Start by eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed, then protect people from bites with screens, clothing, and an EPA-registered skin repellent when needed. These steps address different parts of the problem: water cleanup helps prevent future mosquitoes, while personal protection helps reduce bites from adults already nearby.
How do I reduce mosquitoes in my backyard without Thermacell?
Use a weekly routine that starts with breeding sites and adds bite protection. No single yard trick is guaranteed to eliminate mosquitoes: eggs and larvae can be difficult to control completely when breeding spots are varied and scattered.

1. Do a weekly water check
At least once a week, and after rain, look for anything that holds water. Empty and scrub it, turn it over, cover it, or discard it. Scrubbing matters because eggs may remain attached to container surfaces after water is poured out.

- Empty and clean plant trays and saucers; change water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, and rain barrels at least weekly.
- Clear gutters and downspouts, and check rain barrels and pool covers for collected water.
- Keep permanent swimming pools treated and circulating. Drain temporary pools or fill them with dirt.

2. Use larvicide only for water you cannot remove
If water cannot be dumped, covered, or removed, a mosquito larvicide may be appropriate only when the product label permits that use and the water is not used for drinking. CDC says homeowners can use mosquito dunks or bits containing larvicide. Examples of possible breeding places include rain barrels, fountains, gutters, non-chlorinated pools, water on pool covers, tires, and tree holes—but the presence of water in one of these places does not automatically mean it should be treated. Remove or cover it if possible; otherwise, check the label and follow its exact application and reapplication directions.
Some products use Bti, a bacterial larvicide that targets mosquito larvae. Larvicides act before mosquitoes mature; they do not repel adult mosquitoes or protect exposed skin from bites. See the CDC’s larvicide guidance for the distinction and label cautions.

How can I protect people from mosquitoes already nearby?
Habitat cleanup is not immediate personal protection. For time outdoors, cover exposed skin with long sleeves and pants where practical, and use an EPA-registered skin-applied repellent as directed. An EPA registration number indicates that EPA evaluated a repellent for safety and effectiveness when used according to its label. Reapply as the label directs; performance can vary with perspiration, water exposure, temperature, activity, and individual differences. EPA explains how to use repellents safely and effectively.

To reduce mosquitoes indoors, repair or maintain screens on doors and windows. A skin repellent is different from a spatial repellent, which disperses repellent into an outdoor area. For spatial products, follow the label’s directions about coverage, wind, and any time needed for the product to build up; use them indoors only if the label specifically allows it. EPA says it does not know whether sound-wave devices are effective against mosquitoes. Its overview of insect repellent types explains these distinctions.

When are outdoor mosquito sprays appropriate?
Outdoor adulticides target adult mosquitoes in places where they rest, such as dark, humid areas under patio furniture or in carports and garages. They are not a substitute for removing breeding water or protecting people from bites. EPA places adult mosquito control within an integrated approach, particularly when source reduction and larval control have failed or are not feasible.
