Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To make a smart home more private, secure its accounts and router, limit what devices collect or share, and switch off features you do not use. These steps reduce exposure; they cannot make an internet-connected home risk-free. NIST cybersecurity researcher Julie Haney puts it plainly: “While nothing connected to the internet is completely secure, there are steps you can take to help protect yourself while still enjoying these products.”
1. Get household agreement before adding a device
A camera or microphone affects everyone who shares the space, not just the person who installs it. Talk through where it will go, when it will be active, who can access it, and whether recordings will be stored. NIST also recommends researching a maker’s recent privacy or security complaints and checking which protections and privacy controls the device offers before buying.

2. Give every account a unique password
Change default credentials on devices and the router, and avoid reusing passwords from other accounts. If a password exposed in one breach is reused elsewhere, it can put those other accounts at risk. Use a password manager if that makes unique credentials easier to maintain.
3. Enable multifactor authentication where available
Turn on two-factor or multifactor authentication for device and cloud accounts when the service offers it. A second verification step can help protect an account if its password is exposed. Availability and setup differ by product, so check the account’s security settings.

Look for controls over how long audio and video are kept and what information is sent to the manufacturer. Settings vary, so check both the device and its companion app or cloud account.

For smart TVs
Review the TV’s tracking and privacy options, and remove apps you no longer use. The FTC notes that apps may collect behavior data even when you are not actively using them. Menu names differ by brand and model; consult the TV’s current settings and support information.
6. Keep firmware and companion apps updated
Enable automatic updates if the device supports them, and check that its companion app is current. Updates can address security issues as well as add or change features. If an older device no longer receives security updates, NIST advises considering whether to retire or replace it.

7. Secure the router that connects everything
Smart-home privacy is not only an account issue: devices connect through the router, so its security matters too. Change the router’s default administrator credentials and network name, install available router updates, and use WPA3 or WPA2 encryption. The FTC identifies the router as central to connected-device privacy. Consider a new router only if older equipment cannot support WPA2 or WPA3; existing equipment may already have the needed settings.
8. Separate smart-home devices from sensitive computers when practical
If your router supports it, put smart-home devices on a guest or separate network rather than the same network as computers holding sensitive information. This can help keep access to one network from automatically exposing devices on another. Exact setup depends on the router, and network separation is a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee against compromise.

9. Limit camera access and review it

Check that the camera and service use encryption for account details and video feeds, and install updates when offered. Review access logs for unfamiliar addresses or unusual access times if the service provides logs.

10. Be deliberate about camera placement and sharing
Think carefully before placing a remotely viewable camera in a particularly private room. Turn off remote viewing if you do not need it, and share a feed only with people who need access. Use separate accounts or permissions when supported rather than sharing one login. When choosing a camera, check for encryption, update availability, remote-viewing controls, and configurable user or time-based permissions; no particular model is established as best by these criteria.
Why these habits matter
Parks Associates estimated that 45% of U.S. households with internet had at least one smart-home device in 2024, and 18% had six or more. NIST relayed those estimates in its December 2025 report, SP 1343. The figures describe U.S. households, not the security of any individual home.
The guidance here is for consumers generally, not an audit of a particular device or household. Menus, features, and support periods vary, so confirm current instructions for each product.
