npm install is not inherently unsafe, but installing a dependency can run code supplied by that package and change the project’s dependency tree. Use a reviewed lockfile for repeatability, inspect install scripts, check for known advisories, and verify package integrity where supported. None of those controls alone proves that a package is benign.
What makes an npm install risky?
There is no single “safe install” switch. Risk comes from several different places: a package may be the wrong one, its install lifecycle scripts may execute code, its code may contain a known vulnerability, or its publisher account or release process may be compromised. A lockfile helps control which versions are selected, but it does not establish that those versions are trustworthy.

npm’s threat overview discusses typosquatting, dependency confusion, and malicious changes to existing packages. npm also describes mitigations it uses, but those are not a guarantee that every malicious package will be detected. Read npm’s overview of threats and mitigations.

Before adding a dependency
Confirm the package and registry
- Check the package’s exact spelling and scope against the project or maintainer documentation. A similar-looking name can be a different package.
- Confirm which registry the project is configured to use and whether the dependency is meant to be public or private.
- For private dependencies, use an organization scope and configure the intended registry. npm recommends scoped names to reduce the risk of a public package substituting for a private package name.
- Review the project identity and whether the package serves the purpose you need. These checks reduce avoidable mistakes; visual inspection alone cannot detect every attack.

- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Review the dependency and lockfile change
Check the requested package and version range in package.json, then inspect the corresponding changes in package-lock.json. Commit the lockfile so reviewers can see the resolved dependency tree and future installs can use the same resolution.
A lockfile is a repeatability control, not a trust certificate. With npm install, npm uses locked versions when they satisfy the manifest’s ranges; if they do not, it resolves versions that fit the manifest and updates the lockfile. If both package-lock.json and yarn.lock are present, npm’s documented install behavior prioritizes package-lock.json. See the npm install documentation.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Look for install-time scripts
Packages can run lifecycle scripts during installation. Review whether a dependency uses preinstall, install, postinstall, or an applicable prepare script, and ask why that execution is needed. Such scripts may be legitimate—for example, to build a native module—but they are code execution and deserve scrutiny. npm documents lifecycle behavior in its scripts documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor npm CLI versions that support it, the allowScripts policy can approve dependency scripts and strict handling can fail an install when scripts have not been reviewed. npm CLI v11 documents npm install-scripts commands for maintaining approvals. Check the documentation for the npm version your project actually uses before adopting exact policy settings or commands: support and defaults are version-sensitive. See the npm CLI v11 install-scripts reference.

Choose the right install command
| Command | When it fits | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
npm install |
Local dependency work, including adding or updating dependencies. It can update the lockfile when locked versions no longer satisfy the manifest ranges. | It does not establish that selected packages are safe or that install scripts are harmless. |
npm ci |
Clean installs, especially in CI, when the committed manifest and lockfile are expected to match. | It is not a vulnerability scan or trust check. It requires manifest and lockfile sync and fails rather than updating the lockfile to resolve a mismatch. |
Use npm ci in CI when the job should reproduce the committed dependency tree instead of changing it. Use npm install when intentionally changing dependencies, and review the resulting manifest and lockfile diff. Both commands can trigger package lifecycle behavior; choose script controls according to project needs rather than treating the install command as a security boundary. npm documents these command differences at npm install and npm scripts.
Run and interpret npm audit
npm audit asks the configured default registry for known vulnerability information based on the project’s dependency description. npm’s documented audit behavior includes direct, development, bundled, and optional dependencies; it does not include peer dependencies. It reports known advisories and possible remediation, not arbitrary malicious behavior or every security flaw. See the npm audit documentation.

Verify signatures and provenance where available
npm audit signatures can check registry signatures and provenance attestations for downloaded packages when the relevant evidence is available and supported. npm documents provenance verification for npm CLI 9.5.0 or later. A successful check provides integrity or origin evidence; it does not certify that a package’s code is safe. A missing attestation should prompt context-aware investigation, not an automatic conclusion that the package is malicious. See npm’s guide to viewing package provenance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Protect accounts that publish packages
For maintainers, account security helps reduce the risk of someone taking over a publishing account and changing package releases. npm recommends enabling two-factor authentication and identifies a security key as its strongest 2FA option. Its current documentation says publishing requires 2FA to be enabled or a granular access token with 2FA bypass enabled; check the current policy before publishing because account rules can change. This protects the publisher account, not a developer’s ordinary dependency installation. Read npm’s 2FA documentation.
