A rainbow effect under a screen protector is not automatically a sign of a damaged display. It may be an optical effect that changes with the viewing angle or disappears when the screen is on; it can also come from a protector’s coating, trapped dust, bubbles, lifting edges, or poor fit. Check when it appears and inspect the film before trying to fix it.
First, check whether the pattern changes with the display or viewing angle
- Turn the display on. Moshi says rainbow-like patterns beneath its screen protector may appear when the device is off or viewed at a slanted angle, and should disappear when the screen is turned on. In those conditions, it describes the pattern as a natural optical phenomenon rather than a defect. Moshi Help Center
- View the phone straight on, then at an angle. If the effect changes with the angle or screen state, that supports an optical explanation, but it does not conclusively identify the cause.
- Inspect the protector itself. Look for oily-looking stains, uneven appearance, trapped dust, bubbles, lifted edges, or a mismatch with the phone’s screen. Samsung lists these among possible protective-film problems for Galaxy devices, including issues associated with some unauthorized third-party protectors. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance also notes that some third-party films may affect display quality, touch response, or fingerprint recognition.
If the display itself looks abnormal with the protector removed—or the issue affects how the phone displays content rather than just the film’s appearance—consult the phone maker’s support rather than assuming the protector is the only cause.

If the protector was just installed, follow its instructions
Some installation marks may settle, but the timing and advice depend on the specific film. Samsung China says a line can appear after applying its official anti-reflective film and may disappear naturally after a few days as the film adapts to the screen. That is guidance for the product covered by its support article, not a general waiting period for every protector. Samsung China’s instructions also warn that dust can cause bubbles and advise cleaning the screen thoroughly with the supplied cloth and dust-removal sticker.

When to replace the protector—and what to look for
Consider a compatible replacement if the film is damaged, persistently uneven, poorly attached, visibly mis-sized, or still has troublesome bubbles or coating issues after following its maker’s instructions. A view-dependent rainbow effect alone does not mean replacement is necessary.
Before buying, check:
- Exact device compatibility and edge fit: Confirm the protector is made for your phone model and does not interfere with its edges or case.
- Manufacturer guidance or certification: For Galaxy devices, Samsung recommends compatible or Samsung-certified accessories; it says its Designed for Samsung logo is used for certified partner accessories after quality verification. This is a quality-mark reference, not a guarantee that any particular listing will eliminate haze.
- Installation support: Check whether the instructions explain dust removal and alignment and whether the package includes relevant installation materials.
- Feature compatibility: Check for any stated effect on touch, fingerprint recognition, display quality, or anti-reflective features.
No particular adhesive design is established by these sources as a way to prevent every rainbow effect.

Samsung Electronics Service Korea warns that removing or attaching film yourself in the foldable-device cases covered by its guidance may damage the panel.
