency exits, break timers, and even adult content blocking for complete peace of mind.
- AS SEEN ON SHARK TANK - Featured on national television for our innovative approach to helping people take back control of their screen time.
- DESIGNED FOR EVERY SITUATION - Perfect for students studying for exams, professionals needing deep work sessions, parents managing their children's device usage, or anyone tired of doomscrolling and losing hours to social media.
Set a daily App Limit
- Go to Settings > Screen Time > App Limits.
- Tap Add Limit.
- Select a category, individual apps, or a combination, then tap to continue.
- Set the daily allowance. If weekdays and weekends need different limits, use the option to customize days and set the allowance for each day.
- Confirm the limit.
If you select several apps or categories together, the allowance applies to that selection. For more precise control, set a limit for the specific app rather than a broader category. Start with the apps you actually want to change instead of limiting everything at once.
Schedule Downtime and choose whether to block apps
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Downtime.
- Turn on Downtime immediately until tomorrow, or enable a schedule and choose the days and start and end times.
- Decide whether to enable Block at Downtime. Turn it on when you want restricted apps blocked during the window. Leave it off if a reminder, rather than a block, is the right level of friction.
Apple says a scheduled Downtime reminder appears five minutes before the period begins. Downtime is a schedule, not a daily allowance: use App Limits as well if you also want caps outside that window.

Keep essential apps and contacts available
Open Settings > Screen Time > Always Allowed and review the apps and contacts you want available during Downtime and after limits are reached. Keep only what you need for access during restricted periods; the rest can remain subject to your limits.
Use Focus to reduce notification interruptions
- Open Settings > Focus, then choose a Focus or create one.
- Choose which people and apps are allowed to notify you, or silence notifications as needed.
- Optionally associate the Focus with a Lock Screen or Home Screen.
- Set an automatic schedule by time, location, or app if you want it to turn on without manual activation.
A Focus can reduce the urge to check notifications, but it does not prevent opening an app or replace App Limits and Downtime. For example, use an App Limit for a social app, Downtime for a nightly screen-free period, and a Focus that allows only essential contacts during work.

Choose whether settings apply across Apple devices
In Settings > Screen Time, review Share Across Devices. When sharing is on, Screen Time settings and reports apply across an iPhone, iPad, and Mac signed in to the same Apple Account. When it is off, each device has separate settings. Choose shared settings if you want limits and reports to cover your devices; keep them separate if you want different rules on each one.
Apple’s newer Screen Time guide describes Schedules and Time Allowances and identifies those newer features as requiring iOS 27 or later. Sharing those features through Family Sharing also requires corresponding current OS versions on all devices. If your iPhone’s interface does not match the steps here, use the menu labels shown on your device and consult Apple’s Screen Time guide.
