Rainbow artifacts and laser speckle are different problems, so start by identifying which one you see. Colored flashes around bright edges point to rainbow effect (RBE), usually linked to sequential color display. A fine, persistent shimmer or grain pattern points to speckle, caused by coherent laser light interfering after it reflects from a surface. An RBE setting may help the first; screen and viewing tests may affect the second, but no universal screen fix is established.
How to tell rainbow effect from laser speckle
Try observing a bright subtitle or highlight against a dark scene while moving your eyes naturally. Brief red, green, or blue flashes near high-contrast edges are a practical clue for RBE. A finer shimmering or grain-like pattern that remains visible is more consistent with speckle. This is a viewing aid, not a laboratory test, and both effects may be present.

The distinction matters because RBE comes from how colors are presented, while speckle comes from interference in reflected laser light. A fix aimed at one should not be assumed to address the other.

Reduce rainbow artifacts (RBE)
Check for a rainbow-reduction setting
- Open your projector’s settings or picture menu and look for an option named “Rainbow Reduction,” “RBE Reduction,” or similar. Menu names and availability vary by model.
- If the setting is present, enable it and replay the same bright-edge scene from the same seat. Compare what you see; do not assume the mode removes the effect entirely.
There is no model-independent menu path because the projector model is not specified. If the option is absent, independent testing guidance says owners of an existing design generally have few other practical ways to reduce RBE.

Why some projectors show RBE
RBE is associated with sequential-color projection: color components are shown at different times, and some viewers perceive brief colored flashes, particularly around bright objects on dark backgrounds. This can still apply to single-chip DLP RGB laser projectors. Having three laser sources does not by itself mean the projector displays red, green, and blue simultaneously; the imaging design determines how the colors reach the image.
Projector designs can reduce visible RBE through faster color sequencing, refinements to color wheels, overlap between color presentations, or LED or RGB illumination. The result depends on implementation. Texas Instruments says its latest DLP display controllers support “up to 20 cycles per color in a 60 Hz system.” That is a controller capability, not a guarantee that a particular projector uses it or that an individual viewer will not see RBE. TI also characterizes the effect as a brief color flash seen in some older DLP projectors and more common in early lamp or older laser-phosphor color-wheel systems; that characterization does not mean newer single-chip designs cannot show it. Texas Instruments technical application brief.
Before buying another projector
If you are sensitive to RBE, try to view the exact model before purchasing, using bright highlights against dark areas. Individual responses differ, and specifications alone cannot predict what every viewer will notice. If relying on test results, compare the specific model’s color-flash behavior with other models rather than treating all DLP or all laser projectors as equivalent. Reduce laser speckle
Speckle is a shimmering or grainy pattern produced when coherent laser light reflects from a surface and the reflected light interferes. Its perceived contrast can vary with factors including wavelength, spectral width, screen roughness, angles, pattern averaging, and viewing geometry. That makes the screen and setup reasonable factors to investigate, but the available evidence does not establish a particular consumer screen or home adjustment as a guaranteed cure.
Run a controlled screen or viewing test
- Keep the projector, image content, and viewing position constant. Use a scene where the speckle is easy to see.
- Change one factor at a time, such as screen surface or viewing geometry, and compare the same scene from the same position.
- Record whether the pattern appears less noticeable in your setup. A change that helps one projector-screen combination is not proof it will work with another.
A screen may be worth researching because surface properties are among the factors studied, but do not treat a generic screen as a speckle-reduction product without evidence for that screen material and projector combination. A 2024 study examines factors affecting laser-projection speckle contrast; it does not establish a universal household fix. 2024 study on laser projection speckle.
What about optical de-speckling devices?
Optical mitigation approaches exist in research and specialist contexts, but that does not establish that a typical home user can buy and install one or that it will outperform other options. A 2019 McMaster University technology brief describes a motionless approach compatible with single- and multi-laser sources; it does not, by itself, establish broad consumer availability or independent comparative performance. Does an RGB laser projector eliminate rainbow effect?
No. “RGB laser” describes the light sources, not necessarily simultaneous color display. A single-chip system may still present colors sequentially, so the label alone cannot establish that a model is RBE-free. For example, LG describes particular wheel-less RGB models as using its stated design approach; keep that claim tied to those models rather than extending it to every RGB laser projector. These are separate considerations, not one combined artifact score.
