You can keep your Pixel’s chosen display resolution and still try several battery-saving changes. Start by reducing brightness and screen-on time, then check Always-on Display, live wallpapers and background app use. Smooth Display is a separate refresh-rate setting—not a resolution setting—and Google says it increases battery use on supported models.
Make display changes that keep resolution unchanged
Brightness, how long the screen stays on, and what it displays when idle are useful first places to look. These adjustments do not require lowering resolution.

Reduce brightness and screen-on time
- Lower brightness manually, or enable Adaptive brightness so the phone can adjust it to your surroundings.
- Set a shorter screen timeout. Google suggests 30 seconds as an example in its Pixel battery guidance.
- Turn off Always-on Display if you do not need to see information on the screen while the phone is idle.
Consider dark theme and a static wallpaper
Dark theme and turning off a live wallpaper are additional options in Google’s battery-saving guidance. Whether a particular change makes a noticeable difference depends on how you use the phone; Google does not give a fixed battery-saving percentage for these settings.

Smooth Display changes refresh behavior, not display resolution. Google says of the setting: “This increases battery usage.” If you are willing to trade some scrolling and animation smoothness for potentially lower display power use, you can turn it off while leaving resolution as it is. Google does not specify how much charge this will save.

These are refresh-rate specifications, not resolution settings. Check the display options on your model; Google’s Pixel screen and display settings guide describes the controls. Battery Saver disables Smooth Display automatically.

Find out what is using battery
Rather than restrict apps at random, use Battery usage to see which apps or system activity account for charge use.

- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Review the app and system views for items with high use.
- For an app with unusually high background use, open its background-usage controls and review the available setting. Google generally recommends Optimized for apps.
Background controls are not available for every app or system function. Restricting an app can also delay its background work or notifications. Google’s battery drain troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

Use Battery diagnostics when available
Pixel 6 and later include Battery diagnostics, with a check called “Battery draining too quickly.” Use it if the charge loss seems unusual and you want a device-provided troubleshooting check. A brief period of high drain alone does not prove the battery has failed.

Adaptive Battery and battery optimization are intended to reduce unnecessary background activity, especially for apps you use less often. Google says the changes can take a few weeks to take full effect after setting up a phone or factory resetting it. They may also reduce performance or delay notifications. Allow for temporary drain after updates
Google Pixel Phone Help says: “After a software update, it’s normal for your Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual.” The phone may use extra power for a few days while software is downloaded and optimized. If unusual drain continues beyond that period, check Battery usage and run diagnostics where available.
Keep the phone cool and know when to seek help
Heat can increase battery drain even when the phone is idle, and Google warns that it can damage the battery. Avoid leaving a hot Pixel in hot conditions or charging it unnecessarily while it is already hot. If the problem persists and diagnostics indicate a possible hardware issue, contact Google support or an authorized repair provider. Google’s battery troubleshooting guidance includes further steps; menu labels and feature availability can vary by model and Android version, so use Settings search if a path differs on your phone.
