To reduce OBS CPU usage during a continuous YouTube playlist stream, first identify what is consuming resources, then change one thing at a time: try a compatible hardware encoder, lower output resolution or frame rate if acceptable, and simplify the sources and filters OBS has to render. The right fix depends on how the playlist enters OBS and which encoder your computer is using, so measure before and after rather than assuming a particular source or setting is the cause.
Find out whether encoding or rendering is the bottleneck
A high system CPU percentage alone does not reveal why OBS is struggling. Compare CPU use at three points: OBS idle, the playlist playing without a stream, and the stream running. In OBS, open View → Stats and watch for encoding lag, rendering lag, and dropped frames. Also note the active encoder, output resolution and frame rate, operating system, and playlist source type.

- Encoding lag points toward the encoding workload; check whether OBS is using x264 or a supported hardware encoder.
- Rendering lag points toward the work OBS does to compose scenes and sources; inspect browser sources, filters, and unnecessary scene elements.
- Dropped frames can reflect network delivery problems rather than high CPU. Check YouTube stream health and upload capacity before treating every dropped frame as an encoding issue.
OBS notes that CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (OBS system requirements). A playlist might be a Browser Source, a Media or VLC Source, or a desktop/window capture; these arrangements do not impose identical workloads.

Reduce the encoding workload
Try hardware encoding if your system supports it
In OBS, open Settings → Output and check the encoder selected for streaming. If it is x264, try a hardware encoder available on your computer—such as NVENC, AMF, QSV, or VideoToolbox—then run a test and compare the Stats window. OBS explains that modern hardware encoders move encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU hardware (OBS hardware encoding guide). Availability and support depend on the hardware and operating system; no single encoder is right for every system.

On Apple Silicon, OBS documents VideoToolbox for streaming. OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is not supported on Intel Macs because most streaming services require constant bitrate; its guidance for those systems is to use x264. Check the OBS guidance for your hardware and current version before changing encoders.
Lower resolution or frame rate only as far as needed
If a compatible hardware encoder is unavailable or does not solve the problem, reduce the streaming output resolution or frame rate and test again. Fewer frames mean less rendering and encoding work. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. Lowering the base canvas resolution can require broader scene changes, so OBS reserves it for severe resource constraints. Make sure the output remains suitable for the video and viewers you intend to serve.

Do not treat a bitrate reduction by itself as a CPU fix: bitrate chiefly affects the data sent to YouTube and the bandwidth required. Use YouTube’s published recommendations for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and confirm stream health. Its live encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; those are YouTube’s recommendations for those listed formats, not a universal CPU prescription (YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Simplify the OBS scene and playlist source
Remove work the stream does not need
- Remove unused sources and keep scenes focused. OBS notes that sources can use resources even when they are not visible.
- Use media close to the output dimensions instead of needlessly oversized files.
- Temporarily disable filters to find out whether one is contributing to the load. Apply processing to the smallest suitable source rather than the entire scene, and deactivate sources with heavy filters when they are not needed.
- Keep large, unrelated scene collections separate where that makes the project easier to manage.
These steps can reduce work without changing the main video, but the improvement depends on your project and computer. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance covers source, filter, resolution, and frame-rate changes (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).

Adjust the source that actually plays the playlist
If the playlist uses a Browser Source, remember that browser rendering can be resource intensive. Reduce its width and height to the area the stream needs, try a lower custom frame rate if the content still looks acceptable, and avoid unnecessary browser sources. OBS also documents an option to shut down a browser source when it is not visible.
For static overlays, use an Image Source where suitable; for local audio or video, OBS suggests Media or VLC sources. A YouTube page embedded in a Browser Source is not equivalent to a local media playlist: changing source type may change playback behavior, so do not switch methods without testing the playlist end to end. OBS’s browser-source documentation explains its custom frame-rate and shutdown options (OBS Browser Source guide).

Test the changes before a long broadcast
- Use Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then check the settings it chooses against your actual stream needs.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test with representative playlist motion and audio. Change one setting at a time and record CPU use plus OBS encoding and rendering lag.
- Check YouTube’s stream health during the test. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test and monitoring stream health; the upload rate must be reliable for the selected stream settings (YouTube live encoder settings).
- Observe a longer test before relying on a continuous broadcast. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes; extending the observation period for a long-running stream is prudent operational practice, not a stated OBS requirement.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed 4 seconds. Supported formats depend on the ingest protocol and encoder. YouTube also transcodes live streams for different viewer formats. These delivery settings help with compatibility; they do not, by themselves, guarantee lower CPU use.

| Symptom | What to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| High CPU and encoding lag | Encoder in Settings → Output; output resolution and frame rate | Try a supported hardware encoder, or reduce resolution/frame rate and test. |
| Rendering lag, especially when the playlist appears | Browser Source dimensions and frame rate; source count; filters | Reduce browser workload, remove unnecessary sources, and isolate filters one at a time. |
| Dropped frames but little encoding or rendering lag | YouTube stream health and upload stability | Test upload capacity and verify YouTube’s recommended delivery settings for the chosen format. |
| The playlist changes or stops after switching source types | Whether the original source was a YouTube page, local media, or desktop capture | Restore the source arrangement that preserves the required playback behavior; test any replacement before going live. |
Do not buy a graphics card just because CPU use is high. First check whether your existing GPU or integrated graphics offers a compatible encoder and verify that encoding—not rendering or network delivery—is the bottleneck. OBS documents hardware encoding as a way to shift encode work away from the CPU, but compatibility and results vary by system.
